Much like hunting for a truly comfortable bra, finding a comfortable bathing suit can feel like striking gold or discovering the Holy Grail. It can make your beach vacation infinitely more fun, give you a major mood boost and all around make you feel like a superstar akin to the sexy lifeguards on Baywatch. Rather than struggle through the ordeal of ordering multiple suits from multiple brands to test them all out, I set out to do the heavy lifting for you by tracking down the most comfortable bathing suits on the internet...at least, according to PureWow editors. Here are the five best styles to shop (and wear) ASAP—just find the perfect sundress to slip over 'em and you're good to go.

How I Vetted the Most Comfortable Bathing Suits

All of the below swimsuits come recommended by PureWow editors who’ve worn them at the beach or pool (or both) numerous times and can attest to their lasting comfort. Of course, I also made sure to do a deep dive into reviews from others to corroborate their claims and found that these five bathing suits are indeed notably comfortable.

Most Comfortable Swimsuit Overall

1. Mimi Flamingo Harper One-Piece Swimsuit

What We Like

  • soft yet sculpting
  • removable cups
  • versatile look

What We Don't Like

  • only fits up to a D cup

Mimi Flamingo

Simple, sleek and versatile, this classic one-piece instantly won over Emily Brozyna, associate director of social strategy. "The Harper has been my most-worn swimsuit since I got it last summer," she tells me. "It’s incredibly comfortable to wear all day, and I don't feel the need to rip it off the second I can (unlike other tight suits I've had in the past). It's form-fitting and flattering, but doesn't feel restricting at all." For that, we can thank the soft, stretchy blend of recycled nylon and elastane, which is meant to have a second-skin feel.

Better yet, the square-neck, tank-style suit can take you far beyond the beach. As Brozyna adds, "I slip this on with a pair of linen pants, and it instantly looks like a complete outfit. It can easily pass as a tank or bodysuit, making it perfect for looking put-together when you want to hop from the beach to the store to a restaurant and back to the beach. I also have other suits that I love from this brand, and they're in constant rotation."

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: 4 to 16
  • Material: shell: 75% recycled nylon, 25% elastane; lining: 84% recycled nylon, 16% elastane
  • Care Instructions: hand wash

Most Comfortable Bathing Suit for Petites

2. Boden Mykonos Deep V Swimsuit

What We Like

  • good bum coverage
  • flattering ruched torso
  • available in long-torso sizing

What We Don’t Like

  • straps aren't adjustable
  • straps can get twisted

Boden

PureWow Editor-in-Chief Jillian Quint loves this Boden number so much, she penned a glowing review of it last summer. Not only is it a particularly flattering option for petites thanks to the V neckline and ruched, banded bodice, but it also delivers on the comfort front. "The Mykonos Deep V features everything the brand is known for: thick quality material, poppy colorways and a grownup sensibility that’s still plenty playful," Quint wrote. "I recently broke mine out for a trip to Mexico and am pleased to report that a) it got me all the compliments and b) I found it supportive enough to wear to midday water aerobics."

Whether you're swimming, sunning or getting your steps in underwater, you'll also appreciate that it offers what Quint notes is a "full tush that keeps everything in place," along with lightly padded, fixed cups that offer support without dramatically hoisting. As a bonus, this beauty comes in various solid hues, prints and color-blocked colorways, so there's something to fit everyone's taste.

  • Size Range: 0 to 20/22, Regular and Long Torso
  • Material: shell: 80% polyamide, 20% elastane; lining 85% polyester, 15% elastane

Most Comfortable Bathing Suit for Long Torso

3. Quince Italian Cami One-Piece Swimsuit

What We Like

  • long-torso sizing fits great
  • adjustable straps
  • good coverage

What We Don't Like

  • wish the bust was more supportive
  • hand wash only

Quince

For folks with longer torsos, finding a one-piece that doesn't pull on the wrong areas can be a challenge. Thankfully, this pick from Quince comes in long-torso sizing and has adjustable straps for the best fit. Just take it from Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay. "This is one swimsuit I could easily wear all day—it is so comfortable," she raves. "The bottom coverage is conservative but not matronly, and the seams stay put, giving me the freedom to chase after my toddler without fear of flashing everyone at the community pool. The material is soft and snug, and the long-torso cut only adds to the comfort. Finally a one-piece whose straps aren't digging into my shoulders, or worse, giving me a permanent wedgie."

Yohay adds that the fabric (which is meant to stand up to everything from snags to chlorine) is perfectly opaque, while the simple, scoop-neck design ensures that it'll never go out of style. Overall, she considers it a win—and more than 500 Quince reviewers agree.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: XS to XL, Regular and Long Torso
  • Material: body: 78% recycled polyamide, 22% spandex; liner: 90% recycled polyamide, 10% spandex
  • Care Instructions: hand wash, line dry or dry clean

Most Comfortable Bikini

4. Hunza G Nadine Bikini Set

What We Like

  • soft, stretchy fabric
  • high-waist coverage
  • easy care

What We Don't Like

  • not adjustable
  • pricey

Hunza G

Multiple PureWow editors recommended this sustainability-focused swimwear brand that’s also loved by celebs like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Hailey Bieber and Kim Kardashian. And while I'm skeptical of items that come in just one size, PureWow-ers with a range of body types have all raved about Hunza G’s famously stretchy material, making this high-waist two-piece from the brand a total must.

"After having two kids, my standards for swimsuits have completely changed," says Deena Campbell, PureWow's fashion and beauty director-at-large. "If it’s not comfortable, supportive and forgiving in all the right places, I’m not interested. But the Hunza G Nadine bikini is one of the few suits I actually look forward to putting on. The secret is in the signature crinkled fabric. It stretches, hugs and adapts to my body without digging in or feeling restrictive." Magic? Maybe. And it's certainly worth the splurge to experience it for yourself.

Most Comfortable Bathing Suit for Big Boobs

5. J.Crew Ruched Plunge One-Piece Swimsuit

What We Like

  • comfortable bust support
  • silky soft fabric
  • ruched design

What We Don’t Like

  • neckline may be too low for some tastes
  • low stock

J.Crew

As someone with a D-cup bust, I don't always want a swimsuit that va-va-vooms the gals up to my collarbone. Sure, a good lift is nice, but so is easy, comfortable support. Enter: this J.Crew classic. There's no denying that the plunge neckline shows off plenty of cleavage, but due to the shape and light padding of the cups, they gently hug and hold—offering coverage without intense compression. I've worn this pick to the pool, the beach and the spa and I have never felt constricted in the chest—or anywhere else for that matter.

From the boobs down, the one-piece is equally as comfortable and forgiving. After having it in my rotation for three years, I'm still blown away by the silky-smoothness of the material, and just as in love with the ruched design that holds in my tummy (and camouflages any lumps and bumps) without restricting my ability to exhale. Bonus points for the retro cut that totally gives off Marilyn Monroe vibes.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: XXS to 3X
  • Material: 80% polyamide, 20% elastane.
  • Care Instructions: machine-washable

Frequently Asked Questions

What Style Bathing Suit Is Best for a Belly?

Those who want to cover their belly area might what to opt for a one-piece with some ruching in the center, which adds flattering details that distract from any lumps and bumps. The same effect can be achieved with high-waisted bottoms and a longer tankini top for added coverage.

Should You Size Up or Down in Swimsuits?

Sizing up and down in a suimsuit depends on the the type and how long your torso is. If you're between sizes in a one-piece and have a large bust or long torso, you can try sizing up to ensure it will fit your body without the need for constant tugging. Those with a shorter torso or smaller busts might want to size down. For bikinis that might stretch over time, sizing down is a good option, so you won't have to worry about it slipping down in the future.

What Is the Best Swimsuit Material for Sensitive Skin?

Polyester and nylon are two fabrics that can be irritating for sensitive skin, but are unfortunately found in many bathing suits. Fortunately, there are some more hypoallergenic swimsuit options out there made of organic fabrics like cotton, hemp or bamboo, just note that you may lose a little stretch opting for these fabrics. Also, washing your bathing suit with hypoallergenic soap before you wear it may help reduce irritation, according to the National Eczema Association.
