The 21 Best Amazon Coats of the Season, Straight from 3 Top Stylists

When it comes to cold-weather apparel, no article of clothing is more important to invest in than a good coat. Contrary to popular belief, however, you don’t need to spend a fortune to get quality outerwear. These days, you have your pick of the best Amazon coats in nearly any style you can imagine, from staples like this oversized denim shirt jacket ($33) and wrap coat ($87; $64), to trendy options, like this Levi's faux leather bomber (from $100; $61)—many of which come at affordable price points. 

To find the best Amazon coats for every preference, budget and body type, I researched more than 40 coats, jackets and puffers and narrowed the selection down to the 21 that best met the criteria above. I also consulted with three stylists to find this season's hottest styles that you'll be wearing for years to come.

• Jazmine Motley-Maddox is an image and style strategist specializing in film and television. Her fashion insight and expertise has been featured in publications such as Brides, Insider, Men’s Health and on the BBC. 
• Kim Appelt is a personal and celebrity stylist and a contributor for numerous publications, including BC Living and Fresh Magazine. She is also an on-air expert at CityLine and the author of the 2023 wardrobe guide, Style for Everybody. Her work has been seen on the runways and red carpet for events such as the Daytime Emmys and the Juno Awards.

If you're curious about what's hot in the coat department this winter, here are five trends to keep an eye on, according to Motley-Maddox.

• Floor-length silhouettes: While mid-length and cropped jackets are always a safe bet, Motley-Maddox suggests going bold with a floor-length coat this season. “Whether you're short or tall, take the hem of your coats a half-inch to [1] inch beyond your ankles for a theatrical, dramatic draping overcoat effect,” she says. Phantom of the Opera, anyone?
  
• Colossal collars: Big collars are in this season, and the bigger the collar, the more fashionable the coat, says Motley-Maddox. “Whether you're in an aviator, trench or knitwear…go for the exaggerated, sharp and dart-like collar,” she advises.
  
• Texture: When it comes to fabric, “Don't let your monochromatic look fall flat—add some texture to give it some life," suggests Motley-Maddox. She recommends trying out a floor-length leather or vinyl trench, one with shearling or sherpa or a longer cashmere coat for a touch of luxury.
  
• Color and shine: According to Motley-Maddox, now is the perfect time to spice up your wardrobe with some pops of color—especially when it comes to your coats. “Make that leather trench chocolate or classic gold,” she recommends. “Maybe the shearling is silver and the sherpa is Cadbury purple or navy. The cashmere coat is red or big box plaid." She adds: "Color and shine always adds pop to a look.” 
  
• The new bomber: If longer coats don't appeal to you, you can always try a new bomber style that's full of volume, says Motley-Maddox. “A bomber can easily take your look from day to night,” she explains. “There's the duvet bomber for volume, a leather bomber with elongated sleeves and a cuffed waist or the oversized take on the classic nylon.”

• Wool: Wool is made primarily from sheep's fur, which equates to some of the warmest fabric there is. That's because it has air pockets that provide natural insulation and make it water-resistant (aka perfect for cold, wet, snowy days). Keep in mind that this fabric sometimes causes itchiness, however, so layer up as needed.
  
• Down: Down coats are insulated with either goose feathers, duck feathers or both. Down creates tiny pockets that trap and retain warm air to keep you from being cold, even in the harshest of conditions. Coats made of this material are often heavy, quilted and puffy in appearance. You'll want to note that this material often loses its warming effect when it gets wet, however.
  
• Down alternative: Not the biggest fan of wearing bird, but also not the biggest fan of hypothermia? Luckily, there are plenty of alternatives to down that may work just as well. The most popular is PrimaLoft, which was invented for members of the United States Army and is now utilized by many mainstream winter gear brands. The best part about PrimaLoft is that it insulates even when wet, so you'll get the best of both worlds.
  
• Polyester: Made from plastic, this durable material does not stretch or wrinkle easily, making it a great option for coats. It also has moisture-wicking qualities and is ultra weather-resistant, meaning it'll hold up on harsh winter days.
  
• Fleece: For our vegan friends who want to stay warm, fleece is the way to go. A fuzzy synthetic fabric that's meant to mimic a sheep's coat, fleece is largely made with polyester. It manages to be lightweight while giving you coziness for days (it also dries super quickly). For a more breathable version, there's cotton fleece.
  
• Nylon: This versatile, flexible fabric is ideal for coats because it is highly water- and stain-resistant, keeping you dry in rain, hail or snow. It's also super easy to clean. It's important to note that this fabric is not super heat-insulating; however, making it less ideal for ultra-cold days.
