factor meal subscription review: factor meals on a counter
Factor

As a food editor, I’ve always been a bit wary of ready-to-eat meal subscriptions. Most seemed too expensive (convenience is notoriously pricy), and despite the time a heat-and-eat delivery saves in the kitchen, I wasn’t convinced that it’d be that much tastier than something I could make myself in 30 minutes or less. However, when I had a chance to try a week’s worth of meals in 2021 from Factor, a dietitian-designed, chef-prepared meal service that boasts fresh (never frozen) dinners, I set out to challenge my own assumptions, one bite at a time.

Four years later, the brand has a whole new slew of dishes to offer, ranging from garlic herb chicken to Santa Fe-style green chile beef. I gave six more recent offerings another taste to bring you the following reviews and original photos, so you know what to add to your box (or if it’s right for you in the first place).

Factor—an offshoot of HelloFresh, one of the leading recipe-driven meal kits on the market—is a ready-to-eat meal subscription service. Every week, subscribers can choose from a new batch of dozens of dietitian-designed, chef-made dishes made with wholesome ingredients.

Once you select your menu, based on your diet and food preferences (there are options for various different meal plans, including keto, low-carb, plant-based and dairy-free), the fully cooked meals are shipped straight to your door. Once they arrive, all you have to do is store them in the fridge until mealtime, then heat them in the oven or microwave to enjoy.

The goal is to make eating nutritiously more attainable by cutting out the heavy lifting. Factor’s dinners are free of hormones, antibiotics, gluten and added sugars. (There are breakfast and dessert options available too, like protein-rich smoothies, wellness shots and egg bites.) Better yet, each subscription includes a 20-minute consultation with a dietician, who can help you choose the best meals for your wellness goals and lifestyle.

Read on to hear about each dinner in my meal plan (and see unedited photos of what the food *really* looked like).

Day 1: Broccoli & Cheddar Shredded Chicken

Broccoli and cheddar shredded chicken with garlic rosemary zucchini and leek butter

  • Nutrition: 610 calories, 45g fat, 17g carbs, 34g protein, 8g sugar, 4g fiber
  • Taste: 18/20

The chicken was super tender, the cheese sauce was very indulgent and the zucchini was shockingly tender-crisp for having been microwaved in a pool of oniony butter. The smell and taste of the chicken portion gave broccoli-cheddar soup. It tasted herby and fresh—no rubbery texture here.

Day 2: Grilled Pork Chop & Butternut Mash

Grilled pork chop and butternut mash with caramelized onions and roasted Brussels sprouts

  • Nutrition: 500 calories, 23g fat, 31g carbs, 43g protein, 13g sugar, 7g fiber
  • Taste: 17/20

This smelled like an fall dinner party. However, I thought the portion of sprouts was meager, dry and bland. The mash, however, was beautifully creamy, sweet and jammy. That said, I thought it could've used a touch more salt. As for the pork, it had some nice char and a surprisingly succulent texture. I expected it to be much drier, but if you put it on a plate, no one would know you didn't cook it yourself.

Day 3: Caramelized Onion & Gouda Shredded Beef

Caramelized onion and gouda shredded beef with red potatoes, garlic broccoli and carrots

  • Nutrition: 460 calories, 25g fat, 36g carbs, 24g protein, 11g sugar, 7g fiber
  • Taste: 17/20

The aromas of the black pepper-kissed meat, sweet alliums and buttery cheese were instantly apparent. The juicy, tender beef looked like what you'd see in a cheesesteak, and it tasted super rich, smoky and savory. (I appreciate the inherent decadence of Factor's meals, but the lack of grains definitely gives keto.) The veggies were a bit watery and bland, and this particular pairing looked like an old-school T.V. dinner or hospital food; for the price, I feel like it should appear a bit fancier.

Day 4: Smoked Gouda & Bacon Shredded Chicken Hash

Smoked gouda and bacon shredded chicken hash with roasted green beans and pearl onions

  • Nutrition: 530 calories, 28g fat, 40g carbs, 32g protein, 9g sugar, 7g fiber
  • Taste: 16/20

The veggie portion looked tiny to me, but it tasted savory and tangy, sort of like balsamic. The amped-up smokiness of the cheese and bacon was undeniable on the nose the moment it came out of the microwave. On the tongue though, it was a bit more one-note. I did really enjoy the texture of the juicy poultry, wilted-but-not-mushy greens and soft potatoes, though.

Day 5: Grilled Chicken & Lemon Herb Vinaigrette

Grilled chicken and lemon herb vinaigrette with kale, roasted peppers, green beans and carrots

  • Nutrition: 450 calories, 23g fat, 21g carbs, 38g protein, 10g sugar, 7g fiber
  • Taste: 16/20

The veggie side was particularly unremarkable in terms of flavor (read: bland and vaguely sweet) compared to the others, although the carrots and green beans still had solid crispness to them. The chicken was certainly herby, not to mention impeccably juicy and soft, but the citrus got lost. The kale and tomatoes were my favorite part; the pairing reminded me of pizza.

Day 6: Fajita-Style Shredded Beef

Fajita-style shredded beef with queso, honey-ancho carrots and charro beans

  • Nutrition: 390 calories, 19g fat, 32g carbs, 25g protein, 12g sugar, 7g fiber
  • Taste: 19/20

This meaty main was perhaps my favorite of the lot, despite an excess of moisture compared to the others on this list. (Maybe it was due to the the rather large whole tomatoes.) It was very evenly, deeply seasoned and the beef's texture was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The beans were very flavorful with an acidic edge and a starchy-yet-toothsome texture. I was also surprised by how much I enjoyed the slightly spicy carrots, as I'm usually a carrot hater. But these were cooked well and offered a tasty balance of sweet and savory.

The Bottom Line

If Factor is within your budget, the meals definitely won’t disappoint—but it all comes down to price. While discounts are available, the retail price for six meals is $81, (or $13.49 per serving). Sure, the more you buy the cheaper it gets, starting at $11 per serving for 18 meals. But that's still on the pricey side for many folks' budgets. However, it was so nice not having to think about what I was cooking for dinner—and being left with zero cleanup.

The convenience and price are only really worth it if the meals are actually tasty. And TBH, all of them tasted pretty darn good to me, and it was a bonus that they were made with nutritious, high-quality ingredients.

That said, if you’re on a low-fat diet, your menu options may be more limited. I used to be on Weight Watchers (now WW) and decided to track some of the dinners in my app to see how many points they’d clock in at—most were at least 19, about 60 percent of my daily allotted points. Alternatively, if you’re on keto or another high-protein, high-fat diet, Factor could save you a ton of grocery planning and cooking time. It all comes down to your budget, wellness goals and dietary preferences.
