Ice cream is healthy for you...well, it’s good for your soul, at least. But it’s also high in sugar and fat, and is regarded as more of an occasional treat than a nutritional staple by experts. But my motto is “everything in moderation,” so instead of cutting the category from your diet altogether, why not look for a boost in the protein department?

It’s an essential macronutrient for muscle building and repair and helps your body produce important hormones, plus it keeps you satisfied and can help prevent a sugar crash. Luckily, there are many high-protein ice cream brands to choose from in a range of flavors and formats. Our food team tasted as many as we could get our hands on to bring you the following honest reviews and original photos, along with shopping tips from dietitian, nutritionist and exercise physiologist Dr. Felicia D. What Is High-Protein Ice Cream?

"High protein ice creams generally have 6 to 10 grams of protein per serving," Stoler explains. "Sometimes, there's added protein from dairy or plant-based sources. The question about whether or not it's good is really about how it fits into your daily or weekly calorie intake. Ice cream has added sweeteners, whether from sugar or non-nutritive sweeteners, but it can be part of a healthy and balanced diet if consumed in moderation."

Essentially, high protein ice cream meets the following criteria:

  • It contains added protein. High-protein ice cream can be made with regular or non-dairy milk, depending on the brand, but it usually contains added protein in the form of milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate or plant-based protein concentrates (like those made from peas or soy).
  • It’s made with low-fat dairy. This also depends on the brand, but since many high-protein ice creams are also “light” or low-calorie, they’re often made from skim milk instead of whole.
  • It’s sweetened with sugar substitutes. Many high-protein ice cream brands also swap sugar for low-sugar or sugar-free alternatives for sweetness, such as stevia, erythritol, monk fruit extract and vegetable glycerin. This doesn’t affect the protein content, but it lowers the overall sugar content of the pints.

Tips for Shopping for High-Protein Ice Cream

Full disclosure: Stoler herself doesn't buy the stuff. "I don't seek high protein ice cream and definitely don't want any with non-nutritive sweeteners. If I'm going to eat ice cream, gelato or frozen custard, it's going to be old school, and I would pick the flavor that's fulfilling my mood at the moment."

But, if this is something you're shopping for, she says to choose based on your own wellness concerns and goals. "People should read labels based upon what is important to THEM," Stoler explains. "Is it protein? Calories? Added sugars? Non-nutritive sweeteners? Number of ingredients?"

Alternatively, you can opt for a homemade treat that'll satisfy an ice cream craving instead of store-bought high-protein ice cream. "I actually love to take fruit that's almost over ripe and blend it with non-fat, plain Greek yogurt or cottage cheese in a blender," Stoler says. "Add honey, then freeze it in either ice pop, silicone cupcake or ice cube trays for your own healthier 'ice cream.' You can also take any ice cream and increase the protein content by adding chopped nuts as a topping."

How We Chose the Best High-Protein Ice Cream

I, a food editor, first asked the PureWow team for their most beloved recommendations and flavors. Next, I scoured the internet for popular high-protein brands, rounding up those that are very high in protein (like 12g per serving) and moderately high (like 5g per bar) alike. If they were on the lower side, I tried to consider if they were low in sugar or calories as well.

I wasn't able to get my hands on some more niche high protein ice cream brands, like Arctic Zero and Snow Monkey, but I called in samples and shopped for as many as possible. Next, PureWow VP of editorial Candace Davison and I tasted our samples to bring you the following feedback.

1. Two Spoons

This brand's high-protein ice cream line is currently out of stock—yup, every flavor. Hopefully that means they're all as tasty as our tester alleges. Two Spoons launched this collection of drool-worthy ice creams with zero added sugar back in April, including Fudgy Brownie, Strawberries & Cream, Caramel Swirl and Rocky Road varieties.

"Rocky Road fans, rise up!" Davison raves. "Out of the Two Spoons flavors I tried, this one stood out for its rich cocoa flavor and super-gooey marshmallow swirl. The marshmallow is a little thinner and more translucent than the typical marshmallow creme, but I didn't mind it. There's a slightly chemical-y aftertaste here that sets it apart from traditional ice cream. It's not so strong to be off-putting though."

2. Protein Pints

Best for Flavor Purists

With a whopping 30 grams of protein per container and only 360 calories, you could eat the entire pint without missing a beat (and I won't judge you for it). Available in seven flavors—Cookie Dough, Peanut Butter Chip, Mint Chip, Chocolate, Strawberry, Cookies & Cream and Coffee—these are specifically designed to give your nightly treat a protein boost.

I tasted the five core flavors, and my favorites were the Strawberry and Mint Chip. The former was sweet-tart and smooth with a lovely blush hue, while the latter was plentiful with chocolate chunks and very refreshing overall.

3. Halo Top

Best Flavor Selection

  • Nutritional Information (per ⅔ cup): 160 calories, 5g protein, 5g fat, 32g carbs, 19g sugars
  • Best Flavor: Sweet Cream Cold Brew

"Halo Top has come a long way since I first tried it," Davison admits. "I used to associate a bit of an aftertaste with it, but not anymore with any of the flavors I tried." Thanks to ultrafiltered skim milk, which has been processed to remove lactose and water, the protein molecules here are concentrated for a higher amount.

Despite its healthy label, Halo Top manages to excite with its extensive and creative flavor lineup. "I'd never guess [the Sweet Cream Cold Brew] was a protein ice cream," Davison says. "It had the smooth, creamy texture and latte-like flavor I associate with premium coffee ice creams—more like Coldstone or Häagen-Dazs—and the fudge espresso pieces provided a nice richness. Iced mocha fans will love this one."

She also says her kids devoured the Cookies & Brownies variety ("The mix-ins are on par with Ben & Jerry's; the brownie bits are so fudgy that I found myself digging around in the pint to get more"), and the Caramel Cheesecake was somehow decadent and refreshing ("The caramel really comes through with a buttery note, and while I wish there were a bit more tanginess to it, the cheesecake delivers").

4. Enlightened Light Ice Cream

Best Low-Sugar Ice Cream Bars

  • Best Flavor: Sea Salt Caramel

The brand’s O.G. low-calorie line is a high-protein staple. Each pint contains 280 to 400 calories and 20 to 24 grams of protein (depending on the flavor), and the frozen dessert is made with milk protein concentrate. It also contains 60 to 80 percent less sugar than traditional ice cream and comes in fun flavors.

I preferred the portability and portion control of the bars over the pints, and I particularly enjoyed the simplicity of the Sea Salt Caramel flavor. It reminded me a lot of the caramel sauce from Friendly's (I had my fair share of sundaes back in the day), or the jarred Smucker's caramel sauce.

5. Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt Bars

  • Best Flavor: Pistachio Brittle

Instead of pints, Yasso makes a variety of ice cream treats (like sandwiches and chocolate-dipped bites) with Greek yogurt as the base. That’s because it’s naturally high in protein with a rich, creamy texture. Each of the brand’s dessert bars is 100 calories or less and contains 4 to 6 grams of protein from milk protein concentrate. Better yet, they come in a myriad of flavors, like butter pecan and cookies and cream.

Personally, I adored the sugared nuts vibe of the Pistachio Brittle bar. The nuttiness was strong throughout, and the pistachio bits offered crunchy respite from the silky-smooth base. If you're a pistachio stan, this take will feel like the real thing to you, trust.

6. Keto Pint

Most Keto-Friendly High-Protein Ice Cream

  • Nutritional Information (per ⅔ cup): 200 calories, 6g protein, 16g fat, 16g carbs, 3g sugars
  • Best Flavor: Peanut Butter Caramel

You don’t have to follow the keto diet to enjoy the high-protein benefits of this ketogenic ice cream brand. (Keep in mind, though, this means it has more calories and fat than other light ice cream options.) Keto Pint uses local dairy to craft its ice cream, which is available in traditional flavors, like Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Coffee and Strawberry.

Each one is sweetened with erythritol, monk fruit and stevia, and the base is a blend of cream, water, egg yolks and milk protein concentrate. You don't really get a strange aftertaste from the sweeteners, but you may detect a different texture than you're used to—almost firmer or denser. The PB Caramel flavor had a lovely balance between sweet and salty, and the peanut really dominated the overall taste.
