Diamonds are a girl's best friend—but are they your skin's? I tried 111Skin's coveted Celestial Black Diamond face mask to find out.

Much like gold-flaked foodstuffs, the inclusion of diamond particles in beauty products sounds like a gimmick—and an excuse to hike up the price of an otherwise basic formula by way of fancy marketing. Do a little digging, however, and you'll find that the glamorous ingredient actually has been shown to offer real benefits. Per various studies, diamond nanoparticles can help deliver ingredients deeper into the skin (therefore increasing their effectiveness), and, thanks to gem's reflective nature, can even aid in protecting skin from UV rays.

With that in mind, the hype surrounding 111Skin's signature sheet mask doesn't seem so farfetched. The hydrogel masks are meant to lift, firm and plump your complexion, and are infused with diamond particles "to help powerful peptides travel deep into the skin," according to the brand. Alas, these masks are pricey ($28 each), but since they're currently on rare deal in a pack of five at the Dermstore Anniversary Sale—bringing the set down from $140 to $105 with code CHEERS—I figured there was no better time to pick up a pack and try them for myself. And, honestly, I'm so glad I did.

The mask comes in two pieces—an eye part and a jaw/cheek part—which are conveniently packaged separately, allowing not only for easy opening, but also individual treatments on each area if you're so inclined. In fact, each piece features a slightly different formulation to target concerns specific to that area: the top portion has "goji glycopeptides to help reduce the appearance of fine lines," while the lower mask "is enhanced with purified centella asiatica, a plant extract rich in antioxidants."

Still maintaining a healthy degree of skepticism, I gingerly unwrapped and placed each piece onto my face following a shower. And following a long day, I might add, which had left me and my skin feeling droopy and depleted. True to the "celestial" in its name, the black mask glitters like a night sky in Sedona. But I wasn't here to stargaze—I was looking for results.

After leaving the two pieces on my face for 20 minutes (and snapping a few selfies with just the eye portion on à la Batman), I removed the mask to reveal instantly brighter, bouncier skin. No really, I poked and prodded the area around my cheeks and nasolabial folds (where I've been most insecure about volume loss since entering my 30s) and it felt fuller and firmer. Plus, my overall tired and dull complexion was glowing. It was at this point that I kicked myself for using the mask before bed; this skin deserved to be seen by more than just my pillow.

TL;DR? This fancy-schmancy sheet mask is the real deal, and something I will definitely be splurging on in the future—albeit to use before heading out for an event where my diamond-like complexion can be fully appreciated. Plus, if it can do all that after just one 20-minute treatment, I have high expectations for what it can achieve with regular use.

If you, too, had been putting off the purchase, I suggest running to Dermstore before the sale ends on Aug. 14 to stock up while you can save $35 on a five-pack.
