2000s Athleisure Trend: Anna Kournikova, Paris Hilton, lululemon, Juicy Couture, Adidas bag

The year may have only just begun, but I’m already sensing a theme when it comes to 2026’s biggest style trends: nostalgia. From ‘90s dad sneakers to aughts-inspired snakeskin to beauty looks plucked from 2016, the fashion and beauty zeitgeist has been moving forward by looking back—and, apparently, that includes gymwear. Sleek, minimalist workout sets had their moment. But you might want to start shoving them to the back of your drawer in favor of fun separates that seem straight out of a 2000s workout video (paging Billy Blanks).

According to my TikTok and Instagram feeds, the 2000s athleisure aesthetic is making a comeback, and as an Ed Hardy-collecting, Juicy Couture tracksuit-wearing millennial, I’ve been ready. The vibe is the opposite of the muted Pilates Princess look—think bright colors, big logos, layered tanks and sporty stripes. Even the yoga mom favorite, foldover flares, are cool again.

Those who were there might recall the paparazzi pics of Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow leaving a Tracy Anderson training sesh in Freecity sweats (brought back recently by Dakota Johnson, also at a Tracy Anderson class), or Jessica Alba and Paris Hilton traipsing around Los Angeles in low-slung velour trackpants. And how could we forget tennis (and tabloid) darling Anna Kournikova strutting her stuff in stripes and capris, defining sporty style both on and off the court?

I’m old enough to remember when gym clothes were comfortable, colorful and a way to incorporate a bit of your personality into your sweat sessions. But if you, like me, have mostly cleared your closet of those “vintage” athleticwear staples—or hope to rock them for the first time (I see you, Gen Z)—you can channel the 2000s with these present-day pieces that nail the vibe.

From the sporty colorblocking to the front-and-center logo, this Nike tank totally feels like a throwback to Kournikova’s days on the tennis circuit. It’s made of the brand’s moisture-wicking performance fabric and comes with a built-in shelf bra, so you’ll be ready to roll as soon as you hit the gym (or court).

If you’re looking to lean into the “leisure” aspect of athleisure, both Skims and Artizia make cotton jersey versions of these yoga pants that are perfect for lounging. But if you’re planning to chaturanga until you break a sweat, I suggest opting for Athleta’s take on the silhouette that was popular when I was in high school. The flared style is soft, stretchy and shape-enhancing, say reviewers, while the nylon/Lycra fabric is designed to be quick-drying and breathable—that is, actually made to workout in. And that ruched, fold-over waistband looks exactly how I remember it (but, thankfully, seems to sit a bit higher on the waist).

Stripe accents à la Adidas were everywhere in the aughts, from classic track pants to microshorts that could very well have been worn as underwear. A 2026 compromise? These not too tight, not too loose Pacer shorts, finished with a high-rise elasticized waist. They’re guaranteed to be airy and breathable—not just because of the ventilated fit, but also because they feature Adidas’s Climacool, sweat-dissipating fabric.

True story: I was bullied by the kids at summer camp because I didn’t own a Juicy tracksuit—except I was their counselor. It traumatized me enough to immediately go out and buy four, and honestly, they really were that good. I recently got my hands on a similar hoodie set that made me long for that peak 2000s fit, so where better to look than the original source? Juicy Couture is indeed still making ‘em, and it doesn’t get much better than this pink-trimmed cotton velour set—complete with those back snap pockets that do more for a booty than a squat ever could.

Flirty, fitted tank tops were just the thing to go with our track pants, and the girlies loved a layered look. What a treat, then, to find that Victoria’s Secret (one of our athleisure go-tos back in the day) makes a pre-layered top in a stretchy cotton blend. Despite the sleek fit, there is indeed a shelf bra sewn in, so you don’t have to go for a third set of straps.

You can’t revisit the 2000s without revisiting capris, and these Free People ones really take me back, down to that notch detail on the side hem. The ultra-cropped leggings are built to move in 2026, though, thanks to their hydrophobic, four-way stretch fabric and thick, supportive waistband. They even have stash pockets for small essentials (just swap the iPod for AirPods).

The who’s who of Hollywood health nuts swore by these luxe loungers in the ‘00s, and in the past year alone, they’ve been spotted on Johnson and Mary-Kate Olsen. Safe to say they’re making a comeback. These 100 percent cotton sweatpants feature the LA-based brand’s signature blocky logo and dove graphic, and come in more than 20 colors.

If you were heading to a yoga class back in the day, your outfit wasn’t complete without a light, slouchy sweatshirt draping off your shoulders. Today, you can find your zen in this perfectly lightweight style that, as one buyer says, doesn’t need constant adjusting.

I had to do a double-take when I scrolled by these lululemon bottoms—they look so authentically 2000s, I thought I had accidentally ended up on eBay. Between the sports team-inspired graphic, contrast stripe down the leg and cropped, flared cut, they’re nostalgic in the best way. But I would bet that they’re even more comfortable than the gym pants I wore in 2005 since they’re constructed of the brand’s buttery-soft Nulu material.

Who can forget the chokehold vintage-looking bowling bags had on us back in the aughts? If you need any more proof that the 2000s vibes are in again, consider all the recent reviews of this compact (2.5-liter) Adidas style, which comes with both top handles and a crossbody strap—not to mention this very Y2K-coded metallic hue.
