As someone who is 5’0, busty *and* curvy, I’ve often limited myself to wearing specific items—or being completely lost on what works well for my body type. I’ve always wanted some guidance from a personal stylist and jumped at the opportunity for professional advice. During my session, there were a few tips I learned like wearing pointed-toe shoes to elongate my height and trying out vertical necklines to complement my torso (and the girls), but there was one thing that surprised me and left me changing the way I dressed. The magic of a belt

Now, I have a confession to make: I haven’t worn a belt since high school. I wore them for the obvious reason of keeping my pants from slipping, but also sported colorful belts to match my skinny jeans (oh, the 2010s was a time). But as I got older, I didn’t really think much of them nor needed it to hold me up. But when personal stylist Samantha Dawn added a belt to my outfit I didn’t mind it. She also left me with helpful tips to make the most out of this accessory, especially when it comes to being a curvy petite woman.

1. A Belt Can Keep Things Proportional

According to Dawn, I have an inverted triangle shape, which means wearing a thin belt in the middle of my waist (or if I’m wearing jeans) can balance and create the illusion of a taller figure. “Thinner belts will be better for your body type and petites in general just so you can have that waist definition and shape,” she said.

2. Be Strategic With a Thicker Belt

While a thinner belt is preferred, I can still sport a thicker belt depending on the outfit. Dawn suggests adding more volume on the bottom versus the top to prevent the size of the belt from shortening my torso even more. She explains, “If you’re wearing wide-leg pants and an oversized blazer, you’re going to look very square or rectangular. You have volume, volume and volume,” she explains. “The belt is giving you waist definition, but maybe you’ll want to try for a thinner belt in that case to balance out proportions and not take away from your torso.”

3. Belt Layering Is the New Wave

I wasn’t completely sold on this tip until Dawn finessed two belts on her waist during our follow-up call. Belt layering is surging in popularity and it’s quite simple. All you have to do is place two belts on top of each other in slightly different directions to add dimension. Dawn told me to just have fun and even add a chain belt for an edgy flair to my looks. “When you’re layering belts, mix textures in different directions. You want it to be messy for an effortless done look,” she says. “When you mix it up intentionally it’s fun.”

4. The Tail of the Belt Can Be Adjusted

If the belt is too long and looks awkward, Dawn has two easy hacks for petites: use fashion tape or you can take it from the bottom, tuck it in and create a nice loop. “I always put it towards the thigh, not towards the middle [for a stylish finish],” she adds.

In conclusion, I’m not intimidated to wear a belt again. As Dawn shared with me, a belt can spark creativity and be a helpful accessory for us petites. While most of the time it can be a necessity, it can also be an opportunity to experiment with my style. “A belt is an easy way to explore different textures and colors, especially if you’re not ready to do your clothes just yet. People are used to dressing real simple and they want to branch out, but can commit to buying a piece just yet, a belt is a very fun way to express that,” she explained.
