Every so often, a fragrance trend will pop up that I struggle to wrap my head around. Some are fleeting and only last for a season, so I don’t have to ponder on them too much. But then there are trends that last for years making them hard to ignore.

Last year, scents inspired by syrupy pancakes and herbaceous tomatoes briefly took over spring. Then summer hit, and there was one trend folks found hard to shake, whether they liked it or not: bananas. According to our social feeds, banana scents continue to dominate, from layerable perfume mists and EDPs to even skincare products. And, in the words of Ms. Gwen Stefani, this shit is, well, you get it.

As with most trends these days, the fervor started on TikTok, with folks showing off their go-to new perfumes like Le Monde Gourmand's Banana Délice and Bath & Body Works Banana Blend. Creator Samantha Kelly shared her haul of banana-esque products, from Ellis Brooklyn Banana Milkshake to Sand + Fog Banana Cream Perfume Oil Dropper, and while her followers debated on whether or not this was a good idea, it was undeniable that she was onto something.

Publications like WhoWhatWear and NYMag have reported on the rising trend, coining it the “coolest” scent of the season. Apparently, it’s a “Banana Girl Summer.” Even luxe brands like Prada Beauty and internet fave Glossier have gotten on board. Skincare brand Glow Recipe recently launched a banana milk moisture kit, which Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay has been loving this season: “The scent leans more Laffy Taffy than Chiquita, but I can't get enough—summery, girly, unfussy and just plain fun.”

According to fragrance expert and content creator Paul Fino, this surge in popularity makes sense. “We’re in an era of hyper-realistic gourmands, where the goal isn’t just to smell edible, but to feel transported. Banana taps into that perfectly. It’s playful, nostalgic and super fun.”

As a fragrance writer, I know banana scents aren't for everyone, so we asked the fragrance experts for tips on how to make it more palatable. They advise layering the scent with another tropical note (like coconut or vanilla) to balance it out or to add a woody or musky note to ground the sweetness.

This list features a wide range of banana aromas, ranging from tropical sunscreen to spicy banana bread—all worth wearing during the summer season. So, should you decide you do want to take the plunge, here are 14 banana perfumes you might find appealing.

Arguably the freshest pick on this list, Granado's Yes, Nos Temos Banana smells like ripe green bananas waiting to be picked from the tree. There's a hint of sweetness, but it's balanced by the fresh notes of fig, peach blossom and banana leaf. Similar to the Vacation perfume, it's great if you want to smell like tropical getaways.

Fino is a fan of this fragrance, which he describes as “pure vacation energy.” With hints of banana, rum wood, and vanilla, it delivers a tropical scent without becoming overpowering. This perfume is a prime example of taking a classic banana flavor and turning it into a fine fragrance. It opens with a ripe banana aroma before settling into notes of ylang, jasmine, vanilla and patchouli. As the brand describes it, “It smells like a bowl of shapely, fruit-flavored candies, all grown up.”

If you bottled a banana Laffy Taffy, it would smell like this perfume. I expected to hate this fragrance, but the coconut note softens it to be warm and tropical rather than aggressively saccharine. There's still a hint of a candied sweetness, but it doesn't come across artificial. Devout banana haters, don't count this one out, it may surprise you.

Fast Facts

  • Top Notes: banana milk
  • Middles Notes: coconut solar
  • Base Notes: sugared musks
  • Smells Like: coconut and banana candies

This is a prime example that mixing banana with other tropical notes can have a more refreshing (and downright pleasant) aroma. Aside from ripe banana and green banana peel, the fragrance also features bergamot, jasmine and honey. “[It has a] wonderful honey scent. Don't let the banana add fool you. The banana here is bright, a little chemical, cheerful, but it only lasts for 15-20 minutes. And then—magnificent honey with flowers appears, especially the broom [flower] stands out. [It’s] very sweet, but not cloying. Not too loud, won't be intrusive to others,” shares one reviewer.

Fast Facts

  • Top Notes: bergamot, green banana peel accord, broom flower
  • Middles Notes: ripe banana, jasmine, orange flower
  • Base Notes: honey, labdanum
  • Smells Like: sweet floral banana

This is the most unique banana fragrance I've ever smelled. The banana aroma is subtle, but the rice milk and mochi notes make up for it. It's sweet, fruity and a little powdery, almost reminiscent of cereal milk. To me, this is the cool girl's banana fragrance. It feels grown up and sophisticated, far from the candy-like banana scents we're used to.

Fast Facts

  • Top Notes: blue banana, rice milk, mochi
  • Middles Notes: white hibiscus, toasted sesame
  • Base Notes: Madagascar vanilla, Australian sandalwood, akigalawood
  • Smells Like: fruity cereal milk

Banana Milkshake isn’t Ellis Brooklyn’s only standout banana fragrance. Isla Sirena, a citrussy, tropical scent was one of my favorite spring launches, and it also captured Yohay’s attention. “This perfume truly is vacation in a bottle without veering too far into the smelling like sunscreen territory. It's a solar scent that combines coconut, lime, banana, papaya and vanilla, which, yes, sounds bananas, but it somehow works. Island vibes, all day long.”

Fast Facts

  • Top Notes: blue java banana, creamy papaya, sea salt, lime
  • Middle Notes: coconut water, vanilla orchid, ginger flower
  • Base Notes: vetiver, brown sugar, teak wood
  • Smells Like: fruity and tropical banana

This perfume rarely stays in stock, and I can see why. Described as a true banana gourmand, shoppers can’t stop singing its praises, with one Sephora reviewer writing, “This is an exceptional perfume, that does not only deliver a fragrance but an EXPERIENCE. So warm, long-lasting, and very addictive to me.”
