Critics and Viewers Can’t Agree on Netflix’s #1 Movie Right Now—Here's Why Everyone's Watching

Now I HAVE to watch

It’s not every week that Netflix’s Top 10 gets totally taken over by one of its brand-new releases (although let’s be honest, it does happen kind of a lot. Remember that terrifying catfishing documentary? Or that one animated movie that became the streamer’s most-watched film ever?). Well, they’ve struck gold again—this time with a new rom-com called The Wrong Paris.

The romantic comedy follows a small-town Texas girl with big dreams. After getting accepted into an art school in Paris, Dawn (Miranda Cosgrove) is over the moon until she realizes there’s no way she can afford to actually live there. Enter The Honeypot, a wildly popular dating reality show that’s filming its next season in the City of Lights. If Dawn can get cast, the paycheck could cover her housing. Miraculously, she makes it on the show but here’s the twist: her Parisian dream? It’s actually in Texas. Paris, Texas, to be exact.

After a classic producer bait-and-switch, the contestants are introduced to a smokeshow cowboy bachelor named Trey (Pierson Fodé). Now Dawn has one goal: get eliminated fast. Easy enough, right? It’s not like she’s going to fall for a ridiculously hot rancher or anything.

The Wrong Paris, which also stars Yvonne Orji and Frances Fisher, was directed by Janeen Damian (who also directed Lindsay Lohan in Irish Wish and Falling for Christmas).

The movie dropped on Netflix on September 12 and within just a few days it snagged the coveted number one spot on the streamer’s Top 10. Surprisingly, though, critics haven’t been quite as impressed. It’s sitting at an average 60 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Even with classic rivalries and storybook romance attempts, The Wrong Paris just doesn’t scratch a genuine itch,” one critic wrote.

Viewers, however, are having a totally different experience. One fan gushed, “The PERFECT Girl's Night movie. Hilarious and romantic with the right amount of cheese.”

With reactions all over the map, The Wrong Paris feels like one of those movies you kinda have to see for yourself. And hey, at just under two hours—what’s there to lose?

The Wrong Paris is streaming on Netflix now.
