If you’re from NYC, you know sneaker culture is nothing to play with—and finding comfortable shoes is just as important. For the longest time, I favored comfort over cool colors and designs. There was simply no way you could pull me away from my Hoka sneakers, which I’ve worn everywhere—from London to California. But I was ready to find a pair that worked well with jeans or a dress without looking like I was prepping for a marathon.

I was very familiar with Dr. Scholls, remembering their iconic displays at my local pharmacy—and the Time Off Win Lace sneakers are definitely not your grandma’s tennis shoes. The style has been going viral for being stylish *and* comfortable, while also being a more affordable alternative to PUMA or Adidas. So I decided to test them everywhere—from NYC to Atlanta—to see if they are just as comfortable and cool as people are saying.

My Biggest Draw Is the Style

Dr. Scholl's

Although I usually go for Nike Dunks and Hokas, suede sneakers are having a moment right now and this pair fits the bill. It’s made of recycled nylon, faux leather and microfiber that’s crafted from recycled plastic bottles. They come in 13 colors, but I gravitated toward the ‘Red Cherry’ pair, a muted shade that works with any outfit. It has retro-inspired stitching, featuring chevron accent and a low-top appearance that reminded me of my obsession with Vans back in my college days.

According to the brand, they’re treated with Easy Clean Repellant, a topical spray that keeps the soles cleaner for a longer period of time. I’ve been rocking them for a couple of weeks and I still haven’t noticed any scruffs or scratches—though they do have some dirt from all the traveling I’ve done.

They’re Comfortable Enough for Folks Who Walk a Lot

Dr. Scholl's

Despite wearing ‘em all the time—from 10,000 steps in Atlanta (and spending hours at the Georgia Aquarium) to attending the first Jonas Brothers Convention at the American Dream Mall (no, I’m not kidding), my feet were never swollen or in pain. I’ve had sneakers in the past with gum soles that just didn’t provide enough support or traction to handle dips, hills and wet paths. It’s a big reason why I look for thicker platforms and cushiony insoles if I’m doing long walks. I was pleasantly surprised that a pair of dubbed tennis shoes actually worked wonders in exploring a new city or strolling through a mall for hours for a boy band.

The secret is in the insoles. They are designed with the brand’s signature technology, which promises great cushioning, arch support *and* are molded to move with your feet, not against them. They also have a 1 ⅓ inch platform and 15 percent plant-based foam insoles—enough to spend hours on my feet sans any blisters, painful heels or any discomfort. The soles are also anti-microbial and anti-odor, so no stinky dogs at the end of the day.

The Bottom Line: Dr. Scholl’s Are Cool, OK

What We Like

  • comfortable fit
  • true to size
  • extensive color range
  • great for walking
  • nice arch support

What We Don't Like

  • not great for wide feet
  • can look a bit beat up after a while

Dr. Scholl's

Listen, Dr. Scholl’s is not only about orthotic inserts and foot creams. This viral pair definitely changed my perception of the brand and these sneakers have truly become my favorite pair to rock for long walks, brunches, you name it. If I did have to zero in on one con, they are not great for wider feet, but they do run true to size. I wore an 8 and it was a comfortable fit. One more thing: They are $70, which is $30 less than many other popular sneaks out there. I won’t be surprised if I add another pair to my collection. Overall, it’s a great walking shoe and a casual option that is equally supportive and ultra-stylish.
