I grew up in flip-flops as a Florida native, throwing on whatever drugstore flops were around the house before jumping on my bike to find adventure in my small hometown, like Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird. Later in New York City, I followed the fashion crowd and wore Havianas, the Brazilian flip-flop, distinctive for neutral colors and a low profile, before changing into Manolo Blahniks at work. But, now that I’m a mom with feet that are tired of being roped into high heels and shoes with no support, I’m ready for a flip-flop sandal that meets me where I’m at—ready for a massage.

And so, after consulting with a podiatrist, I tried the much-ballyhooed (and Jennifer-Aniston-approved) Archies Crystal Flip Flops ($45), which are known for their superior arch support on a recent ten-day, 2,200-mile coast-to-coast car trip, not expecting much difference from my lifetime of low-effort thong sandals. Here’s the verdict.

Meet the Podiatrist

Kirsty Markopoulos is the founder of Talaria Podiatrist of Thornbury, a podiatry clinic outside Melbourne, Australia. She has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Podiatry from La Trobe University. She works with a wide range of patients from pediatric to geriatric and works with modalities including shockwave therapy, dry needling and orthotics.

Do Podiatrists Recommend Archies?

Yes. The shoes were developed with podiatrist input, which I noticed immediately when I felt the arch support. Markopoulos sells Archies at her clinic, and even took pairs for her and her husband on their honeymoon in Greece. “Invest in some Archie’s over your normal thongs,” she advises. “The support will allow you to walk further without pain regardless of your foot type and they may just save you!” She notes that her husband, who suffers from plantar fasciitis, experienced no pain even while wearing them to scramble up steep ruins.

My Review of Archies Flip Flops

Archies

I needed to wear flip-flops on my cross-country road trip at the height of summer heat, but since I hadn’t broken the shoes in, I was initially worried. I needn’t have been. Right upon slipping these on, I was pleased with the softness of the closed-cell foam construction, and I appreciated that the toe strap is molded as a part of the shoe, not punched through from the bottom like in cheaper options.

But the arch support was the real revelation, massaging my tired midfoot with every step during a long afternoon of thrift store shopping in Austin. There’s a cup carve out section for my heels, and I didn’t feel any pinpricks of pain back there as I sometimes do after long hours on my feet. The only issue I had with fit was that the inner arch lift repositioned my feet such that my pinky toe began rubbing against my next-to-last toe, resulting in a blister. TMI alert: I think it was due to the very sweaty conditions of midsummer Sun Belt travel, and after I bandaged the blister, it didn’t come back.

Additionally, I adored the tiny little off-center crystal set in a bezel on the strap, which made me feel like I hadn’t lost all my style mojo to arch support and foot pain. The only ding I’d give to the shoes, which come in more than 15 colorways, is that the material is not waterproof. I wish I could wear these shoes to pools and the beach and be confident that water wouldn’t degrade them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Jennifer Aniston Wear Archies?

Aniston has been spotted in more than one pair of these shoes, according to Page Six. She sported a red pair with exercise clothes on the streets of New York, has been seen in a black pair multiple times and even wore an olive green version on the set of The Morning Show.

Do you size up or down in Archies flip flops?

If you are between sizes, size up in Archies flip-flops. That’s the brand’s recommendation, and it’s what I did—my usual 7.5-sized feet fit into the size 8’s perfectly. It’s important to wear correctly sized Archies because, unlike with traditional flip-flops, the arch support is engineered to hit your foot at a certain spot—so a too-large or too-small shoe could risk misalignment of the arch, which defeats the purpose of the shoe.

Why Might Archies Flip Flops hurt?

While my Archies felt great right from the start, some wearers report that the straps rubbed painfully into their skin at first. (Archies straps are made to stretch to fit your foot with a gentle tug early in the wearing.) And I had an unexpected blister between my fourth and pinky toe after a long day of wearing Archies walking through New Orleans—even though the shoes didn’t rub there, it seems my now lifted arches added some pressure to my outer toes. I slapped on a bit of Neosporin and a bandage, however, and I was good to go.
