Paula Boudes for PureWow

In my opinion, the best season of the year is upon us, and I’m ready to smell like I’m sipping hot apple cider by the fireplace on a crisp autumn day. Whether I actually have a fireplace is beside the point. Lucky for me, this season’s newest fragrances get it. There are warm, woody scents like Initio Parfums Privés Oud for Grace, which pairs oud and sandalwood with praline and vanilla, and Burberry Goddess Amber Vanilla, a mix of maple syrup, roasted vanilla and amber that practically begs to be worn with tall boots. But autumn fragrance doesn’t have to mean smelling woody. Aesop’s new Unforeseen Aer is crisp, green and mineral, with eucalyptus, geranium, lavandin and nutmeg that remind me of being outside on one of those windy October days.

From smoky ouds and spicy woods to creamy gourmands, fresh aromatics and, yes, plenty of vanilla, I went through hours of research (and a lot of sniffing) to find the best fall fragrances worth adding to your rotation by September, all vetted and reviewed by PureWow editors. Consider this your official permission to retire your light summer scent until next year.

Best Overall

1. Diptyque Eau Duelle

Diptyque

If you’re into vanilla perfumes for fall, look no further than this one from Diptyque. It has rich, spicy notes of Juniper berry, green cardamon, black ceylon tea, and of course, vanilla bourbon. Diptyque fan and SEO Editor Marissa Wu had only great things to say about the perfume, sharing, “It smells like straight vanilla extract (with a little bourbon), and this makes me think of fall and all the cozy vibes. It transports me to being in the kitchen, baking and I'm wearing a sweater. Overall, it smells familiar, warm and super festive!”

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: pink peppercorn, juniper berry, green cardamom, elemi, frankincense, calamus, black ceylon tea, bourbon vanilla, fernat vanilla, Haitian vetiver, cypriol
  • Fragrance Family: spicy
  • Sizes: 1.7 to 3.4 oz

Most Anticipated Fall Fragrance

2. Guerlain L’Heure Bleue Eau de Parfum

Guerlain

If you usually think of iris perfumes as a little too powdery or old school, hear me out. Guerlain created a special iris tincture just for L’Heure Bleue, developed under the direction of perfumer Delphine Jelk, that captures the entire flower and gives it a fresher, greener and slightly woody feel. Fun fact: Iris is nicknamed the “blue gold” of perfumery because it’s notoriously precious. The result is still soft and romantic, but there’s something moodier and more interesting happening underneath, which is exactly what I want in a fall fragrance.

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: ozonic accord, pear, neroli, jasmine
  • Fragrance Family: amber floral
  • Sizes: 1.01 oz to 3.38 oz

Best Pumpkin Fall Fragrance

3. Bath & Body Works White Pumpkin & Chai Fine Fragrance Mist

Bath & Body Works

If fall were a Bath & Body Works fragrance, this would be it. It smells like you're walking into your favorite coffee shop on the first genuinely chilly day of the season. It combines cinnamon cider and spiced pumpkin with a sweet vanilla glaze, so yes, it’s very cozy. And at under $20, it’s a gentle reminder that you don't have to spend a ton to smell delicious. I’d keep this one by the door for a quick spritz whenever I’m in the mood to fully commit to my love for pumpkin-spice.

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: cinnamon cider, spiced pumpkin, vanilla glaze
  • Fragrance Family: spiced pumpkin
  • Sizes: 8 oz

Most Lightweight Fall Fragrance

4. Dries Van Noten Velvet Violet Eau de Parfum

dries van noten

Florals for fall? Absolutely, especially when they smell nothing like the sweet, powdery violet you might be imagining. Dries Van Noten’s Velvet Violet takes the flower in a darker, cozier direction, pairing fresh violet leaf with toasted sesame and roasted barley for an unexpectedly nutty warmth. Pink pepper gives the opening a little kick, while tonka bean, benzoin and vetiver settle into something warm and subtly addictive on the skin. The result is a woody floral gourmand that feels practically made for sweater weather.

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: pink pepper, violet leaf, toasted sesame absolute, tonka beans
  • Fragrance Family: woody, sesame
  • Sizes: 100 ml

A fragrance called Vendetta? Say less. Vendetta Donna is for anyone who wants their fall perfume to come with a tiny bit of drama. It pairs lush tuberose with juicy red orange nectar, then settles into creamy sandalwood for a warm, woody finish. I wear this when I want to smell expensive, mysterious and perhaps mildly unavailable. Revenge is optional.

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: orange nectar, white flower, sandalwood
  • Fragrance Family: floral
  • Sizes: 1.69 oz to 3.4 oz

Best Warm Fall Fragrance

6. Fenty Eau de Parfum

Fenty

This eau de parfum has been a staple of mine for years now, especially when September rolls around. It belongs in the warm florals family, with notes of magnolia, musk and Bulgarian rose. I just love the mix of sweet and spicy—and dare I say it just makes me feel cozy and a bit sexy? I often try to channel my inner RiRi as the brand’s goal is for the scent to attract all the attention and be a statement fragrance in your rotation. Did I mention it comes in a hair perfume, too?

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: magnolia, musk, Bulgarian rose
  • Fragrance Family: warm, florals
  • Sizes: 0.33 to 2.5 oz

Best Orange Blossom Fragrance

7. L’Objet Alento Eau de Parfum

l'object

Alento is the fragrance equivalent of taking a deep breath and immediately feeling your shoulders drop. Created by perfumer Cécile Zarokian, it opens with bright orange before settling into orange blossom, creamy vanilla, ambergris and soft white musks. I like it because it’s warm and slightly sweet, but not in a sugary way. I especially love it for fall because it has that soft, enveloping quality that’s almost like wrapping yourself in a cashmere sweater.

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: orange blossom, vanilla, ambergris, white musk
  • Fragrance Family: floral gourmand
  • Sizes: 3.4 oz

Best Vanilla Fall Fragrance

8. Phlur Vanilla Skin Body & Hair Fragrance Mist

Phlur

Phlur has plenty of favorite fragrances, but ‘Vanilla Skin’ is a top choice for the season. Our former Assistant Editor Delia Curtis ranked this second as it offers a sweet and woody scent with notes of sugar crystals, cashmere wood and vanilla. They write, “It’s a well-rounded sweet and woody scent with a deep richness that can only be achieved by the perfect concoction of fragrance notes. I loved testing this particular scent out because it thrived on its own and made for a great layering fragrance.”

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: sugar crystals, cashmere wood, vanilla
  • Fragrance Family: warm, spicy
  • Sizes: 3 to 8 oz

Best Unisex Fall Fragrance

9. Aesop Unforeseen Aer Eau de Parfum

aesop

If you love smelling fresh without smelling like you just stepped out of the shower, Aesop’s new Unforeseen Aer is worth a sniff. It’s the brand’s unconventional take on a classic fougère, starting off cool, crisp and almost mineral before warming up on the skin. Geranium, lavandin and rosemary create what Aesop calls a “pure air” accord, while nutmeg adds just enough spice to keep things interesting. There’s also petitgrain, eucalyptus and patchouli in the mix, so the overall effect is green, earthy and a little windswept, just like being outside on a particularly brisk autumn day.

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: eucalyptus, geranium, lavandin, lime, petitgrain, nutmeg, patchouli, cypress
  • Fragrance Family: earthy spice
  • Sizes: 1.6 to 3.4 oz

Best Amber Fall Fragrance

10. Burberry Goddess Amber Vanilla Eau de Parfum Intense

burberry

The newest take on the Goddess fragrance is warm, sweet and unapologetically gourmand, pairing luminous lavender with a maple syrup accord before settling into roasted vanilla and rich amber. The maple could have easily veered into pancake territory, but instead it gives the vanilla this deep, syrupy warmth that feels sophisticated rather than overly sugary. I think of it as the fragrance equivalent of pulling your favorite cashmere sweater out of storage.

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: maple syrup, vanilla extracts, ambery accord
  • Fragrance Family: Warm and sweet gourmand
  • Sizes: 1.0 to 1.6 oz

Best Woody Fall Fragrance

11. Initio Parfums Privés Oud For Grace Eau de Parfum

initio parfums

Oud practically begs to be worn in cooler weather, and Oud for Grace is a particularly good reason to break it out this fall. It starts with bright bergamot and a hit of black pepper before getting warmer and richer with praline, vanilla and, of course, lots of oud. Sandalwood, cedarwood and guaiacwood round things out, but what I like most is the contrast: It’s warm and slightly sweet without losing a smoky, sophisticated edge.

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: bergamot, black pepper, praline, vanilla, sandalwood, cedarwood, guaiacwood, oud
  • Fragrance Family: Woody oud
  • Sizes: 3.04 oz

Most Wearable Fall Fragrance

12. Chloe Atelier des Fleurs Cedrus de Nuit Eau de Parfum

chloe

I’m not saying a perfume can make your life more interesting, but Chloé Atelier des Fleurs Cedrus de Nuit is certainly willing to try. Inspired by nights on Paris’s Rive Gauche, it mixes cinnamon, clove and black pepper with the rare Queen of the Night flower, then dries down to dark vanilla, benzoin and cedarwood. The result is warm, woody, spicy and mysterious enough to make people wonder where you’re going after dinner. (Home. I’m going home.) But they don’t need to know that.

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: cinnamon, clove bud oil, black pepper oil, rosyfolia, mahonial, vanilla absolute, benzoin resinoid, cedar
  • Fragrance Family: woody
  • Sizes: 1.6 oz.

Best Musky Fall Fragrance

13. Penhaligon The Manoeuvres of the Baroness Eau de Parfum

penhaligon

The Manoeuvres of the Baroness sounds like the title of a period drama I would absolutely watch, but it’s actually a creamy new fragrance. Chantilly cream is the star (yes, whipped cream has officially entered its luxury-perfume era), paired with orange blossom before settling into warm sandalwood, geranium and vanilla.

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: chantilly, orange blossom, sandalwood
  • Fragrance Family: floral gourmand
  • Sizes: 2.5 oz.

Best Floral Fall Fragrance

14. Ellis Brooklyn Apple Love Eau de Parfum

Ellis Brooklyn

In 2023, we predicted this Ellis Brooklyn pick was going to be *the* fragrance of fall, and three years later, it continues to be a scent shoppers love every season. Our former Assistant Editor Delia Curtis previously shared, “It’s fruity, floral and sweet without being over the top. We've been wearing the scent nearly every day and it reminds us of a fall stroll through Manhattan. At its base, the notes of vanilla and praline evoke a moment in Little Italy with its bustling pastry shops, and the top notes of apple, mandarin and peach take us right to Chinatown with its produce sellers and boba tea shops with lines out the door for their sweet and fruity beverages.”

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: red apple, sugar cane, vanilla madagascar
  • Fragrance Family: fruity, florals
  • Sizes: 0.34 to 1.7 oz

Statement-Worthy Fall Fragrance

15. Kilian Paris Angels' Share Eau de Parfum

Kilian Paris

I went on the hunt to find Beyoncé’s favorite fragrance, and I was not disappointed. This warm fragrance will surely make a statement. It has notes of oak absolute, cognac essence, tonka bean absolute and cinnamon essence. I only need one spritz to be noticed from a mile away. Many shoppers have labelled it a ‘spicy apple pie’ or a ‘boozy fall drink,’ and they really hit it on the nose (pun intended). Plus, the bottle literally looks like an actual drink, making it a perfume that will stand out amongst your collection.

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: cognac, tonka bean, oak wood
  • Fragrance Family: warm, spicy
  • Sizes: 0.24 to 3.4 oz

Best Clean Fall Fragrance

16. Merit Retrospect L’Extrait de Parfum

Merit

It’s no secret that PureWow editors love Merit, and their latest fragrance is proof. It opens with bergamot and pear before moving into a more floral blend of jasmine, rose and violet. Then it settles nicely into a vanilla, moss and musk combo. As Editorial Assistant Courtney Mason shared in her review, “I’ve tried to find the right words to describe the true uniqueness of this fragrance for days now and still have come up short. Its elusiveness is almost reminiscent of the white mystery-flavored Airhead candy I ate as a kid, which I still, to this day, do not know the actual flavor of. Is this perfume a floral? Is it a musk? That’s for your nose to decide.”

Fast Facts

  • Scent Notes: bergamot, jasmine, musk
  • Fragrance Family: warm, spicy
  • Sizes: 0.32 to 1 oz
