For the first time this year, I found myself not reaching for my jean jacket. It had nothing to do with the jacket itself; I wanted to pair it with a variety of dresses, shorts, even other denim (a look that’s once again on-trend). But something about the fitted cut and stiffness wasn’t vibing with my 2025 identity. It was giving structure while the rest of my wardrobe felt functional and free. Was I done with the transitional staple for good? Was it no longer a reliable layer?
Nope, there’s just a new way to wear it.
I discovered my new look courtesy of Becky Malinsky, the fashion editor behind 5 Things You Should Buy on Substack. She recently discussed how much she despises jean jackets, mainly due to the rigidity. But, she maintains, there are trendy versions out there, you just have to look for these three things:
1. It sits comfortably on the body, thanks to a softer denim
2. It allows your elbows to fold and move easily without restriction
3. It makes a statement, either with an oversize fit, non-traditional wash or creative stitching or lapels
Luckily, the 2025 lineup of denim jackets is not only unique, but showstopping, made with exaggerated proportions and a soft enough denim that fits more like a blouse and less like a straight jacket. Read on for some of my favorites.
