Have we reached peak ‘90s nostalgia yet? That’s the question I find myself asking whenever yet another trend comes around to snap me right back to my childhood. But, of course, fashion is cyclical, and even the most niche, throwback styles end up making a comeback eventually. And for the past few summers—as well as the one upon us—that includes a shoe that nearly every millennial remembers wearing at the pool and on the playground growing up: the jelly.

The clear, plasticky style that was all the rage (*gulp*) three to four decades ago picked up steam again in 2024, then again in 2025, and, indeed, is holding its ground for summer 2026. From the familiar fisherman sandals to flats and mules with a more mesh-like design (no doubt inspired by The Row’s Mara flats), jelly shoes are everywhere this season. And admittedly, they’re really cute—even for us grownups.

Alas, I know what you’re thinking: I can already feel the blisters forming and the sweat trapped on the bottom of my feet. But for their second (er, fourth?) act, jellies have finally evolved toward comfort. While we can’t speak to every style out there, two of my fellow PureWow editors and I can recommend at least four pairs that we’ve stepped out in ourselves, which didn’t leave us with the raw, chafed feet of our jelly-wearing youths. So if you’ve been admiring the returning trend from afar but were too traumatized to actually invest in a pair, consider these vetted-to-be-pain-free picks below.

I’ve seen quite a few iterations of these netted jelly mules on the market, and while Vince’s version is on the pricier side, I’m a firm believer that you get what you pay for—especially in the shoe department. The very first time I wore the Barcelonas were for a full day at the office, including the buses, trains and roughly 10,000 steps it takes to get to and fro. Was I shocked that I experienced nary a chafe—let alone a single blister? Somewhat, but I had high expectations as soon as I felt how soft and flexible the caged, rubbery upper was (which, thanks to the open design, also doesn’t trap heat or cause my toes to sweat). This is no stiff plastic like the jellies I wore in kindergarten. Even the soles of my feet were singing that first day thanks to the shoes’ smooth leather footbed, which is surprisingly supportive despite being totally flat.

Ever since then, I’ve been slipping on these beauties almost every time I leave the house. Not only because they’re so comfortable, but also because I feel so, so chic in them—particularly in this elevated Ganache color, a rich chocolate brown. (The style does come in eight other colorways, including a blue, pink and two earthy greens.)

Now this silhouette may be the one you think of when you think “jelly shoes.” But take it from PureWow’s director of affiliate strategy, Pam Masin: “These sparkly fisherman sandals may look like the jellies you owned in the ‘80s and ‘90s, but they definitely don’t feel like ‘em. “I absolutely cannot get enough of these jelly slides,” she raves. “Not only are they comfortable, but the top adjustable strap (made from waterproof faux leather) is a practical touch that allows you to walk in them longer than your typical slide. The toe box is also wide enough that there isn't any blister friction.” Blessed be.

These don’t have a back strap, which takes one potential area of uncomfy rubbing out of the equation. (IDK about you, but I always get that little scab right on the back of my foot when I’m breaking in new shoes with a heel strap.) As for the “jelly” component of these jelly shoes, the upper is made from rubber rather than PVC, so it’s much more flexible and lightweight. “These come in so many cute colors,” Masin adds (eight, to be exact), “but I couldn't pass up the subtle glitter moment.”

While everyone else may have taken a step back from the jelly shoe game for a while, Melissa has been keeping them alive since 1979. In fact, many credit the Brazilian-born brand for inventing—and popularizing—the modern jelly shoes we all know and (sometimes) love today. When it comes to these funky lattice flats from the iconic label, it’s a definite “love” from Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay.

“You know those items you spot online and immediately have to buy sight unseen? Well, let's just say I'm glad these shoes fit true to size, because I was so in love I swiped right before I could read a single review. I'm not usually a trend follower—I've never owned jelly shoes or Mary Janes—but I adore these ballet flats,” says Yohay. “The rounded, dainty toe box is the perfect shape, flattering my wide feet thanks to its slender silhouette. The buckle strap is both stylish and functional, and thanks to the padded insole and open-air style, they are flexible, breathable and shockingly comfortable. There are a bunch of shades to choose from, but for me, the clear pink was a no-brainer. Plus, they smell like bubblegum (I kid you not!).” Personally, I would expect nothing less from the jelly OGs.

Flip-flops are already our go-tos for summer, but a jelly pair that can stand up to sand and water? Masin didn't need much convincing to add these to her beach-day rotation. "I initially bought these for the beach (as I love that they're waterproof and will be easy to wash sand off on the boardwalk), but I've been wearing them this spring because they are so cute," she tells me, confirming they're stylish enough to show off beyond the water.

The sleek, slip-on style is made from synthetic rubber with a contoured footbed for a touch of support. As Masin adds, "While I wouldn't walk miles in them, they're as comfortable as any other thong flip-flop I have in my closet." Other buyers note that they're flexible and lightweight, meaning they're perfect for throwing in a beach bag or packing in your carry-on. And it doesn't hurt that they're this affordable.
