If I had to list my all-time favorite actors, Denzel Washington would be right at the top. He’s a two-time Oscar winner, a legendary talent and one of the few actors whose name alone is enough to get me to the theater. No trailer, no convincing necessary—if Denzel’s in it, I’m watching it.

So imagine my excitement when I heard about his latest project, Highest to Lowest. In the film, Washington plays a legendary music mogul known for having “the best ears in the business.” But when he becomes the target of a ransom plot, he finds himself caught in a life-or-death moral dilemma.

The movie marks the fifth collaboration between Washington and director Spike Lee, following iconic films Malcolm X, Mo' Better Blues, He Got Game and Inside Man. Highest to Lowest is a modern reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s classic crime thriller High and Low, now set against the gritty backdrop of present-day New York City.

The cast also includes Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera and A$AP Rocky. But let's get into the trailer.

The 52-second first look is set to James Brown’s "The Payback," layered with a powerful voiceover from Washington' character. As his monologue unfolds, quick-cut visuals flash across the screen—stacks of money, A$AP Rocky in the studio, Washington shouting and of course, high-speed police chases and intense fight sequences (because what’s a crime thriller without those?).

“There’s more to life than just making money. It’s integrity. It’s what you stand for. It’s what you actually believe in. Do you believe in yourself? Do you believe you’ll be successful?” Washington asks, his voice full of urgency. He continues, “The hard times will come from the good times. The hard times will come from success. The hard times will come from the money. And the mayhem follows.”

“Can you handle the mayhem? Can you handle the money? Can you handle the success? Can you handle the failure? Can you handle the lovers? Can you handle the memes? Can you handle everything in between?” he asks.

The trailer then cuts to a calm but intense shot of Washington seated, speaking directly to someone off-screen, “That’s the question I have for you. Can you handle it?”

It all wraps with a single, haunting line: “All money ain’t good money.”

Highest to Lowest hits theaters on August 22 and will stream on Apple TV+ starting September 5.
