Paula Boudes for PureWow

I’m no amateur when it comes to planning vacations. Travel tickets and home rentals are booked months in advance. Itineraries are filled with well-researched excursions and must-try restaurants. Packing, however, is a different story. Even my fragrance choices for a week-long getaway get plenty of thought. Yes, it is that serious. There’s a reason: scent, emotion and memory are deeply linked.  One whiff of a certain aroma and you’re briefly reminded of an emotional moment you forgot. Maybe it was a romantic dinner date under an idyllic beach sunset. Or your first time sightseeing in a bustling European city. Who wouldn’t want to be transported back to a time when they weren’t constantly checking their inbox with just one spritz?

Packing a good vacay scent is just as important as picking the destination, which is why I’ve rounded up a list of vacation fragrances, each worthy of their own plane ticket with help from PureWow staffers. From crisp spicy woods to fresh coconut-y aquatics, we share 10 of the best vacation perfumes that deserve space in your checked baggage. (Or a carry-on because we love a travel-friendly option, too.)

And the Hottest Summer Scent Is...

  • Where We Wore It: Vacationing in Rincón, PR

When I think of a scent that reminds me of paradise, it isn’t coconut or a type of citrus—it’s salt. Meant to mimic the scent of sun-kissed salty skin, Ellis Brooklyn’s Salt is associate social strategist Rachel Schleider’s go-to, which she takes on every vacation with her. “[It’s] the best clean and beachy fragrance,” she raves.

  • Where We Wore It: Weekend away in Big Sur, CA

New to the West Coast, senior commerce editor Stephanie Maida took this spicy-but-cool fragrance on a trip to the California coast. “I got my hands on this fragrance just in time for my own weekend getaway to Big Sur, and I already feel transported. Its scent is fresh and crisp—like a gust of wind blending the spray of salty waves with the earthiness of a redwood forest. The eucalyptus, in particular, comes through with a reinvigorating boldness.” Not only that but the fragrance has an intense staying power, lasting on Maida from morning 'til night.

I’m not the biggest fan of coconut scents, but if there’s one I’m taking on a beachy trip, it’s this solar perfume from LORE. It’s essentially wearable sea water, with a warm creaminess thanks to the coconut nectar, but its overall profile is fresh and aquatic. I hate to say it, but it truly is a sublime coconut fragrance.

Fashion and beauty director Deena Cambell also understands the importance of a trusty vacation perfume. Although she tends to pack a different fragrance for every vacay as a way to bookmark her trips, “Mango skin keeps sneaking back into my suitcase,” she explains. I can’t recommend mango scents enough for warm weather, but this particular fragrance, Campbell assures, could work for chillier climates as well. “The mango and blackberry notes immediately feel tropical, while black pepper and the warm vanilla and patchouli in the dry down make it cozy enough for colder destinations, too.”

  • Top Notes: blackberries, mango, black pepper
  • Middle Notes: wild orris, black lotus, jasmin
  • Base Notes: patchouli, vanilla, pink sugar
  • Travel-Sized Option: yes
  • Where We Wore It: Chasing waves in Jones Beach, NY and visiting family in Clearwater Beach, FL

I want to have bronzy, sand-speckled skin all year round—not just on vacations. Until my next voyage, Phlur’s beach-in-a-bottle sounds like a great substitute. VP of editorial Candace Davison has been living in it this summer. “I love solar scents this time of year—there's something about the blend of light citrusy-meets-musky notes that really does create a sense of warmth. It's mellow and reminds me of feeling the sun on my skin and a salty breeze in my hair.”

Fast Facts

  • Top Notes: bergamot, salted tiare flower, pink pepper
  • Middle Notes: coconut milk, lily of the valley
  • Base Notes: sandalwood, vanilla, musk
  • Travel-Sized Option: yes
  • Where We Wore It: A bachelorette in Miami and spring break at Disney's Aulani in Hawaii

“It's a bit on the nose, but you can't get more bon voyage than the classic Vacation by Vacation,” says executive managing editor Catrina Yohay. This eau de toilette isn’t in my collection (yet), but I know the timeless Vacation sunscreen aroma—and buzzy whipped formula—well. “Unmistakably bold and beachy, it's a special occasion perfume that's meant to transcend you to a vintage island paradise—where the SPF is strong and The Beach Boys rule the radio.” Mirrored after everyone’s favorite beach bag mainstay, trust us, this fragrance backs up the hype.

  • Where We Wore It: Chilling poolside in Orlando, FL

I recently wore this fragrance on a sunny—and sweltering—trip to Orlando. While I had other scents packed for the week, I couldn’t stop spraying on this one. From our Airbnb’s pool to Disney Springs, I smelled like creamy passion fruit gelato the entire time. The sweetness isn’t overwhelming, with the fragrance leaning more towards fresh fruit than artificial candy.

  • Where We Wore It: On hikes, boat rides and to roam around the city in São Miguel, Portugal

If you’ve ever wanted to try the it-girl-approved woodsy musk of Santal 33 without the $180+ price tag, Woody Sandalwood is a close contender, according to associate social content creator Brianna Diaz. “It smells so clean, fresh and airy—[it] reminds me of a hotel lobby on vacation.” No moment comes close to the relief of finally reaching your hotel after a long travel day, and I’d wager a sniff of this fragrance could bring you back to that feeling and more.

SEO editor Marissa Wu cherishes Avec Amour’s perfectly travel-sized packaging: “It's a rollerball—very compact and easy to travel with!” With notes of ylang-ylang, coconut water and sandalwood, I’d imagine this perfume oil feels like cruising around the French Riviera (paired with a trendy bandana bag and protective eyewear, of course). For application, the brand cheekily advises “to place wherever you want to be kissed.” It’s a bae-cation fragrance, no doubt.

  • Middle Notes: ylang yalang
  • Base Notes: amber, sandalwood, coconut water, vetiver
  • Travel-Sized Option: yes
  • Where We Wore It: One-day stay in the Hamptons

On my first international trip to Aruba, my friend and I boarded a yacht to watch the sunset on the water. This fragrance wasn’t around at the time, but if there’s a scent that could replicate that relaxed feeling of sailing over the Southern Caribbean sea, it’s this one. Tangy, fresh and a little fruity, Mineral Milk is a boat trip, bottled. The warm ocean breeze whipping across your face. The salty aroma rising from the sea. The tiny splashes of water on your skin from a little turbulence. This transportive fragrance should be on every wannabe sea nymph’s packing list.

Fast Facts

  • Top Notes: golden nectar, passionfruit
  • Middle Notes: coastal lavender, ocean air, marine salt
  • Base Notes: amber milk, virginia cedar, Australian sandalwood
  • Travel-Sized Option: yes
