Book of the Month

Having something fun to look forward to at the start of every month is exactly what gets me to power through those final tasks on my to-do list. For me, that something is getting to choose a new read thanks to my Book of the Month subscription, which was gifted to me over a year ago—and has served me well ever since. Speaking from this bookworm's experience, it's the perfect gift for any reader in your life, and since both Mother's Day and Father's Day are coming up quickly, there's no better time for me to tell you why.

What Is Book of the Month?

Book of the Month

Before I get into what exactly makes me look forward to receiving this box month after month, here's a quick overview of Book of the Month, in case you aren't familiar. With this subscription box, at the start of each month you receive one credit to choose between five hardcover book or audiobook options. And if you aren't excited about that month's choices or just need some time to catch up on your reads, you have the option to choose from a few additional most-loved books or save your credit to be used at a later time.

Most of the books offered fall under the fiction category, spanning genres of thriller, historical fiction, romance, fantasy, literary fiction mystery and more, so you (or your giftee) always have plenty of options.

Why I Love It

So what makes this better than just grabbing someone a gift card to pick up a few new reads themselves? Well, aside from the fact that my subscription takes a dent out of my monthly spending on books, I love that Book of the Month introduces me to some titles I wouldn't normally choose, but also offers ones I've been really looking forward to. I've picked up everything from lighthearted romances to enchanting fantasy series—because, yes, if the first in a series is offered through the subscription, you'll have the option to add any of the following books to your box to have matching editions on your shelf. Another huge benefit is that all of the physical books offered are hardbacks, and at $18/month, that's a serious discount from retail prices in this format.

Another thing I really appreciate about Book of the Month is the app that's connected to your subscription. While you could simply log on to the website each month if you prefer, I love having the app on my phone because it has tons of great features like the ability to listen to any audiobooks you choose, rate and review to earn badges and rewards, listen to podcast author interviews, browse add-on books ahead of your next box and more.

BTW, if you are looking for a Mother's or Father's Day gift, you might want to hear what my own mom (who's been getting Book of the Month even longer than I have) has to say about it. "My daily reading has increased and I look forward to the monthly selections to choose from," she explains. "All of the choices have made for good reading and have introduced me to some books I may not have normally chosen." So whether you or your giftee are simply looking to discover some new authors and genres or are following through on that resolution to reduce your screen time, Book of the Month is literally the gift that keeps on giving.

What Are the Subscription Options?

When it comes to setting up or gifting a subscription, you have a few options. For gifts, you can choose between a 3-, 6- or 12-book membership. When you register for yourself, you'll receive a monthly subscription that's currently priced at $18/month. However, if you want to skip a month or cancel, all you have to do is note that within the app before the 21st of each month. And if you decide late, you still have the option to skip and have that month's credit added to your account for later use.

My advice? If you're planning to gift any of the above options, go ahead and get your order in now to avoid the stress of last-minute planning. Then maybe snag a subscription for yourself, too, that you'll be sure to find yourself looking forward to monthly like I do.
