I don’t have a dog. I don’t have a cat. I don’t even have a guinea pig. So it may sound strange that when I was poking around the internet for a new vacuum, I was specifically looking for a model that could tackle pet hair. You see, I live in a house full of women, and as anyone who has experienced the same situation can attest, we shed just as much as any furry companion. So, it was essential that my new vac could successfully suction up not just crumbs and dust bunnies, but also the (read: my) long strands of hair that somehow manage to scatter every floor in every room. As soon as I spotted the Bissell PowerClean FurFinder ($230; $180), I knew I met my match. After using it weekly for going on three months now, here’s my full, honest review (with photos).

What Makes the Bissell PowerClean FurFinder So Special?

Bissell

As a shopping editor who pores through hundreds of product reviews on any given day, I know that Bissell is one name in the cleaning game that rarely disappoints (after all, it’s the same brand behind readers’ favorite—and my own beloved—Little Green upholstery cleaner). So that was my first sign that this vac, a recent release from the company, was gonna be good.

It’s cordless, compact and designed to convert to a handheld with the click of a button. It has two cleaning attachments in addition to the regular floor rod, and it even comes with headlights to ensure that I never miss a speck of dust or spidery knot of hair. There is a HEPA filter that locks in dust and allergens rather than kicking them up in the air, and most importantly, it boasts tangle-free brush rolls (on both the floor and FurFinder upholstery attachments) that are designed to suction up stands without getting plugged up with knotted hair.

My Experience Using the Bissell PowerClean FurFinder

What I Don't Like

  • dumping can get messy
  • wish battery life was longer

Bissell

I’ll never not be amused by my own excitement at opening up a new cleaning gadget, and I couldn’t wait to tear into this box when it arrived on my doorstep. Setting it up was so self-explanatory, I don’t even think I looked at the instruction manual. You simply click everything together. After plugging the (removable) battery in for a few hours to get its initial charge, I got to work tackling my living room and dining room straight away (both of which feature painted hardwood floors and area rugs).

The floor head swivels in both directions, a huge point for maneuverability, and gets right up against walls and under most furniture (alas, my sofas are a bit too low, but it slides under my side tables easily). The power button is conveniently located right on the handle, as is the cleaning mode button, which allows you to rev up (or down) the intensity level from eco to medium to turbo and back again.

The headlights, another huge plus, are super bright, and fully illuminate my path of cleaning. This feature has been so helpful in bringing particularly fine layers of dust into focus, which I never would have seen otherwise.

Turning it into a handheld and connecting the two other attachments is just as simple; all you have to do is unclick the top portion from the rod and plug in each one, respectively. The FurFinder upholstery brush roll also features headlights (so fun!), and has been perfect for use on my sofas and carpeted stairs. As for the skinny combination crevice tool? It comes with a brush top that you can use to dust furniture and blinds, but you can also push it back to use the small mouth on its own—something I’ve been doing to get into the tight corners of my stairs, ceilings and even the lint trap in my dryer (game-changer).

Now for the question on everyone’s mind: How well does it pick up hair? Well, as you may have guessed from all the raving I’ve been doing thus far, it lives up to its promise of not just finding “fur,” but banishing it—yes, even that which is not fur at all but someone’s thick, wavy, very much human hair. I’ve been amazed at how well all three of its cleaner heads are able to gobble up locks, from single strands to thick knots hiding in the corner of my carpets. Occasionally, some super long pieces will wrap up in the brush roll (though it doesn’t affect its performance), but since the roll is fully removable, I just click it out and slide them off. Easy peasy.

Bissell PowerClean FurFinder Vacuum Review: Before and after dust on the floor

I only have two minor complaints about this stick vacuum. One, I wish the battery life was a little longer—there have been times when I went to power it on, and it needed a charge sooner than I thought it would. Two, the dumping system can get a little messy. While removing the container is a cinch, you do have to turn out the filter by hand and pour out the debris, which can get messy. A hands-free release at the bottom would be a dream, but it’s hardly a deal-breaker considering how well this vacuum does everything else.

How Does the Bissell PowerClean FurFinder Compare to the Dyson V8?

If you’ve also been researching pet-friendly vacuums designed to tackle fur in addition to everyday dust and debris, chances are you’re weighing your options against a Dyson vacuum. I’d say this Bissell model is most comparable to the Dyson V8 ($385) in terms of construction, features and price point.

The Dyson V8 is slightly lighter at 5.8 pounds compared to the Bissell’s 7.1 pounds, and it has one additional crevice attachment that's longer and thinner for getting into high-up nooks. The Dyson vacuum’s motor is also more powerful at 500 watts compared to the Bissell’s 200 watts. Plus, it has the no-touch dumping system that I wish the PowerClean FurFinder had.

However, the Dyson V8 does not feature the headlights I now cannot clean without, and, of course, it is quite a bit pricier than the Bissell. But they both have specially designed, tangle-free brush rolls, cordless constructions and 40-minute battery run times. There’s no doubt that the Dyson V8 is a top-of-the-line pick, but if you’re looking to spend a bit less on a more cost-effective option, the Bissell PowerClean FurFinder is probably the next best thing.

Bottom Line: Is the Bissell PowerClean FurFinder Worth It?

Bissell

It lights up, it sucks up and it picks up easily—i.e., everything I could want in a vacuum. Compared to my old model, an ancient, bulky thing with a giant dust bag that I could barely lift, it’s been a major improvement. It works great on both carpet and hard floors, and since I’ve added to my arsenal of cleaning supplies, my family and I have been much less plagued by stray hairs. Would I rather use this baby over getting a haircut? Absolutely.
