There’s a saying that “nothing in life is guaranteed” and wow, does that feel true this week. Netflix has officially canceled The Waterfront, one of its most popular shows of the summer, and fans are not taking the news well.

Despite debuting at number one just days after its June release and spending five weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 chart for English-language series (three of those in the top spot, no less), per Deadline, it still wasn’t enough to secure a second season.

The cancellation comes about two months after the series first dropped on the streamer. Loosely inspired by the real-life story of creator Kevin Williamson, the show followed the Buckley family—generational fishermen dealing with secrets, betrayal, addiction and greed—in the fictional town of Havenport, North Carolina.

The cast included Holt McCallany, Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, Maria Bello and Brady Hepner. And let’s not even talk about that season 1 cliffhanger—because now we’ll never know what happens next.

Unsurprisingly, the internet was quick to react. Under Deadline’s post announcing the cancellation, fans flooded the comments with frustration:

"Not fair. I'm so disappointed. It’s a great show."
"Why are they out here cancelling good shows like this?"
"Boooo."

Another user summed it up perfectly, writing, "This one makes no sense. It wasn’t badly rated, wasn’t panned by critics, didn’t have terrible viewership numbers… It was actually a pretty entertaining show."

Shortly after the news broke, the show's creator took to Instagram to reflect. Sharing a photo from the show featuring McCallany and guest star Topher Grace, Williamson wrote, "A big thank you to everyone who watched The Waterfront. While I’m sad the Buckleys won’t be back for season 2, I’m celebrating the joy that was season 1."

"I had the pleasure of working with a dream cast and crew. My heart is full of gratitude for all the people who brought their talents to the show in both NC and LA. You were all amazing.”

Williamson also thanked Universal TV and Netflix “for taking a chance on a very personal story.”

No word yet on whether another network might revive The Waterfront but for now, fans are left with one stellar season, a cliffhanger and a lot of feelings.
