I, a Pizza Enthusiast, Tried the New DiGiorno Wood Fired-Style Pies—Here’s My Honest Take

from the tastebuds of a pizza critic

As a New Jersey native who went to college in New York, I’ve been lucky enough to have consistent access to great pizza—a fact that’s unintentionally led me to become somewhat of a pizza snob. My favorite type of pizza, you ask? Crispy and airy crust, preferably wood-fired with a little char. So, when I found out about the newly released DiGiorno Wood Fired-Style Pizzas I could make from the comfort of home, I was skeptical, yet intrigued—and knew I had to try them for myself. Of course, the only appropriate way to eat a bunch of pizzas is with your friends, so some of my fellow New Jerseyans and I got together to test the flavors, including Premium Pepperoni, Supreme Speciale, Italian Meat Trio and Four Cheese. Below, some honest thoughts—with pictures.

The DL on DiGiorno’s New Wood Fired-Style Collection

DiGiorno delivered for anyone who’s ever craved a wood fired-style pie at home—no brick oven or flames required. These four new flavors promise a crispy-on-the-outside, pillowy-on-the-inside crust, with restaurant quality taste and premium ingredients to boot. Basically, all the things I look for in a pizza. But did these new flavors live up to their promise?

Premium Pepperoni

First, we began with a classic: Premium Pepperoni. To me, a pepperoni pizza should be greasy (but not too greasy), cheesy and have a little bit of crunch—soggy pepperoni is an immediate turn-off. I placed the frozen pizza directly on the oven rack (per the instructions) and let them cook for 15 mins (some flavors required more time, more on that below). I am happy to report that this flavor was my favorite out of the four. The crust was as promised: lighter and crispier than a typical slice of frozen pizza. The quality of the pepperoni also stood out to me. It was perfectly crunchy and didn’t add too much extra grease to the pie. Overall, a great option I would definitely buy again.

Supreme Speciale

Next, we indulged in the Supreme Speciale. Let me be clear: this pizza is loaded with toppings, including peppers, onions, pepperoni and sausage. It’s the kind of slice you need two hands to support. Despite the fact that I don’t typically love a pizza with too many toppings, this one surprised me. It was well balanced and the meat didn’t overwhelm the other flavors or make the pie too greasy. My friends and I agreed, however: the peppers and onions were on the chewier side and didn’t add a ton of flavor. In general, though, we enjoyed this one as well.

Four Cheese

Cheese lovers, listen up. Admittedly, I’m not usually a huge four cheese fan, but my friends who prefer extra cheese loved this variation. Since there were less ingredients overall, it was easier to get a better sense of the quality of the two main ingredients (sauce and cheese)—and although one friend wished this flavor had more sauce to compensate for the amount of cheese on top, the flavors were tasty nonetheless. I also ended up cooking this pizza for an extra five minutes in the oven, since my friends and I agreed we like our cheese slightly well done—so feel free to take liberties with cooking time to get your desired texture.

Italian Meat Trio

This flavor shocked me the most. I was pleasantly surprised to find the toppings (pepperoni, salami and sausage) weren’t totally overpowering. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of meat on it, which is not usually my forte. But since the quality was so good, I had no problem saying yes to another slice.

Final Thoughts

Typically, frozen pizzas that promise thin crust sometimes can taste…well, like cardboard. These Wood Fired-Style Pizzas, however, maintained a fluffy interior and crispy exterior and the slightly charred taste of the crust was a nice touch. So whether you’re hosting a party with friends, craving a restaurant-quality pizza without leaving the house or are just plain curious, the DiGiorno Wood Fired-Style Pizzas might be your new go-to freezer staple.
