From Secret Storage to Washable Covers, the Cozey Atmosphere Sofa Is Everything I Could Ask for in a Couch

If you’ve ever dreamt of becoming a furniture designer, Cozey makes it an effortless reality. Nearly every aspect of the Atmosphere sofa can be customized to your liking, from the configuration, to the shape (rounded or square), to the height of the armrests to, of course, the fabric. Available in a range of gorgeous colors, there’s corduroy, chenille, bouclé, a textured weave and ultra-durable performance polyester, and yes, they are all machine-washable. You can add an ottoman, a chaise or both, as well as opt for seats with hidden storage. 

Now, our new place has a small living room with a bit of an awkward layout. So one thing I loved about browsing Cozey was its option to view a 3D rendering of the couch in your space in virtual reality. Welcome to the future, folks. All you have to do is scan a QR code to your smartphone or tablet, then point your camera at the space where you’d like the sofa to go. This feature made it easy to visualize the couch in our room, try out different positions and decide on the perfect size, all before placing an order. By the time it arrived, we knew exactly where it would go and how it would look, which saved us all the time and effort it would have taken to play around with the physical pieces. Just in case, though, the company also offers a 30-day risk-free trial, during which you can send the sofa back for free.

In an ideal world, you would snap your fingers and a fully built couch would appear in your living room. Alas, there is some elbow grease required to put this baby together, but thankfully, not too much. As of now, Cozey does not offer White Glove delivery and setup, but the brand does deliver all the boxes to your doorstep. The hardest part of the whole process might have just been getting those inside, then getting each piece out of the box.

Otherwise, the process (which you can see in this video) is simple—though admittedly time consuming. There are no tools, screws or tiny pieces involved. You just have to hand-screw the legs into each base, slip on the fabric covers (all of which are labeled to their corresponding units) then slide and snap the arm and backrests into the seats via metal racks. (It’s kind of like a giant, cushioned Lego set.) Once each module is assembled, you connect them by placing their legs into plastic connectors on the floor (the legs are recessed slightly, so you don’t see these connectors).

My boyfriend—bless him—was able to do most of this on his own before I arrived, although it is recommended to have a second set of hands to help with lifting and sliding the pieces in. He did need my help to lift the completed modules and snap them into the leg connectors, but that was it.

As I mentioned, our place is on the smaller side, so the base storage in the sofa (and ottoman) has been a total lifesaver. My boyfriend has a 6-year-old son with a passion for building Lego and Magna-Tile metropolises, and we’re able to stack boxes upon boxes of his various kits inside a single unit. Another base holds my collection of throw blankets and pillows, while another is filled with my boyfriend’s extra wires and electronics. That’s four spacious storage containers (each with an up to 79.5-liter capacity) that can be easily accessed with the simple lift of a cushion. 

It Exceeds My Expectations of Comfort

I’ll admit that while I knew I wanted the built-in storage option, I was a little nervous that the hollow bases would make the seats less comfortable. I’m happy to report that is certainly not the case. The foam seat cushions are nice and thick—cushy enough to conform to your body, firm enough to offer plenty of support. I’ve never been a fan of sofas that you sink deep into, so I find this balance to be absolutely perfect. You would never guess that they’re sitting atop storage compartments. The back and arm cushions feel the same, and I love the cozy, snuggle-ready corners formed by the high-angled armrests.

The seats themselves are also impressively roomy. Each module is wide and deep—I could completely curl up on one and still have room left over. The three-seat configuration we went for spans just over 9 feet long (including the armrests), so my 6-foot-2 boyfriend can lay completely flat across it without his feet hanging over the side.

As for the upholstery? We opted for the chenille fabric in the rich Bordeaux burgundy and—whew—it is so soft and so luxurious. It’s not scratchy in the least, but it also feels thick and durable. I am very particular about textures and can’t think of a single thing I would change about it.

Luckily, we haven’t had any major messes to clean up yet (knock on wood), but for the sake of this review—and since it often doubles as our coffee-slash-dining table—I have so far removed and washed the ottoman cover. All it took was unfastening the Velcro closures, slipping it off and throwing it in the wash on a cold cycle. However, the covers must be air-dried flat, which took about a day. When I placed it back onto the ottoman cushion, the cover hadn’t lost its shape or soft chenille feel, nor was the color any less vibrant.

The Aesthetic Is the Perfect Balance of Modern and Timeless

Cozey has so many well-designed sofa options, but what hooked me on the Atmosphere was its sleek, sculptural lines that make it feel distinctly modern, yet classic enough not to run the risk of looking dated in a few years. This is a couch I could see growing and evolving with our home and our family well into the future.

For the past three months, the Cozey Atmosphere sofa has served as the central hub of our space. It’s our office (my boyfriend and I crack open our laptops on either armrest, which are flat, wide and sturdy enough to use as makeshift desks), our movie theater, our breakfast, lunch and dinner table. In an unfamiliar city, it has quickly become the thing that makes my new home actually feel like home. I spend hours on this beauty daily, and almost every time I sit back down on it, I can’t help but to turn to my BF and say, “God, I love this couch.”

Starting at $1,480 for the basic two-seater, the Atmosphere isn’t exactly the cheapest option out there. But considering its quality, comfort and all-around design, not to mention its various perks like storage and washability, I’d say it has the makings of a much pricier piece. In any case, it’s an investment that truly feels like an investment, since you can easily add to it, switch up its shape and rotate through different upholstery for years to come. It’s the seat that keeps on giving (and stashing).
