One of the biggest nights in fashion, better known as the Met Gala, is fast approaching, and I'm excited for the stars to bring this year’s theme to life. I've seen a variety of creative Met Gala themes over the years, from American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity to last year’s Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. To celebrate this year’s exhibition theme, Costume Art, attendees have been directed by curator Andrew Bolton to explore it through "the dressed body," including but not limited to pregnant, corpulent, disabled, naked and nude bodies.
Per the MET's official website, the theme will focus on Western art dating from prehistoric times to the present, looking at the connection between The Costume Institute and other artwork in the MET's collection. This year's gala is extra special because in addition to fundraising for the Institute, it inaugurates the Condé M. Nast galleries at the museum, which from now on will be the 11,500-square-foot home of The Costume Institute in what was formerly the museum gift shop.
In honor of the red carpet event, I'm strolling down memory lane to revisit some of the best concepts. Keep reading for a complete list of Met Gala themes, dating back to 1971.
