In Scarpetta, Kidman plays Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta, a woman with a tumultuous past (and, honestly, present), who is out to catch a serial killer.
First of all, the Prime Video series is absolutely star-studded. In addition to Kidman, we get Jamie Lee Curtis (playing her boisterous sister), Simon Baker (as her secret-keeping husband), Bobby Cannavale (as her brash brother-in-law) and Ariana DeBose (as her grieving niece). This means we get A-list stars in nearly every scene we see, making for great TV, despite the missteps in casting.
Kidman is spectacular, but really wrong for the role. Scarpetta is supposed to be a chain-smoking, get-your-hands-dirty kind of gal. Kidman is a rich matriarch (The Perfect Couple) / powerful CEO (Babygirl) kind of woman.
Similarly, Curtis is fully wrong for her role—and, similarly, I love her in it anyway. Curtis's character is a sex-positive free spirit. And while neither Curtis's nor Kidman's roles seem like the right fit, their scenes together—which are really just sisterly screaming matches—are so fun to watch.
