I just got back from Paris, where hints of bright, almost orangey red were everywhere. I spotted it worked into outfits in small doses like a flash of red in a scarf, a knit there, a bright accessory cutting through a neutral look. Unlike burgundy, which basically announces the arrival of fall, tomato red doesn’t immediately read as autumnal. It’s punchier and less serious. There’s warmth to it, but it doesn’t have the heaviness we’ve come to associate with fall dressing. And when paired against all the chocolate brown, charcoal, navy, camel and olive we naturally start reaching for this time of year, tomato red wakes everything up.

Despite its intensity, tomato red is easy to wear. Think about it the same way you would denim or leopard print. And, please, stop worrying about whether it technically matches and simply put it on.

How to Wear Tomato Red This Fall

If wearing bright red makes you envision an enormous statement coat, you can relax. My favorite way to incorporate the color is actually in smaller doses. Start with sneakers or a scarf. A red sneaker with jeans and a white button-down—or with trousers and a cashmere sweater—is an incredibly easy way to bring the trend into your wardrobe without allowing it to take over the entire outfit.

Another trick I love is a tomato-red tank layered underneath a blazer. Keep everything else relatively simple and let that sliver of red do the work. And the easiest option of all? A red sweater tied around your shoulders. You don’t even have to commit to wearing it. Throw one over a trench or blazer to let the color become the focal point. And if you are ready to go bigger, do it. Try a tomato-red knit with brown trousers, a red skirt with a navy sweater or even a red coat over an otherwise completely neutral outfit.

If you’re going to invest in tomato red, a cashmere cardigan is a smart place to start. The saturated shade makes the classic knit feel much more current, and I’d wear it buttoned with dark denim or draped over my shoulders with a trench for just a hint of color.

A tomato-red trench is definitely not for the color-shy, but that’s exactly why it works this season.

Rather than saving them for sporty looks, I’d treat this pair like a neutral and wear them with everything from straight-leg jeans to tailored trousers and a blazer.

A pair of statement earrings gives you the same jolt of color without requiring commitment. I especially like the idea of these peeking out from underneath a chunky knit or paired with an all-black look.

The dramatic color combined with the pleated silhouette makes this maxi feel cool enough for an event, but I’d also toughen it up for fall with a leather jacket or chunky boot.

Even sweatpants are getting the tomato-red treatment. Pair with a crisp button-down, structured coat and loafers for a high-low combo.

Let the collar peek out from underneath a gray, navy or chocolate-brown sweater, or wear it under a coat with dark denim for an easy flash of color.
