I Just Tried a Hair Gloss Treatment, and It’s Giving Glass Hair IRL

After snipping off the last remnants of my red hair, my locks have looked…dull. I have naturally dark brown hair, but on most days, it just looks like one solid black hue. I was itching for more shine and dimension—something akin to glass hair. So I decided to try out a hair gloss treatment. According to Google, gloss treatments have been trending at all-time high as folks are searching for “what is a hair gloss treatment,” and “glossy hair.”

I recently popped into my local Ulta Beauty (yes, they have a full-fledged salon) and put my trust into the hairstylist to walk me through the whole process. Let’s just say my hair is thanking me right now. Plus, I chatted with three hairstylists to learn more about the buzzy treatment and how to do it right at home, too.

Meet the Experts

  • Philip Foresto is a professional hairstylist, salon owner of Salon Icon and brand ambassador for Redken Pro. He specializes in hair coloring (like ‘expensive hair’ technique), cutting and styling. He also spends time educating aspiring stylists through his classes.
  • Emily Cable is a stylist at Nine Zero One salon in Los Angeles. She specializes in extensions, bleaching, coloring and hair transformations. Her previous clients include Amy Boland Hauser and Tate McRae.
  • Jonathan Colombini is a celebrity hairstylist and global color expert for Schwarzkopf. He’s also a stylist at Sally Hershberger in Los Angeles. His previous clients include Kristen Chenoweth, Shannen Doherty and Geena Davis.

First, What Is a Hair Gloss Treatment?

“A hair gloss treatment is a demi-permanent color application that enhances color, corrects tones or simply glosses the hair for a shiny, expensive look,” explains Foresto. It can also neutralize unwanted brassiness and cover up grays without the full commitment of a dye job.

What Are the Benefits of a Hair Gloss Treatment?

Although I went with a blowout, my stylist (and the experts) noted that all hair types and textures can benefit from a hair gloss treatment. “Hair glosses are designed specifically to coat the strands and result in healthy shiny hair that has zero damage,” adds Foresto. A few other benefits include:

  • Its temporary. According to Foresto, a hair gloss treatment can last up to 28 washes before fading gradually.
  • Its a quick solution. The process doesn’t take too long, so expect 15 to 20 minutes of your time to start seeing some shine peeking through.
  • It can enhance your natural/existing hair color. As mentioned before, a hair gloss treatment will enhance its vibrancy and shine of your strands.

The Hair Gloss Process: What to Expect at a Salon

Once I had a consultation with my stylist, she led me over to wash my hair. She told me it was important to use a hydrating shampoo to make it easier for the gloss to penetrate deeper and lock in moisture. After rinsing my hair, she added the Redken Shades EQ hair gloss from root to tip (making sure to add enough on the tips as they are often neglected in washing or coloring in general). Then, I sat in the chair for 15 minutes before it was rinsed out. The process felt gentler than other hair dying experiences I’ve had, and it didn’t have that strong chemical scent.

My stylist followed with a deep conditioner mask (Cécred Moisturizing Deep Conditioner to be exact), which made my hair softer, shiner and more manageable. I spent another 20 minutes under the dryer before rinsing and heading to the salon chair. A quick glance in the mirror and I already noticed a difference in my strands. It truly enhanced my natural hair and I couldn’t even imagine how it would look once my hair was blown out.

She styled my hair with hair oil and a sealing lotion before drying and stretching out my hair with a Dyson Supersonic. Then, she went through each section with a flat iron to bring out the shine. She also used the tool to curl and brush out my hair for a voluminous look. I saw my glossy strands come through with each past of the flat iron. I also noticed my roots and ends were brighter than ever.

How Much Is a Hair Gloss Treatment?

The service is usually an add-on to a wash and blowout, so it can usually run from $50 to $100. If you go the at-home route, some bottles range from $20+.

How Maintain a Hair Gloss Treatment Afterwards

According to Foresto, it’s important to not over-wash your hair. It’s recommended to shampoo once a week (or even skip a wash day) to prolong the gloss. When you are ready for wash day, the expert suggests products that support these specific treatments like the Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Duo

Can You Do a Hair Gloss Treatment At Home?

If your hair is looking a bit blah lately and you can’t head into a salon, you might want to consider an at-home hair gloss. But there are a few things you should know about the treatment before clicking add to cart. “You can think of it as a temporary color balancer,” says Colombini. “A clear gloss will just add shine, whereas a tinted gloss can also help neutralize brassiness or add warmth, depending on your needs.”

But both Colombini and Cable agree that at-home versions don’t typically last as long as salon treatments. “When a hairstylist mixes a toner for a client, it could require multiple shades to make the perfect tone for them,” explains Cable. “Each client’s toner is customized to them specifically, which is why most at-home versions aren’t exactly comparable,” she adds. However, they both note that it can still be a great substitute for when you can’t get to your stylist.

How Often Can You Get a Hair Gloss Treatment?

My stylist recommended that I go every three months to get a hair gloss treatment. Though Foresto says you can just wait until your current gloss completely fades out. He adds, “Overlapping glosses can result in darkening the client's color which may lead to unwanted tones.”

It’s been a couple of days now and I can still see the shine—even walking through the streets of hot NYC. I still very much miss my red hair but a hair gloss treatment has satisfied my craving for now. Hello, glass hair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hair Gloss vs. Hair Glaze: What’s the Difference?

A glaze is slightly different from a gloss in that it doesn’t contain any peroxide or ammonia, which makes it a gentler (though not as long lasting) option. Think one week vs. four weeks. “A glaze is used more as a conditioner or a conditioning treatment,” says Colombini. It can temporarily smooth down the cuticle, so your hair is less prone to tangling, frizz and flyaways.

Are Gloss Treatments Good for Your Hair?

The experts we’ve interviewed and my stylist all attest to its benefits. A hair gloss treatment can do wonders in improving shine, definition and manageability. Since it’s a gentler option than other treatments, I don’t have to worry about it stripping my natural oils or completely transforming my strands.

How Long Does a Hair Gloss Treatment Last?

It can last four to six weeks depending on how often you shampoo your hair.

Any Tips for Using An At-Home Gloss?

“I always shampoo the hair first and apply it to towel dried hair,” says Cable. You want to cleanse your hair thoroughly and “make sure to squeeze out any excess water before applying the gloss all over,” adds Colombini.

Though a home gloss is pretty low stakes as far as these things go, it’s still chemically altering your hair, so you want to follow any instructions on the packaging to a T (lest you end up with unintended or underwhelming results). As for the application itself, you want to coat every last strand of hair completely and evenly. That means applying the gloss in sections, from root to tip, and having a backup bottle ready if you have particularly long or thick hair.

Keeping an eye on the clock and fully applying the treatment are especially important. For example, if the instructions say to keep the gloss in for 20 minutes, then make sure to wash it out at 20 minutes, rather than 19 or 21 minutes. Once you’ve glossed, Cable recommends “staying out of the sun and using a leave-in conditioning spray to help moisturize, protect and seal the cuticle” to extend your shiny results.
