Fall 2025 looks to be a banner season for French style, from the October premiere of Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, reviving the cool, undone elegance of 1960s Paris, to the December season five release of our over-the-top ex-pat, Emily in Paris. Of course, dear reader, you’re already channeling French style, from the classic (as in the French capsule wardrobe) to the trendy (French women in sneakers, sacré bleu!). So have I—especially since I have cracked the code on how to wear jeans like a stylish Parisienne.

According to a French pal and countless streetstyle photos I’ve pored over, French women forego the rips, tears and crazy silhouettes of us here stateside (I still love you, barrel jeans) for a more polished and sophisticated look. Dark washes, straight leg cuts and a hem that falls nicely at or above the ankle. (And of course, the waist is either high-waist or medium-rise, none of that throwback ‘90s lowrise for Sabine or Giselle.) After searching a dozen makers for the right pair, I was surprised to find the most Euro-looking denim fit at what I consider the most American of brands, J.Crew. The design is the inscrutably named J.Crew Slim-Wide Jeans and they are a great fit, even on my short-legged petite figure.

I wore these jeans through a week’s worth of shopping, working and errands, and am happy to say they retained their dark wash, straight fit and cool look. I agree with the reviewer who crowed “LOVE these jeans. perfect for petite women. They make my outfit look well put-together but also effortless.” And that’s exactly the French-woman cool I am looking for and got with this pair of jeans.

The secret is the design of the leg, which is fitted through the hips and thighs, but looser in the mid-leg and down. They are slightly cropped—the petite cut has a 24-inch inseam, an actual cropped length on someone with a shorter inseam like my 27-inch inseam—and have a nice 18 ¼ leg opening which falls more like slacks than jeans. And the inky-blue wash? It looks like raw denim, but includes 1 percent elastane for comfort stretch.

Finally, a word about comfort. In my opinion the secret to all those cool-looking French women is that they’re wearing knits and loose blouses and other comfortable items. It’s why they look so effortlessly easy—they’re not sucking themselves in to wear something. These jeans let that happen, since the medium-weight denim with a touch of stretch isn’t too binding. J. Crew says this is “denim with just a touch of stretch—like vintage jeans that have already been broken in,” a claim I can co-sign, since they stretch out just a bit during the recommended 10 wears between washing, then shrink right back down in the dryer. (And of course, I turn my denim inside out to wash and dry to resist fading.)
