A new legal drama has hit the scene—and if you're a fan of sharp courtroom battles, juicy twists and just the right dose of romance and humor, then The Rainmaker should be at the top of your watch list. The series premiered on USA Network on Friday, August 15 and Peacock gave subscribers early access to the first episode. And let me just say: I’m hooked.

Even before I pressed play, the trailer had me thinking, "This is the show Suits fans have been waiting for." The vibe? Smart, slick, and packed with enough legal drama to keep your brain firing. But unlike Suits, The Rainmaker adds a layer of darkness and mystery that sets it apart—and might even be better suited to today’s audience.

But let’s rewind for a sec: What is The Rainmaker actually about?

The show follows Rudy Baylor (played by Milo Callaghan), a fresh-out-of-law-school underdog who finds himself going head-to-head with courtroom heavyweight Leo Drummond (played by John Slattery). Alongside his girlfriend (played by Madison Iseman), his tough-as-nails boss and her delightfully disheveled paralegal, Rudy stumbles onto two conspiracies connected to the mysterious death of a client’s son.

If the name The Rainmaker sounds familiar, it’s because the show is based on the 1997 film of the same name, which was written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola and adapted from John Grisham’s bestselling novel. That film starred Matt Damon, Claire Danes, Jon Voight, Danny DeVito and Mickey Rourke—just to name a few.

Back to the new series: The trailer promised intensity, emotion and more than a few “OMG” moments—and the first episode delivered on all fronts. I even did the unthinkable and put my phone down while watching, just so I wouldn’t miss a single detail. That never happens.

And while I won’t spoil anything, the episode ends with a twist I didn’t see coming (and I usually see everything coming). If this is any indication of what’s ahead, I’ll definitely be tuning in every week.

The Rainmaker airs Fridays at 10PM ET/PT on USA Network, with episodes available to stream on Peacock one week later.

While you wait for the next installment, you can also stream the original 1997 film on Paramount+ to get a taste of the story’s roots.
