A few weeks ago, I saw a viral post on X by user @lyhyolanda that read, “There are a lot of people in New York wearing some variation of a cute little top + big wide jorts + some type of combined ballet flat / sneaker abomination.” While it’s true that I’m a New Yorker newly based in Los Angeles, I looked down at my fit. Cute little top. Big wide jorts. If my Mary Jane sneakers weren’t still packed away in one of the cardboard boxes in my guest room, I’d have probably been wearing those, too.

There’s no denying that the past couple of summers have seen a resurgence of long, baggy bottoms that are at once both Adam Sandler-esque and model off-duty. When I brought them up in a pitch meeting with my fellow editors this past spring, audible groans filled the room. We all agreed that they were controversial—and not exactly flattering—but as I proudly declared then, I will proudly declare now: I love my jorts!

I’ll admit that it took me a while to warm up to them, especially as a short gal who typically tries to lengthen my legs by way of shorter hemlines. But after working on a story to prove that Bermuda shorts (denim or otherwise) could actually look chic on petites, I was hooked.

Let’s start with the obvious reasons: They’re comfortable, they’re effortless, they’re cool. As PureWow contributor Jordan Rossman recently demonstrated, they can be styled with even the most basic tees and button-downs and still feel fashion-forward. As for their loose fit? I’m of the opinion that it’s a feature, not a bug. I can spend the whole day out and about and not once tug at my waistband or feel like circulation was being cut off to my legs.

Aesthetically, there’s something appealing about challenging norms and—yes, I’m gonna say it—rejecting the male gaze by way of their exaggerated silhouette. The style’s increased popularity may very well be a response to the micro-mini trend of a few years ago; the fashion zeitgeist’s way of saying, sorry, there’ll be no more cheeky peeks here, folks. Plus, as any stylist will tell you, playing with proportion is one of the keys to nailing a standout look. (Hence the frequent pairing of baggy jorts with “cute little tops.”)

Ease, versatility and aesthetics aside, I also really just like the emphasis jorts put on my calves. Paired with some kitten heels, I find that my favorite jorts manage to make the lower half of my legs look longer and sleeker. It’s all about finding the right length (which, for me, I’d say is right at or just above the knee).

No, jorts aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. But when I don’t want to think twice about putting together a look that’s comfy with a sense of cool, I, for one, will take a steaming hot cup of ‘em.
