As a shortie, I’m constantly tweaking all the trends—and even timeless staples—to suit my figure. I follow my favorite small-stature celebs (love you lots, Sabrina Carpenter and Florence Pugh) to see how they are rocking the latest looks. And I'm taking tips from my colleagues, who have schooled me on the one shoe shorties absolutely must wear and which flare jeans can work on abbreviated legs.
However, to refresh my wardrobe for spring as a petite woman, I can't dependably just add-to-cart every new trend and expect it to look good on my frame. Luckily, I was able to score some pro tips from style coach Angela Foster on what I should prioritize, helping me create a petite capsule collection that mixes reliable classics with on-trend styles. The ten items she recommended will dependably take me through everything from business casual to vacation chic, all without making me took like I’m swimming in fabric or wearing my dad’s jacket. Here are my shoppable recommendations, based on Foster’s insider guidance and expertise, for what every woman under 5’4” should buy now and forever.
Meet the Stylist
Angela Foster is a Fort Lauderdale-based wardrobe consultant who specializes in short women’s style. After working as an executive in the fashion and beauty industry for 20-plus years, Foster now advises professional women on what to wear to maximize their authority and style while minimizing time and effort, so they can curate a closet full of the latest and classic petite-friendly styles.

1. V-Neck Blouses and Sweaters
“If given a choice between V-neck or any other neckline, go with the V every time,” Foster says. “The airiness combined with the 'arrow' shape helps petites create the illusion of length.”

2. Cropped Styles
Foster advises clients to take advantage of the varied cropped styles available this season. “They’re a blessing for petites—they hit many of us (especially short-waisted petites) in the exact right spot (at the hipbones or slightly above) without flashing a ton of midriff like they would on tall chicks,” she says. In particular, she recommends picking up a trendy cropped trench coat, noting that “they’ve always been a nearly impossible item to find—but this season, they’re everywhere.”

3. Blazers
Foster calls blazers “quite possibly the smartest addition to any petite capsule wardrobe,” for their versatility both in and out of the office. “They’re the perfect third piece for career outfits,” she explains, and says that you can also easily “pop it on with a pair of denim pants to create your own easy and appropriate summer Friday work uniform.”
Foster notes that blazers even work well for elevating casual weekend looks and recommends picking up a few neutrals before you head for a trendier find, like a cropped utility style or pastel tweed hue. For the most flattering cut, choose a length that hits at your hip bones or higher.

4. Long Slip Skirts
“A long slip skirt is an amazing option for petites. The lightweight material is incredibly flattering and the style is ridiculously versatile: work, weekends, date nights, et cetera,” Foster says. The stylist likes the way the skirt is elegantly covered up without adding too much bulk to a small-framed woman.

5. Mini and Above-the-Knee Skirts
“When it comes to skirts and dresses, petites should go short or long and avoid anything in between,” the stylist says. “A style that hits around the knee visually chops our vertical line and makes us look shorter. Minis are super popular right now…If you’re wondering about the ideal length, it helps to remember that the most flattering length is when the hem hits just underneath the widest part of the thigh.”

6. Crochet Dresses
You’ve likely noticed just how popular crochet dresses are this spring, and luckily for us petites, Foster recommends snagging at least one to freshen up our closets for the season. “They give a sassy nod to the ‘60s mod vibe, while feeling current," she says, adding: "They’re also the perfect weight for the warm weather headed our way and an easy, comfortable choice for casual weekends.”

7. Wide-Leg Pants and Jeans
“Wide-[leg] pants are all anyone’s talking about this season. And yes, some petites can pull them off—for example: women with a more voluptuous bust paired with slim hips and thighs,” Foster says. For petites with a different body shape, Foster recommends choosing a straight-leg option.

8. Joggers
“Joggers are everywhere, and petites around the world rejoice,” Foster says. The stylist thinks of them as the updated version of skinny jeans, which she says are “a universally flattering style for petites—especially curvy petites. And you can wear them without all the negative chatter about the style being dead, like skinny jeans.”

9. Tapered/Cigarette Pants
Called “the most universally flattering [pant style] on petites” by Foster, tapered or cigarette cut pants are definitely worth adding to your regular rotation. She explains that the reason they’re so flattering is “because the clean, tailored silhouette avoids adding unnecessary width or bulk.”

10. Mary Jane Flats
If there’s one update your shoes need for spring, it’s a good pair of Mary Jane flats instead of your usual ballet style, according to Foster. It’s “a subtle switch that adds gobs of modernity,” she says, and like the pants above, there’s a plethora to choose from right now.

Don't: Wear Culottes
While Culottes are making another comeback as a trendy, cropped pant for spring, Foster recommends that petites avoid them. She says that while they’ve gained popularity after the capris trend in 2025, this year’s culottes just don’t work as well because they’re essentially “wide-leg pants that end at the knee.”
“Anything that ends right at the knee is a cautionary tale for petites,” she shared, “The eye automatically goes straight there, making our legs look like they end at the knee."
Oh, And One Last Tip: Monochrome Is Always a Chic Idea
One last tip Foster shared with me is that it’s always a great idea for petites to opt for a monochrome look when building outfits with these wardrobe pieces. “One of the most powerful tools in our petite toolkit is to create monochromatic outfits,” she states. “Wearing the same color from head to toe creates a super flattering and elongating column of color. So be strategic (and picky) when adding pieces to your spring/summer capsule wardrobe. For example, add a navy slip skirt to wear with the navy blazer you already have, or choose a chocolate button-down to pair with your dark brown wide-leg trousers.” She also offers: “If one color head-to-toe feels limiting or restrictive, play with a tonal outfit.”
