The first time I saw Kiziks was at my toddler’s pick-up. A 3-year-old slid his foot into the sneakers with such ease that his mom had to explain to my gaping mouth what I’d just witnessed: Kiziks. The step-in shoes made getting dressed and leaving the house with a cranky 3-year-old a million times easier—no tying, no shoe-horning struggle. But who are we kidding? Putting on sneakers at any age can be a humiliating feat. Oh look! I bent over to tie my shoes and my fly zipped open after a big meal! And don’t get me started on lacing up gym shoes while nine months pregnant. The problem with most slip-ons is that the more slippy on-y they are, the less supportive they tend to be. My pair of Kiziks Monaco sneakers changed that. And no, they don’t look like toddler shoes. Here’s my review.

Testing the Kizik Monaco Shoe

Kizik

My Kiziks arrived at the beginning of summer, which turned out to be just in time to chase a now-sprinting 18-month-old out the door. I have worn them consistently since they came, not always because they went with my outfit but because they were the only things I could get on my feet in time before the dog/toddler/4-year-old ran into the street. In other words: these shoes are lifesavers. Once the herd escapes from the house, it’s go go go. There’s no “let me swap these sandals for a pair of comfortable walking shoes” when my blind dog is stuck in a fence and my kids are mere feet from investigating a rat trap. So Kiziks became my morning shoe, which of course turned into my afternoon and all-day shoe—the easiest thing to truly step into with my hands full of bribes snacks and my brain fixed on impending danger.

The step-in feature holds up to the brand’s promise, but the support around the ankle and foot is so much more substantial than your typical slip-on (as well as my initial expectations!). This is probably because the brand’s whole shtick is their innovations that make the heel resilient enough to compress and spring back up so that the shoes feel “on” without bending over and lacing them. (That said, I do retie my shoes occasionally to tighten up since they loosen, but it’s not necessary with each wear.)

Also, unlike a sandal or even Crocs (and you know I love a Croc), these are adequate walking shoes. I’ve clocked 10K steps wearing ‘em, which is a big deal for my yams because I am constantly fighting over-pronated foot pain. Mama needs support, and these, despite being designed with step-in ease, are also supportive. With high-traction sole and super-soft, responsive foam, the Monacos are hands-down the get-out-the-door, walk-the-kids-to-school winner.

Bottom Line

Kiziks are the rare sneakers that actually live up to their promise—I can step in, sprint out and still have the support to keep up with my kids (and my dog) all day. They’ve officially graduated from “mom hack” to everyday essential.
