If you’re anything like me, you let bra shopping fall by the wayside. I’m never sure what size I am. The pretty stuff looks fun but uncomfortable. The comfortable stuff looks like it doesn’t know how to have any fun. Underwire supposedly has better support. But who wants to have something digging into their skin for eight-plus hours a day? Bralettes feel like the ultimate lounge piece, but will they actually support a 40DDD? At the end of the day, all I want is the most comfortable bra I can possibly find, that works with my wardrobe and makes me feel cute. A tall order, perhaps, but as me and my fellow PureWow editors can confirm, not an impossible one.

Below, I’ve compiled a list of editor-tested and -approved bras that perform when it comes to comfort, support and style. We’ve worn these bras for years, in all seasons and with all manner of clothing, from plunging summer dresses to winter sweaters. They’ve survived the washing machine and lived to tell the tale. And with that, our seven most comfortable bras for every season and occasion.

How We Tested Comfortable Bras

When it comes to finding the most comfortable bra, I—and my fellow editors—have a few non-negotiables. Here’s what we considered:

  • Style: I’m not talking about the color or fabric here. I’m looking at the overall bra design, like finding one with underwire that doesn’t dig into my ribs or straps that don’t leave angry red (and sore) indents on my shoulders. Or, heaven forbid, give me eczema. (True story after a really hot summer day wearing a strapless bra.) I prioritized wider straps and bands, less silicone lining that was prone to irritate my skin and cuts that felt supportive, while still working with a variety of clothing.
  • Size: I polled editors with a wide range of band and cup sizes and made sure to include options that accommodated different body types.
  • Material: Fabric will dictate how soft and comfy a bra feels on your skin. My priority was finding bras that felt so soft and lightweight that we forgot we were wearing one. Big yes to less clasps and stretchier fabric (that still bounced back).

All the bras on this list have been worn and washed by editors for at least a year. We’ve considered dozens of brands before landing on these seven we think live up to their promises.

Most Comfortable Everyday Bra

1. Soma Unlined Perfect Vanishing Bra

What We Like

  • lightweight and breathable
  • Sizing up to 44H
  • disappears under clothing

What We Don't Like

  • clasps could be a tad more snug

Soma

I’ve had this bra for a couple of years and it’s the one I reach for most consistently. Multiple PureWow editors did rigorous testing to see if the bra lived up to its claims of “vanishing.” The verdict was glowing praise. Under my lightest blouses, whitest shirts and most form-fitting sweaters, this unlined bra is invisible. Despite the fact that, yes, it does have an underwire, it’s also incredibly comfortable. I find it to be the least sweaty and most weightless bra I own. If I must wear a bra in the summer, this is it. Thankfully, it’s also held up beautifully in the washing machine (I wash on cold, air-dry), and doesn’t look worse for wear after barely leaving my body for the last two years. Better yet, the material is so soft, sometimes I forget I’m even wearing a bra.

Most Comfortable Underwire-Free Bra

2. Evelyn & Bobbie Bobbie Scoop Bra

What We Like

  • wire-free
  • moisture-wicking fabric
  • inclusive sizing supports up to 20lbs of breast tissue

What We Don't Like

  • some buyers report that band can ride up/roll

Evelyn & Bobbie

PureWow Fashion and Beauty Director-at-Large Deena Campbell loves Evelyn & Bobbie’s Bobbie scoop bra, which offers a lower scoop neck and thinner straps than the brand’s other designs. Evelyn & Bobbie’s chief selling points are the bra’s smoothing capabilities, wire-free cups and four-way stretch fabric that’s meant to mold to your body for a custom fit after just three wears. Campbell won’t touch an underwire bra and turns to the Bobbie scoop regularly.

“I have small-ish boobs, so I don’t need a ton of support,” she says. “The Evelyn & Bobbie Bobbie Scoop Bra gives me a naturally lifted shape without any poking or digging, to the point where I genuinely forget I’m wearing it. The moisture-wicking fabric is another big plus, especially on days when I’m squeezing in a run (or just sweating through a New York summer), and the ergonomic design evenly distributes weight to help reduce shoulder and neck pain.”

Most Comfortable Bra for Petites

3. ThirdLove 24/7 Classic Uplift Plunge Bra

What We Like

  • removable padding for custom fit
  • mesh detailing
  • great for petites

What We Don't Like

  • some buyers report that they experienced gaping in the cups

ThirdLove

Senior Director Rachel Bowie originally bought this bra for summer fashion, but found it quickly became a year-round staple for everything from V-neck T-shirts to dresses with lower necklines.

“It's super comfortable and fits like a dream, but I especially love that it's designed with petite frames in mind (I'm 5'2"),” she says. “It also comes with removable pads for customizable cleavage (woot!) and half-cup sizes that offer plenty of support. The cherry on top of all that is that this bra is pretty. I love the sheer detailing at the top that makes me feel like I put effort into my undergarments while still serving as an everyday bra.”

Most Comfortable Bra for New Moms

4. Embrace Lounge Bra

What We Like

  • great pick for new moms post-nursing
  • ultra-soft, breathable fabric

What We Don't Like

  • some buyers say that sizing can be inconsistent

Embrace

PureWow Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay owns Embrace’s Lounge bra in almost every color. She first discovered the brand while pregnant with her son—"the nursing bras are hands down my favorite"—and now lives in this non-maternity style. The fabric is Austrian micromodal, a plant-based fabric sourced from Austrian beech trees. That’s really just a fancy way of saying the material is incredibly breathable and, per the brand, three times softer than cotton.

“Thanks to its support and versatility, it's easily taken over my bra drawer,” Yohay says. “The comfort is unparalleled. The material is extremely soft, breathable and cushioned—you're bound to forget you're wearing it.”

Most Comfortable Bralette Hybrid

5. Aerie Superchill Bra

What We Like

  • bralette feel, bra support
  • provides definition and shape

What We Don't Like

  • some buyers report inconsistent sizing/loss of shape

Aerie

For those who like the informality of a bralette but the support of a traditional underwire bra, PureWow Director of Affiliate Strategy Pam Masin recommends Aerie’s Superchill wireless bra. “This Aerie bra falls somewhere between a traditional underwire and bralette. It's wireless, but it gives plenty of definition and support, especially compared to an unlined bralette,” she reports. “It has traditional bra elements like adjustable straps and hook-and-eye loops in the back that help it achieve a just-right fit.”

Masin adds that the band resists rolling up and "is so smooth under clothing." The biggest difference between this hybrid design and a traditional bra, she says, is that Aerie's has traditional cups without the underwire. "This makes it way more supportive than your average wireless bra, which usually doesn't have well-defined cups. It also provides a little more shape under your clothing, which is a plus if your chest is smaller."

Most Comfortable Strapless Bra

6. Floatley Bandeau Bra

What We Like

  • doesn't require silicone to feel secure
  • fabric is gentle on skin
  • light padding gives shape

What We Don't Like

  • no clasps so must go over head

Floatley

If I think back on the softest bra I’ve ever owned, Floatley would be up there. Buttery is the only way to describe the fabric. The bandeau bra is a newer addition to the line, and I was initially skeptical. I haven't worn a strapless bra in years; the last one I had gave me eczema after I wore it for too long on a humid summer day. My skin was red for a week, and so I said, never again. Floatley's bandeau, however, has changed my tune. It has the supple fabric the brand is known for, and lightly padded cups that lend shape. Importantly, there are no silicone grippy strips to dig into and pull at my skin. Instead, Floatley's seamless design uses reinforced brushed bands to keep the girls up. While the pressure from the bra did leave indents in my skin, it wasn't irritated—a huge win.

Prettiest Comfortable Bra

7. Natori Feathers Plunge Bra

What We Like

  • soft, comfortable material
  • fits both small and big boobs

What We Don't Like

  • lace can peek out
  • pricey

Natori

Turns out, you don't have to trade pretty embellishments for comfort. At least not when it comes to the PureWow reader- (and editor-) loved Natori Feathers bra. Contributing Commerce Editor Stephanie Meraz was instantly won over by this lace-trimmed beauty's smooth contour pads, soft fabric and flattering fit.

"Between the soft feel of the fabric to the thin, lightweight padding that felt so malleable and non-suffocating on my skin, I almost forgot that I was even wearing a bra," she wrote in a review. "The lace band felt supple and breathable against my chest and ribcage, like a gentle hug that never dug in or caused my skin to spill over. The demi contour and deep plunge created a flattering shape and natural lift that looked great with my V-neck blouses and dresses." Although she does note that the lace may peek through the straps of some tank tops, Meraz has declared it the most comfortable bra she owns. (PSA: The brand notes that the style runs small, so you may want to try sizing up a cup.)

What to Look for in a Comfortable Bra

The key word here is comfortable. At the end of the day, you don’t want to deal with shoulder pains or back aches because you wore an ill-fitting bra. To ensure you get the right fit, here are some tips to get you started.

  • Adjust the straps. You want the bra band to be leveled in the front and back. If the band is too low, tighten the straps. If the band is too high, loosen the bra straps.
  • Look in the mirror. Your breasts should sit halfway between your shoulders and elbows. To gauge this, look at yourself in the mirror sideways. If they’re sitting too low, you might need more cup support.
  • Put a shirt on. Grab a tight tank and look for any spillage in the cup area. If your breasts are pouring out, you should consider going up a cup size. If there are any gaps, you might want to size down.
  • Check out the underwire placement. The underwire and center of the bra should lay flat against the breastbone. It shouldn’t dig into the skin or have any gaps.
  • No loose hooks. If your closures appear loose or stretched out, it might be time to say adios to your bra. To make your bras last longer, always use the outermost hook to start, as your bra will stretch and loosen on its own over time.

How to Determine Your Bra Size

Did you know that about 80 percent of people are actually wearing the wrong bra size? Yup, while we all wish that every bra had the same fit, the truth is not all brands are universal. One bra might fit you just right, but another can be off (even if they’re both the same exact size). For example, one PureWow editor found that a Victoria's Secret bra fit best for her when she sized up versus an Aerie bra that needed to be sized down.

It may feel like a losing battle, but we found two ways to help you find the right fit. First, consider your sister sizes (aka alternatives that offer the same volume). As mentioned, every brand is different but if you have your regular size and two other sizes (that are lower and higher than your usual) then you’re in good shape.

Another helpful idea is to measure yourself again. It’s probably been a while since you assessed your bra size, so try doing it right at home with four easy steps

  • Measure your band. Use a measuring tape and wrap it around your rib cage (just below your breasts). Note: Pick the nearest even number in inches, and if you’re between inches go for the larger number.
  • Measure around your bust. You’ll want to start at the fullest point of your breasts, which can fall right over your nipples. Again, pick the nearest even number in inches.
  • Subtract your band and bust measurement. This number will be your cup size. For example, if your band measurement is 34 and your bust measurement is 42, then your cup size will be 8. Once you figure out the cup size, it’ll correspond with the letter from the chart above (i.e., 1 for A cup to 10 for J cup).
  • Finally, combine the band measurement with your new cup size. This combination will be your bra size: 34C, 40DD, etc.
