If we’re going to sport sneakers just about everywhere we go, why not invest in the most comfortable sneakers money can buy? After all, we wear them to runto the gym, to travel, to walk around town, heck some even wear them on their wedding day. I did a deep dive, reading tons and tons of reviews and polling friends and family of the PureWow edit team to pin down the walking, running and slip-on sneakers that are best for all-day use, no matter what you’ve got planned.

As board-certified podiatrist Dr. Anne Sharkey, DPM, explains, the most important thing when searching for comfortable shoes is the fit. And the best way to know what shoes will feel comfy from dawn ‘til dusk? Trying them on at the end of the day. This is by far the easiest way to quickly notice whether that promised arch support is truly living up to the hype.

From super-trendy Adidas Sambas (yes, they do live up to the hype) to your dad’s favorite New Balance 990s and plenty of chic everyday options (hello, Cariuma), these are the sneakers you can depend on to see you through your daily routine in comfort and style. Here, 16 superstar sneaks that are sure to keep your feet feeling comfortable for hours on end, researched and reviewed by your favorite shoe-obsessed editors.

Meet the Expert

Dr. Anne Sharkey, DPM, is a board-certified podiatrist based in Austin, TX, with more than 20 years of experience. She received a doctorate of podiatric medicine from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

How We Tested the Most Comfortable Sneakers

All of the sneakers on this list were either directly recommended by PureWow editors, friends or family, or are made by brands that work closely with podiatrists to ensure their shoes are comfortable and supportive. Editor testers made sure to wear their sneakers multiple times (some even for a few months straight) to ensure that comfort lasted well beyond the first wear. We also made sure to pay specific attention to how these sneakers held up doing whatever activity it is they’re specifically designed for, be it walking, running, lifting or standing.

To complement our first-person testing, I scoured reviews on multiple sites for each shoe, watched YouTube videos and read up on what the experts at shoe-focused publications had to say. Because the truth is, not every shoe works for every foot, but among the 16 stunners on this list, I feel pretty confident you’ll find at least one pair—or hopefully more—of comfortable sneakers to add to your wardrobe.

The Absolute Most Comfortable Heels for Weddings, Brunches and Everything in Between

Best Classic Everyday Sneaker

1. Birkenstock Bend Low Sneakers

What We Like

  • classic look
  • multiple width options
  • cork footbed

What We Don’t Like

  • rubber outsole reportedly wears down quickly

Birkenstock

SEO Editor Marissa Wu will readily admit she’s not a fan of casual sneakers—that is, until she tried this Birkenstock pair. “I’ll literally never wear another sneaker,” she says. What is it that makes them such a stellar pick? For starters, they have a very roomy toe box and super-comfortable cork footbed. “This is the widest toe box I’ve ever seen by far,” explains Wu, “mimicking the sandal design, and after walking at least 20 miles in these shoes, I can still report that I haven’t had any chafing or blisters on my toes or bunions. Neither have my arches spilled ungracefully over the sides of the shoes.” As with the brand’s sandals, sizing can sometimes be a bit tricky, but Wu says the size chart was incredibly helpful and landed her with her best size on the first attempt. All in all, these sneakers (which also come in a range of chic solid hues) are a spectacular choice for an every shoe that will go with just about everything in your wardrobe.

What We Like

  • machine washable
  • lots of fun color options

What We Don’t Like

  • those with wide feet may find the toe box small

Rothy's

Ever since launching in 2016, Rothy’s has made a name for itself with its ridiculously comfy shoes you don’t have to be precious with. Even Meghan Markle is a fan of the brand’s OG flats. “I am consistently impressed with Rothy’s shoes, both for the comfort level and ease of care,” says Director of Special Projects and Royals, Rachel Bowie. “I’ve had multiple pairs of shoes, flats and sneakers, for a few years now and they still look brand new.” The knit uppers, made from recycled water bottles, are particularly notable for their comfort right out of the box, so you don’t have to worry about blisters or skin irritation. They’re also incredibly breathable and can be tossed in the wash once you remove the midsole (though Rothy’s recommends skipping the dryer), a bonus for those who don’t want to bother with socks. Wu is also a fan of these easy slip-on kicks. “They’re easy to pair with lots of outfits, washable, made of recycled plastic and have a sturdy footbed, which is essential for my flat feet,” she explains. “I’d say they run a little narrow but the material is super flexible so for me it’s a good compromise between style and comfort”

Best Sneaker for City Walking

  • great for everyday use
  • shock-absorbing EVA midsole
  • inner lining is wonderfully soft

What We Don’t Like

  • only go up to a size 11
  • few color options

Reebok

Multiple New Yorkers listed these Reebok sneakers as their favorite casual shoe for strolling around the city, including former Senior Food Editor Katherine Gillen, though some did admit that if you deal with ample foot issues (like bunions or plantar fasciitis) then you might be happier opting for a pair with more aggressive support. “I love the Reebok Club C because they are durable yet surprisingly soft and comfy on first wear, probably thanks to a combination of a leather upper and terry-lined foamy inside,” Gillen explains. “Walking is basically my number one mode of transportation, and these have held up to the grime of a big city without giving me any blisters along the way.” Although they may look simple, like Keds or Vans, these Reebok sneakers have a much thicker, more supportive sole, including an EVA midsole to help with shock absorption—a must when strutting down concrete sidewalks. The inside of the heel also has a little extra cushion to prevent irritation there. And while the terry cloth inner lining technically doesn’t offer anything by way of support, it does feel incredibly comfortable and soft on your feet (with or without socks) as an added bonus.

4. Cariuma Salvas Leather Sneakers

What We Like

  • with every pair of sneakers purchased, the brand plants two trees in the Brazilian rainforest
  • no break-in period required

What We Don’t Like

  • reportedly run a half size small
  • only available in white with colorful accents

Cariuma

Cariuma has long been a PureWow favorite for stylish, sustainable footwear that is both comfortable and cute. But the Salvas stand out thanks to their truly timeless design and the fact that they require zero break-in time. Seriously, the top of the sneaker is so supple and soft, former Director of Branded Content Rachel Gulmi (and many others) found she could just slip these beauties on and go without worrying at all about irritation on the back of her heel. Former Associate Fashion Commerce Editor Stephanie Meraz agrees. “Almost a year later, and my Cariuma Salvas are still my favorite go-to everyday sneaker,” she notes. (You can read her full review here.) “They’ve held up so well, only getting more comfortable and stretchy as time goes by. For instance, I can now step into them instead of having to untie and tie them over and over again. And I’ve got to say, I’m pleasantly surprised to report that they’ve stay pretty true to their original white hue. Of course, there are a few scuff marks here and there, but they don’t look gray by any means.”

5. Seavees Cardinal Sneakers

What We Like

  • great for everyday wear
  • padded collar
  • timeless design

What We Don’t Like

  • few color options

Seavees

Associate Commerce Editor Natalie LaBarbera is obsessed with these chic, everyday shoes. So much so that she owns multiple pairs. “I feel like I'm never not raving over Seavees,” LaBarbera admits, “but I'm truly obsessed with the Cardinal sneakers. I have two different color combos and wear them each multiple times a week. I love that they're stylish enough to wear with everyday clothes but I can also easily go for walks with my dog wearing them because they’re so comfy thanks to the padding at the ankles and memory foam footbed.” The lining is also made of moisture-wicking materials to help eliminate the risk of blisters or sweaty toes. The Carnival style also reportedly fits true to size, and comes in half sizes, so you can stick with your usual when adding them to your shopping cart.

Trendiest Sneaker

6. Adidas Samba Sneakers

What We Like

  • inclusive size range
  • timeless design

What We Don’t Like

  • not a lot of traction

Adidas

Turns out these classic kicks aren’t just super trendy, they’re also super comfortable. In fact, former Wellness Director Sarah Stiefvater walked more than 100 miles in them on a recent trip to Europe and didn’t experience a single blister or bruise. “I wore this pair exactly once before embarking on my trip, and had nary a blister in 11 days (11 days of a lot of walking),” says Stiefvater. “I also liked the way they looked with nearly everything else I packed, a major win. I had three different pairs of black pants (leather, denim and trousers) and found my Sambas went perfectly with each. I didn’t love the way they looked with a black mini skort and tights, but I’m eager to try styling them with a wider variety of pieces going into the spring. They’re simple enough to not steal focus but I find they add just the right amount of understated cool.”

Best Lightweight Sneaker

7. Allbirds Tree Runners

What We Like

  • breathable mesh upper
  • roomy footbed
  • under $100

What We Don’t Like

  • available only in whole sizes

Allbirds

These vegan sneakers are incredibly breathable, machine washable and super lightweight so you won’t feel bogged down after a full day on your feet. And, according to Wu, they’re also super roomy, which is great news for anyone with wider feet or bunions. “From the get-go, these [felt like they] were made for wide, flat feet,” raves Wu. “The footbed itself has the most surface area I’ve ever seen in a shoe, meaning my toes can happily splay out. (This feature also makes it incredibly sturdy; I’m prone to tripping but never do in these.) Then, there’s the contoured footbed. Every time I put these on, I can hear my feet do a happy sigh of relief when they get that added arch support. Whether I’m out hiking, exercising or running errands, these sneakers promise all-day comfort.”

Best Waterproof Sneaker

8. Vessi Weekend Sneakers

What We Like

  • waterproof
  • machine washable
  • vegan

What We Don’t Like

  • available only in whole sizes

Vessi

If you live someplace with heavy or frequent rainfall, a chic waterproof sneaker can be a great alternative to regular rain boots. This Vessi sneaker has the same look as more breathable mesh styles, but is actually fully waterproof thanks to an innovative Dyma-tex material that works to keep rain and water out without making your feet get too overheated. “I’ve been wearing Vessis for about a year now,” says Wu. “The round and wide toe box easily accommodated my wider feet and bunions. And the waterproofing is great. I accidentally stepped in a huge puddle last winter and the water beaded right off.” Wu especially loves that these sneakers are machine washable for easy care. “Only drawback is, due to the waterproofing, they aren’t the most breathable so your foot does warm up a bit. Not a problem if you have cold feet, though!”

FAST FACTS

  • Size range: US 5 to 11
  • Available Widths: medium
  • Materials: waterproof Dyma-tex knit upper

Best Sneaker for Gym Workouts

9. lululemon Strongfeel Training Shoes

What We Like

  • designed specifically for women
  • great for both workouts and lifestyle
  • cushy dual-density foam midsole

What We Don’t Like

lululemon

lululemon first launched shoes in March 2022 with the BlissFeel, a running shoe designed specifically for women. They pretty much immediately became a huge hit, prompting the brand to release even more women-focused styles, including the Strongfeel training sneaker which is intended to be worn for gym workouts and HIIT, but is absolutely stylish enough to double as an everyday shoe. “I broke my toe a few months ago and these were the only shoes I was able to wear without pain,” raves Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay. “They’re made for cross-training so the sole of the shoe actually feels flatter and less cushioned than your typical running sneaker, but that’s exactly why they’ve been a godsend for recovery. Since it’s designed for support and stability (rather than propelling you forward), I don't have to put as much weight on my toes just to walk around. Plus, they pair with everything from dresses to jeans.”

Best Sneaker for Running

10. HOKA Clifton 10

What We Like

  • comes in wide widths
  • lots of color options
  • beloved by runners of all levels

What We Don’t Like

  • exaggerated sole may not be for everyone

HOKA

HOKA shoes have become immensely popular over the past few years, beloved for their high levels of cushion and amped-up foam soles. But the crème de la crème appears to be the Clifton style. Numerous runners told me they swear by these shoes, as did frequent walkers and new moms. More than one also mentioned that they’d been turned onto the shoes by medical professionals, who praised the high level of support and roomy toe box. “My podiatrist recommended these to me when I had peroneal tendonitis,” says Senior Director of Brand Partnerships Randee Cerota, “and I’ve been a fan ever since! They are so comfy, offer great support and are also lightweight.” The Clifton has also been spotted on celebs like Kylie Jenner and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Best High-Cushion Sneaker for Running

11. ON Running Cloudmonster

What We Like

  • ample cushion
  • cool aesthetics
  • highly supportive insole

What We Don’t Like

  • high price point
  • not ideal for long runs

ON Running

If you’re looking for an everyday running shoe with maximum cushion, Senior Commerce Editor Stephanie Maida highly recommends these ON Running kicks. “Despite their name, and the futuristic look of their ‘monster cushioning,’ the running shoes are much slimmer and sleeker in person than they appear on the website,” says Maida. “I don’t mind a chunky sneaker, but I was pleasantly surprised when I opened them up and discovered just how streamlined they actually are.” She adores the cushioned soles, which are also curved to gently encourage your feet to roll forward as you running, assisting your natural running gait. As she tells me, “I personally enjoy the springiness of the cushion in action; together with the pronounced rocker design (meaning, the forefoot of the sneaker curves slightly upward), the shoes make it so that I’m effortlessly propelled forward as I run, while each step provides a burst of energy.”

Most Stylish Running Sneaker

12. Tracksmith Eliot Runner

What We Like

  • great for everyday use and running workouts
  • super chic design
  • works for (almost) all types of running workouts

What We Don’t Like

  • higher price point
  • may be too narrow for wider feet

tracksmith

Tracksmith launched just about ten years ago, but in that time it has swiftly gained a cult following for its minimalist running gear with a vintage appeal. And at the end of 2022, the brand finally launched its very first shoe—a classic lace-up trainer built to provide comfort and stability for the vast majority of runners, no matter their speed or experience level. Both the midsole and the insole are made from responsive Pebax foam to give you double the amount of cushion for comfort even on your longest marathon training run. I love any shoe that can do it all, meaning I can wear it for just about any type of training run and I can wear it in my regular day-to-day without it looking so obviously like a serious workout shoe. They don’t come cheap, but they’re worth it in my opinion for the amount of use I get out of them, on and off the track. (P.S. On the off chance you aren’t in love with your Eliot Runners, Tracksmith offers free returns up to 30 days or 100 miles—whichever comes first—after you receive your shoes.)

13. New Balance 990

What We Like

  • available in narrow, regular, wide and extra-wide widths
  • available in kids, women’s and men’s sizes
  • made in the U.S.

What We Don’t Like

  • you might end up matching with every man in your neighborhood between the ages 40 and 75
  • high price tag (and they rarely go on sale)

New Balance

My dad owned about 35 pairs of these when we were kids so one day I finally asked for a pair of my own to see what all the hype was about. Since then, I maintain that these are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever put on my feet. This old-school gray style is also available in women’smen’s and kids’ sizes, so the entire fam can get in on the fun, which is perhaps why it’s earned its status as a classic. It comes with an Ortholite insole and a shock-absorbing ENCAP midsole that will keep you comfortably on your feet for hours at a time. A dual-density foam collar offers extra support and stability around the ankle without feeling too restrictive, and the toe box is nice and roomy. While lots of reviewers mention loving these for walking or standing for long periods of time, they are on the heavier side, so may not be great for running anything longer than a 5K.

FAST FACTS

Editor Favorite Sneaker

14. New Balance 574 Core

What We Like

  • under $100
  • great for everyday use
  • available in wide widths

What We Don’t Like

  • limited color options

New Balance

If you don’t want to invest quite so much into a pair of sneakers (or the 990s are, yet again, sold out), reviewers highly recommend New Balance’s 574s. “I am a big fan of New Balance’s 574s as an alternative to the always sold out 990s,” says Gillen. “They’re very supportive and comfortable, plus there’s no break-in period. In my experience they run true to size, and I love that they look so cute and trendy with multiple outfits.” The vintage-inspired design isn’t nearly as chunky as the 990, but don’t think that means the sole isn’t every bit as comfortable. The midsole is a Goldilocks combination of soft foam paired with a durable polyurethane rim to give you a balance of cushion and bounce that will keep your feet happy all day long. It’s also partially made from recycled materials as part of the brand’s continuing sustainability efforts. Most reviews find these shoes run true to size, but if you want extra room in the toe box or space for your own insoles, we recommend going up a half size from your usual.

FAST FACTS

  • Materials: mesh and suede upper, EVA foam midsole, rubber outsole

Best Vegan Sneaker

15. APL TechLoom Pro

What We Like

  • great for both everyday wear and working out
  • lots of color options
  • 100 percent vegan
  • machine washable

What We Don’t Like

  • only go up to a size 11
  • according to reviews they may run small

APL

Yes, these sleek sneakers were originally designed for running, but the minimalist design makes them a great option for everyday use as well. Don’t let the relatively thin sole fool you, either. It’s made from a proprietary foam designed for “extreme comfort” and to “maximize energy generation,” which basically means these beauties will keep your heels and arches feeling good and put a little extra pep in your step, no matter how long you’re on your feet. The seamless upper material is also incredibly breathable, perfect for hot or humid days. Per LaBarbera, “I love APL's Techloom sneakers. They’re lightweight, super comfy and always have best neutral color combos. Even wearing them daily, they last for so long.”

FAST FACTS

Best Hands-Free Sneaker

16. Kizik London Sneakers

What We Like

  • slip-on design
  • breathable mesh upper
  • removable, washable insoles

What We Don’t Like

  • may feel narrow on those with wide feet

Kizik

Kizik sneakers have a unique design that allows you to slip them on and off, totally hands-free, without damaging the back of the heel over time. There are multiple styles to choose from, but Executive Editor Alexia Dellner is partial to the London for its comfortable, breathable mesh upper and roomy footbed. “They're sooooo comfy!” she raves. “They also have the added benefit of being very pregnancy-friendly (I can slip them on without having to bend over, or ahem, ask my husband to put them on for me). I have wide feet and a high arch (lucky me) so it can be hard to find sneakers that don’t squeeze in the wrong places and aren’t a size too big. The Kizik London sneakers manage to cushion my feet without feeling tight, and I didn't need to size up like I sometimes have to with other shoes.” Indeed, reviews suggest these run true to size. Per one reviewer with self-proclaimed wide, flat feet, “These are great. [The] sneakers are comfortable and supportive and easy to slip on, which is great when you’re out the door walking the dogs at 5:30 am.”

  • Size Range: US 6 to 13
  • Available Widths: medium and wide

What to Consider When Choosing Which Comfortable Sneaker to Buy

“First and foremost when shopping for new shoes, find shoes that fit well,” advises Dr. Sharkey. She suggests trying on new shoes at the end of the day to account for the natural swelling that occurs throughout the day. “Choosing shoes later in the day will ensure that the shoes fit comfortably no matter when worn.” And while most adults will likely admit they haven’t had their shoe size measured since high school (or earlier), getting properly measured in a shoe store every now and then can ensure you’re still getting the correct size, especially as that size may vary by brand. She also stresses the importance of paying attention to the fit of the toe box, i.e., the front of your shoe. “Toes shouldn’t be squished together.” Lastly, she notes that finding the right shoe is really dependent on how and when you plan to wear it. “Know what you are using the shoes for—casual shoes to run errands are going to be very different that shoes for walking hiking paths in your neighborhood and running shoes for the gym.”
