This 2004 Box Office Flop Is Having a Surprise Netflix Comeback—And Honestly? I Kinda Loved It

The cast is stacked, too

An over 20-year-old movie is suddenly climbing Netflix’s Top 10—and no, I’m not talking about Happy Gilmore (which, let’s be real, earned its spot thanks to the buzz around its sequel). I’m talking about After the Sunset, a title that didn’t exactly ring any bells for me at first. But one quick look at the cast had me doing a double take… and then a deep Google dive.

Turns out, this movie totally flopped when it hit theaters back in 2004. It pulled in just under $63 million against a $60 million budget, so not great. And the critics weren’t any kinder. After the Sunset holds a rough 18% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences were slightly more generous, giving it a 52% rating. Still, not exactly a cinematic triumph.

But honestly? I gave it a shot anyway and I’m glad I did.

Here’s the setup: Max Burdett (Pierce Brosnan), a world-class jewel thief, has already swiped two of the three legendary Napoleon Diamonds. He retires with his equally brilliant partner/girlfriend Lola (Salma Hayek) to a dreamy tropical island. Everything seems chill… until the third diamond shows up on a cruise ship docked at their island. And so does FBI agent Stan Lloyd (Woody Harrelson), determined to make sure Max stays retired. Spoiler: He doesn’t.

Yes, it’s a predictable heist plot. But the cast? Stacked. Brosnan, Hayek, Harrelson, Don Cheadle, Naomie Harris—and even surprise cameos from Shaquille O'Neal and Jeff Garlin. It’s part action, part comedy part tropical vacation fantasy.

Is it a forgotten classic? No. But is it way better than the reviews suggest? In my opinion, yes. If you want something light, fun and a little twisty, it’s worth a watch—especially while it’s free on Netflix.
