The hype is real

With the sheer number of films and shows dropping on Netflix daily, only a handful break into the streamer’s coveted Top 10. Even fewer manage to do it twice in the same year. But that’s exactly what the British crime drama Adolescence just pulled off. The four-part limited series originally premiered on Netflix on March 13 and quickly shot to the top spot within 24 hours. Now, it’s back in the Top 10 a whopping six months later.

The resurgence comes just days after the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards aired on Sunday, September 14, where Adolescence walked in with eight nominations and walked out with six major wins. Among the wins were Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Additionally, Stephen Graham took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actor, while breakout star Owen Cooper made history as the youngest actor to win an Emmy, snagging Outstanding Supporting Actor.

So, what’s all the hype?

Adolescence follows 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Cooper), a schoolboy whose life takes a terrifying turn when he’s arrested for the murder of a classmate. As his devastated parents try to make sense of it all, they team up with his therapist and the lead detective to uncover the truth and what they find isn’t what anyone expects.

Since its release, the series has sparked important conversations around the mental health crisis in young boys. As PureWow’s Executive Editor Alexia Dellner puts it, it’s a wake-up call to parents.

With a 98% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and now six Emmys under its belt, Adolescence is the crime drama you need to press play on.

Adolescence is streaming now on Netflix.
