‘Tis the season for championship titles, winning streaks and Hail Mary moves to secure one last chance at a spot in the playoffs. September marks the end of so many competition seasons with the World Surf League Finals, the World Athletic Championships for track and field and the final tennis major of the year, the US Open. But it’s also smack dab in the middle of beloved fall/winter sports like professional soccer and basketball. What that ultimately means is that September is the time for athletes to go big or risk going home empty handed.

Time is running out for teams like Gotham FC and Indiana Fever to secure their spots in their respective playoff seasons. And you can feel that “now or never” mentality kicking in, whether it’s Jorja Johnson and Tyra Black’s incredible gold medal victory at the pickleball Walgreens Open or Ruth Croft’s unexpected win over perennial favorite Courtney Dauwalter at the 2025 UTMB ultramarathon.

As someone who can barely keep it together no matter who is in the lead, I’m preparing myself for a month of incredible season finishes and the kind of out-of-the-blue moves that turn an OK season into a Cinderella story. Whether you’re a fan of soccer, basketball, rugby or track and field, there’s plenty of opportunity for athletes to grasp their moment in the spotlight. Here’s everything to know about women’s sports this September.

  • We are just days away from crowning another US Open champion. Tune in today, September4, to watch world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka take on Jessica Pegula, while Naomi Osaka faces off against Amanda Anisimova.
  • The Kansas City Current continued their winning streak with a record-setting 11th win over the North Carolina Courage over Labor Day weekend. Tune in on Saturday, September 6, to see if they can keep the wins coming in a match against Bay FC, who will have the home field advantage at PayPal Park in San Jose.
  • Jorja Johnson and Tyra Black took gold in women’s doubles at the Walgreens Open pickleball tournament on August 31 after a stunning upset over the previously undefeated Anna Leigh Waters and Anna Bright in the semifinal and a thrilling final match against Catherine Parenteau and Parris Todd.

  • Sifan Hassan won the Sydney Marathon (on August 31) in its first year as a World Major becoming the first woman ever to break 2:20 on the continent of Oceania. And like a true icon, she celebrated with the largest ice cream cone I’ve ever seen.
  • Venus Williams continued to demonstrate why she’s one of the best to ever do it making it to the quarterfinals in the US Open women’s doubles on September 2 with partner (and superstar in her own right) Leylah Fernandez.
  • With four spots left in the WNBA playoffs and five teams still in contention—New York Liberty, Seattle Storm, Golden State Valkyries, Indiana Fever and Los Angeles Sparks—the next few weeks are sure to bring out some of the most competitive play we’ve seen yet this season.
  • Women’s professional soccer fans are putting their money where their mouths are with new data that suggests NWSL supporters are 58 percent more likely to make a purchase because of a brand’s sponsorship than fans of any other women’s sports—which is phenomenal news for the growth of the sport.
  • Turns out Tenniscore is much bigger than just a cute summer athleisure trend—more luxury fashion brands are getting in on the tennis hype, both on and off the court. Miu Miu partnered with Coco Gauff and New Balance to outfit three of her summer tournaments this year, and Dior recently announced a partnership with Olympic Gold medalist Zheng Qinwen. Could tennis soon rival the WNBA as the most fashionable sport to watch?
  • The Rugby World Cup continues with more pool matches through Sunday, September 7, before the knockout stage begin. Team USA has one final chance to up their rankings in order to make the quarterfinals with a match against Samoa on Saturday.
  • The 2025 World Athletics Championships kicks off on Saturday, September 13, in Tokyo marking Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s final professional competition before she retires. The 100 meter finals will take place 10:13 pm local time on Sunday, September 14.
  • Freezing weather and unexpected snowfall made this year’s UTMB ultramarathon race one for the books, but New Zealander Ruth Croft managed to push through it all to take the win, completing the 108-mile course more than 30 minutes ahead of second-place finisher, Camille Bruyas of France. This also made Croft the very first woman to win all three UTMB World Series Finals races, having won the OCC in 2018 and the CCC in 2015.
