Two major soccer wins and a comeback from Venus Williams

Despite not having participated in organized sports for years now, to me August still feels like pre-season.

We’re right in the thick of the WBNA season, which runs until mid-September before the playoffs begin, meaning each consecutive game carries more weight toward those end-of-season rankings. And for anyone still riding the high of England and Nigeria’s recent soccer wins, the NWSL kicked off the 2025 season on August 1 with record-breaking turnouts for the opening matches. Women’s tennis has proved a thrilling affair so far this year, but for me nothing quite beats the joys of the U.S. Open—August 24 through September 7—when it feels like truly anything could happen over at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens. Personally, my fingers are crossed hoping Venus Williams can score a wild card entry into the singles tournament and keep her recent comeback going strong.

So even though my late-summer days are no longer occupied with early morning training sessions (beating the heat is well worth that 5:30 a.m. alarm), that vibe of fresh beginnings and endless possibilities remains. Can New York Liberty give a repeat performance to take championship the title once again? Will Debinha of the Kansas City Current maintain her lead as this year’s most-likely NWSL MVP? I can’t wait to see where the summer takes us. Here’s the latest need-to-know tidings in women’s sports.
