When it comes to style, I can’t help but bow down (royal pun intended) to the trendsetting Brits across the pond. Now, with autumn on the horizon, what wardrobe advice can we borrow from them for our own attire? I chatted with London-based fashion expert, Stephanie Meraz, to get the sartorial scoop on the best British-loved pieces she’s been scouting on the streets as fall approaches.

Meet the Expert

Stephanie Meraz is a fashion expert—and former PureWow editor—who resides in London. She’s also the creator of a recently launched lifestyle Substack, called With the Wind.

1. Cotton Poplin Skirts

According to Meraz, who lives on the west side of London, it’s been the summer of the prairie skirt. The fall evolution? She’s already noticing a continuation of the trend via lots of cotton poplin skirts paired with darker fall neutrals (a deep brown, a rich burgundy). Skirt lengths are longer, too, as the season changes. Add a pretty trench or leather jacket and you’re ready for fluctuating temps.

2. Cowboy Boots

Londoners are reaching for the American classic, but not in the way you might think, says Meraz. They’re pairing them with mini skirts, shorts, even mini-dresses, and she expects the wearability to extend easily into fall. In fact, the western-inspired staple is just the right footwear to pair with a midi or full-length cotton poplin skirt. (See above.)

3. Silk Scarves as Belts

A silk scarf has long been in rotation for Brits, but this season, they’re mirroring the use case that has been bubbling up world-wide: Re-fashioning them as belts. Meraz said she’s noticed quite a few Londoners wearing then tied along the waist of linen trousers. “It’s a fun way to elevate more basic pieces and introduce color, too.”
