With more than 70 NYFW shows and events packed into just six days and strewn all about the city, I often feel like a shell of a woman by the time the week ends. (I can’t attend everything, of course, but even just trying keep up on social media is exhausting.) However, there are some trends so prevalent that even my deeply sleep-deprived brain can latch on. And, as is often the case, the best ones are spotted not on the runway, but in the audience. What’s the biggest street style trend to come out of New York this time ‘round? Lace.

Knee-Length Skirts Are Trending Again, and I Am Absolutely Not Here for It

Romantic lace of every variety was the number one trend I spotted on the streets of NY and at the shows I attended. At a party celebrating the new Vivrelle x Revolve pop-up in SoHo, I spotted no less than four women all wearing the same lace trimmed Zara slip dress that's been dominating my Instagram feed. At that event and numerous others, I also saw countless lace trim camisoles, ruffled lace blouses, boho lace minidresses and sheer lace midi skirts. And when it came time for my daily scroll of NYFW Insta, I was again inundated with a sea of gorgeous delicate lace designs.

Many lacey numbers followed in the sartorial footsteps of spring’s Boho 3.0 trend, leaning into ruffles and flowy silhouettes. But I also noted other sexy lace aesthetics, specifically: peek-a-boo lace moments, using the delicate fabric to show off high-waist briefs or a contrasting colored bra.

Lace trims on silky camisoles and slip dresses were also a popular choice. The simplest version: silk tanks or blouses tucked neatly into high-waist trousers or midi-length skirts. But other women played around with interesting layering options, like throwing an asymmetrical lace-trim dress over a pair of loose jeans or another skirt or dress.

When push comes to shove, there’s really no wrong way to embrace lace this fall and winter, especially around the holidays.

3 Great Lace Picks To Shop for Fall (Plus How To Style Them)

This ruffled blouse is boho lace at it’s finest. I love that the fabric provides enough coverage that you won’t be totally exposed without a camisole underneath, but can definitely still play up that peek-a-boo aspect. For this stunner, I’d recommend leaning into those bohemian vibes, either with some loose-leg jeans and clogs or a floaty midi skirt and suede boots. Accessorize with a slouchy handbag and some oversize earrings to finish the look in style.

If a totally sheer lace skirt feels too bold for your tastes, try investing in a midi with a dainty lace trim instead. You can wear this easy wardrobe staple as you would any slip skirt—with an untucked button-up, with a cozy textured knit or to zhuzh up a plain white tee. But if you want to go for a super-trendy combination, I suggest layering a preppy polo shirt or rugby shirt over the top (leave it untucked to avoid unwanted bumps in the silk fabric). As for footwear, opt for some retro sneakers or penny loafers with crew socks.

Another popular pick I spotted all throughout fashion week was this asymmetrical Zara top. It comes in a pale yellow and icy blue, but the black version is definitely the most versatile of the three. For a night out with friends, you can definitely tuck this top into a pair of dark-wash high-waist jeans and finish with a chain-strap shoulder bag and some strappy kitten-heel sandals. But for day I’d leave the hem untucked and layered over bottoms in a lighter hue—light wash jeans, white wide-leg trousers, the above pink Reformation slip skirt—to really highlight that gorgeous lace trim and slanted silhouette.
