The first chill in the air, I treat myself to two things: A PSL and shopping for a cozy cashmere sweater. From cardigans to pullovers, chunky styles to cropped, it's fun browsing options that promise to keep me warm while offering classic style. After indulging in my favorite fall passtime (in which I got recommendations from fellow editors and reviewed dozens of brands), I have pulled together a list of the 13 best cashmere sweaters for sale right now, including the luxurious, editor-approved Jenni Kayne cashmere cocoon cardigan ($475) that feels like an all-day hug, to this affordable (but fabulous) Quince Mongolian cashmere crewneck ($50), available in an appealing fall-appropriate rainbow of hues.

Still, why invest in cashmere? “Cashmere is renowned for its unparalleled softness and luxurious feel against the skin,” says Erin Fortin, director of apparel design at Garnet Hill. “As a hypoallergenic material, it surpasses regular wool in insulation while remaining lightweight and naturally resistant to wrinkles, making it an excellent choice when traveling.” While cashmere tends to boast a high price tag, adding a cashmere sweater or two to your winter wardrobe is totally worth it since the material is “versatile and breathable enough to be worn year-round,” says Veronica Tan, senior director of apparel and accessories at Quince. I’m already on board, and after taking a peek at these top picks, you certainly won’t need much more convincing. (But if you do, you can check out our experts' insights in the FAQs at the bottom of this story.)

How I Chose the Best Cashmere Sweaters

With so many incredible cashmere sweater options on the market, I had to do some serious digging to choose the best pieces out there. To determine this list, I prioritized eight pieces PureWow editors and testers have personally tried and loved. I then expanded my scope to consider options from other reputable brands our readers know, love and will get excited about showing off. I took into account versatility, overall quality, overall value (is the price worth it?), helpful features (from pockets to buttons) and recommendations from our experts. Oh, and did I mention there are multiple under-$100 options? Now, let’s get snuggly.

Best Overall Cashmere Sweater

1. Banana Republic Lightweight Cashmere Crew-Neck Sweater

What I Like

  • featherweight knit
  • three-seasons versatility

What I Don't Like

  • narrow color range
  • no plus sizes

Banana Republic

This sweater is my go-to when I need to take along a layer for an outdoor event that might turn chilly, for a theater where the AC might be too cranked and for an outfit that I don’t want to bulk up with any of my chunkier knits. It has a straight-across hem, a simple crew neckline and cuffs that aren’t too tight. And versatile? Yes, it works as well over a spaghetti-strap dress and heels as it does French tucked into a pair of jeans on the weekend grocery run. Finally, it hand-washes without losing its shape, as long as I block it on a towel to dry. Everyone should buy this sweater; you’ll wonder how you kept away the chill without it.

2. Reformation Fantino Cashmere Sweater

What Bowie Likes

  • oversized fit
  • sustainable materials

What Bowie Doesn't Like

  • limited color options

Reformation

Senior Director Rachel Bowie cannot say enough good things about this gorgeous ribbed Reformation knit: “I cannot sing its praises more emphatically. It’s soft and roomy, perfect for throwing on with jeans or with leather pants, or even over a dress. Also, the quality is top-notch. I actually only got it because of the reviews, which are all raves (apparently, Reformation is known for its sweaters). It was definitely my most worn/reached-for item last fall!” If that doesn’t convince you, perhaps the luscious Italian cashmere will do the trick. As for style, the polo collar lends a posh vibe to this oversize cardigan, as does the ribbed texture. Right now it comes in only four (admittedly stunning) neutral tones, but fingers crossed for more fun color options later this year.

Best Fitted Cardigan

3. Jenni Kayne Cooper Cardigan

What Wu Likes

  • low pillage
  • tight weave

What Wu Doesn't Like

  • pricey
  • too heavy for hotter weather

Jenni Kayne

"Of all my knitwear—and I do have a hefty knitwear collection—I stand by JK for the quality," says SEO and audience development editor Marissa Wu. "It's the most insulating of all my knits. The weave is very tight and dense, without being super scratchy. This means that not much wind will make it through. Whenever I think I'm going to be cold, I reach for a JK sweater, and I know I can probably reduce the layering." Wu says that the Cooper cardigan specifically has been a really cute, fun twist on traditional knitwear. "I like the sculpted silhouette, which makes something that is normally slouchy and informal something I can wear to a dinner, thrown over slacks or a skirt. I also like wearing it over dresses with some of the bottom buttons undone, or with a white tee underneath." Wu says that Jenni Kayne sweaters don't pill as often or as heavily as other sweaters she owns—a huge plus in the maintenance department.

Best Oversized Cashmere Sweater

4. Quince Mongolian Cashmere Oversized Boyfriend Cardigan Sweater

What I Like

  • tortoise-look buttons
  • plus sizes

What I Don't Like

  • bulky under tighter coats
  • sleeves long on petites

Quince

I feel so quiet luxury when I wear this oversized cardigan, since the seven-gauge long-fiber cashmere weave is so smooth, warm and thick. I’m petite, but the oversized fit works on me still, fitting me more like a car coat. In cooler weather, I’ll wear it with a wide leather belt, and in transitional seasons, I keep the front open like a robe. I’ve worn for a couple years and it hasn’t lost its shape, especially since I’m careful to dry clean it (I don’t want to risk misshaping the heavy knit). The knit is so soft, I can even wear it on my bare arms—a rarity as I’m sensitive to wool and cashmere.

5. Jenni Kayne Cashmere Cocoon Cardigan

What Dubyak Likes

  • oversize fit
  • fine fibers for less pilling

What Dubyak Doesn’t Like

  • high price point

Jenni Kayne

Between its timeless, elegant aesthetic and its buttery soft fabric that feels like a dream against your skin, it’s no surprise former beauty director Jenny Jin and former commerce editor Olivia Dubyak, immediately fell in love with the PureWow reader-favorite Jenni Kayne cocoon cardigan. It’s a versatile piece that not only serves to cover your shoulders in a chilly office or airplane, but it also elevates any outfit with its visibly high-quality, 100 percent Mongolian cashmere material. Its oversize fit is perfect for pulling off that effortless cool-girl look, while its faux-horn buttons serve as yet another chic detail. Of course, it’s the cardi’s long-lasting durability that makes it worth the price tag, at least in our editors’ eyes. Better yet, it comes in nine of the dreamiest colorways, so you can snag a hue to pair perfectly with everything in your wardrobe.

6. Naadam Essential Cashmere Sweater

What Abby Likes

  • under $100
  • classic silhouette
  • sustainable properties

What Abby Doesn't Like

  • may pill quickly
  • sleeves may be too short for some

Naadam

Looking to feel luxurious without trying (or spending) too much? Scoop up this high-value, remarkably wallet-friendly sweater crafted from 100 percent Mongolian cashmere. It boasts a versatile crew neckline and a timeless fit that even Goldilocks would label as “not too tight and not too baggy,” says PureWow editor Abby Hepworth. It’s no wonder the chic style, which is available in a wide variety of colors, has earned a stamp of approval from more than 3,000 customers. “I expected this to be a fairly thin sweater, given the price tag, but it feels really plush and the light hue isn’t at all see through,” writes Hepworth in her review. She added that it does run true to size (if you’re between sizes we recommend choosing the smaller), but she found the sleeves to be a tad short for her 5-foot, 9-inch frame. “Honestly, I usually end up pushing up my sleeves so I’d still say it’s worth buying, but for anyone who loves to get extra cozy and pull their sleeves down over them hands, this might not be the style for you—unless you’re petite.”

7. J.Crew Cashmere Classic-Fit Sweater

What We Like

  • extended sizing
  • timeless look
  • lots of color options

What We Don’t Like

  • some reviewers say it pills quickly

J.Crew

There are so many great things to recommend about this sweater, which comes in 12 vivid colors. Let's start with the fit: “I love that it’s both loose in the tummy and fitted in the shoulders and arms, for a look that feels buttoned up and profesh, but also uber flattering,” says Editor in Chief Jillian Quint, who is a major fan. In a wide size range, (sizes XXXS to 3X), it has a timeless silhouette, and feels super-luxurious. Fashion Editor Abby Hepworth adores this J.Crew style saying, “I actually own this exact sweater in so many colors. It does fit true to size, but I also own a few where I went up one from my usual for a baggier fit. The material is so dreamy and doesn’t pill all that easily (although I do always make sure to depill before storing them away at the end of the season).” Plus, it’s produced in accordance with The Good Cashmere Standard, which upholds fair conditions for both the goats and the farmworkers of Mongolia, where the cashmere is sourced.

8. Quince Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck Sweater

What We Like

  • under $100
  • classic fit
  • tons of colors

What We Don't Like

  • hemline might be too short for some
  • plus sizes cost $10 more; maternity sizes $20 more

Quince

I get it: Investing in a cashmere sweater often means a hit to your paycheck, but not with this beauty boasting over 7,600 shopper reviews and an average 4.9-star rating. Ribbed details on the cuffs, necklines and hems, along with a slightly cropped fit, keep this traditional sweater style looking au courant, while a crewneck and uber soft, grade-A Mongolian cashmere fabric keep the look anchored and timeless. To be honest, I really didn’t think it was possible to make a high-quality cashmere knit for just 50 bucks, but Quince has somehow found a way. “I was super surprised by how luxe the material feels,” says Hepworth in her review. “It is so soft—maybe a smidge scratchier than the Naadam sweater.” Based on reviews, lighter colors do appear to be a bit see through, particularly the white and pale pink hues, but at this price it’s worth snagging one (or more), even to layer over tanks.

Best V-Neck Cashmere Sweater

9. Charter Club Cashmere V-Neck Sweater

What We Like

  • some colors available in petite sizing
  • tons of color options

What We Don't Like

  • thinner material
  • may pill easily

Charter Club

Complete with a chic V-neck for visual interest, this 100 percent cashmere sweater is what sartorial (and budget-friendly) dreams are made of. Although it’s made with a two-ply yarn for extra durability, this classic knit is described by reviewers as being “warm but lightweight,” making it perfectly poised for layering. Pack it in a carry-on to throw on while you travel or wear it over another top to keep you extra snuggly. Plus it comes in a wide range of colors, including both neutral tones and trendy brights, many of which also come in petite sizing. I’ll admit, this Charter Club classic isn’t as luxe or durable as say, the Jenni Kayne (mine got tiny holes within a few years), but it still feels very nice on your skin, comes in a ton of colors and makes for a great gift.

Best Short-Sleeve Cashmere Sweater

10. C by Bloomingdale's Short-Sleeve Cashmere Sweater

What We Like

  • short sleeves
  • great for layering
  • lots of color options

What We Don't Like

  • may run small
  • cut is too short for some

C by Bloomingdale's

I adore a short-sleeve or shell cashmere knit for comfort, style and all the temperature-regulating benefits of the luxurious knit without being totally overwhelmed by fabric. And this short-sleeve style fits right in with the current ‘90s minimalist revival. It has a ribbed trim at the neck and sleeves for added interest, and comes in a wide range of both neutrals and bolder colors (cherry red, delicate lilac, cerulean blue, etc.). The brand notes that the sweater is constructed from super fine, premium-quality Mongolian cashmere, and dozens of reviewers rave about the material’s soft, lightweight feel. Whether you pair it with a blazer or don it on its own, this piece is sure to keep you looking (and feeling) cool.

Best Cashmere Sweater for Layering

11. Everlane The Cashmere Classic Crew Sweater

What We Like

  • made partially of recycled cashmere
  • timeless silhouette

What We Don’t Like

  • not as warm as thicker knits

Everlane

One of the best things about cashmere is its breathability, meaning it will still be comfortable even in warmer temperatures come spring. This Everlane design has a super-classic cut—crew neck, straight torso, long sleeves—but is made of a lightweight weave that is ideal for layering and changing seasons. Reviewers say they’ve experienced minimal pilling, even after multiple years of wear, and that the fit is true to size with just enough wiggle room to feel comfy without appearing baggy. Per one 5-star reviewer, “I think I have finally found the perfect simple sweater for me. The cut is simple and sleek, with a slim sleeve that is easy to wear under a jacket. The color is flattering and the cashmere soft.”

12. Naked Cashmere Makena Longline Cashmere Cardigan

Naked Cashmere

Ideal for those days when you just wish you could wrap yourself in a cashmere throw and cozy up on the couch all afternoon, this longline cardigan gives you the same comfy vibes even while you’re getting those errands done. It’s made of 100 percent cashmere in 5-gauge knit with an open front and two deep pockets. The cut is designed for an oversize fit, so if you’re petite or want something a bit more fitted, I highly suggest going down one from your usual size. Otherwise, reviewers say this coatigan (coat + cardigan) is an absolute dream and wonderfully elegant.

13. Garnet Hill Ida Cashmere Cardigan

What We Like

  • unique texture
  • has pockets

What We Don't Like

  • might be too cropped for cold weather

Garnet Hill

If you’re a pocket girlie (who isn’t?), you’ll get *tons* of use out of this practical cashmere cardi. “Lately I find myself gravitating towards our Ida cashmere cardigan for its sumptuous hand feel, clean lines and softly tailored styling,” says Fortin, adding that it’s a timeless essential that “takes you from day to night, weekday to weekend and from the comfort of home to the next travel destination.” Contrast pointelle stitching and ribbed textures make it unique enough to rock as your statement piece while hip pockets make it functional enough for everyday wear. You can’t go wrong with any of its eight stunning colorways, be it hawthorn rose, Dijon or deep forest heather.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Highest Grade of Cashmere??

“Not all cashmere is created equally,” says Fortin. She explains cashmere fibers are typically separated into three grades of quality based on their fineness: A, B and C. Grade A typically consists of the finest and softest fibers, while grade B and C have progressively thicker and less soft fibers, she says. Tan says the grading system “refers to the microns of width per hair, and the less microns of width per hair, the better and softer the quality.”

Both experts agree that geography plays an integral role in the quality of the cashmere—materials sourced from areas with higher temperatures tend to yield finer cashmere, according to Fortin, while Tan says goats located in colder regions tend to produce finer and denser hair, while “their limited quantities make cashmere an exclusive and expensive material.”

Why Is Cashmere So Pricey?

Why does cashmere tend to err on the pricey side? Well, you’ve got Mother Nature, as well as supply and demand, to thank for that. Fortin says that because cashmere fibers are derived from the goat’s soft inner coat, which makes up a smaller percentage of their fleece—as opposed to their coarse outer coat—you’re left with limited availability and a higher price tag. She adds that “it’s difficult to separate the fine and coarse hairs, so cashmere is usually harvested gently by hand with a comb once a year when the goats naturally start to shed their soft undercoats. The entire cashmere process requires skilled labor, careful handling and attention to detail. Ethical practices, stringent quality control measures and the association with luxury in the fashion industry also play a role in the cost of cashmere.”

How Should You Wash a Cashmere Sweater?

If you’ve spilled your PSL all over your new cashmere sweater, not to worry—cleaning it *is* possible. Fortin says you should start by filling a basin with cool water and add a small amount of a gentle shampoo or a specially formulated cleanser to the water. Then, she says to place your cashmere in the soapy water and let it soak for a short period. Next, gently agitate the water without rubbing or wringing the sweater, and rinse the sweater with clean water. To remove any excess water, gently press the sweater without twisting it to maintain its fibers. To allow it to maintain its shape and durability, Tan recommends always air drying.

If you’re only looking to spot clean, Tan suggests occasionally using sweater spray in between washes (after all, she says that you should aim to wear your cashmere between five and six times in between washes). “Just lightly spray and leave your sweater out for a bit before putting it away,” she says. “Pilling is inevitable with all wool and cashmere, but it can be easily removed with gentle strokes of a cashmere comb.”

Fortin adds, “When in doubt, you can always dry clean, but handwashing is typically the gentler approach on your cashmere and your wallet.”

How Should You Store a Cashmere Sweater?

While I wish we could wrap myself in cashmere year-round, it’s mostly a cold-weather treat, meaning most of us will need to store our cozy cashmere knits during spring or summer months. To do so, Tan recommends storing your cashmere sweaters in a cool, dark place away from moisture and dust. “We recommend folding your cashmere in drawers or your wardrobe versus hanging it in a closet,” she says. “For long-term storage, clean or steam your cashmere and fold it neatly in a storage container.” Fortin recommends the likes of a cotton storage bag to shield it from dust and to promote air circulation, and she always stores them with a bit of lavender or cedar as a natural pest-repellent.
