de'longhi truebrew coffee maker review: de'longhi truebrew coffee maker and hand holding iced coffee, side by side
Bloomingdale’s/Destinee Scott

De’Longhi (an Italian appliance company, for the uninitiated) is perhaps most famous for its espresso machines. But did you know the fancy brand also makes top-tier drip coffee makers? While you can easily prepare your daily cup of joe with a bargain drip machine, PureWow’s associate sales and deals editor, Destinee Scott, swears by the De’Longhi TrueBrew Drip Coffee Maker for its consistency, built-in grinder and iced coffee setting, just to name a few reasons.

So, if you’re in the market for a new coffee machine (or trying to cut back on Starbucks runs), hear out Scott’s editor-tested review before you let the price tag deter you. It may very well be worth the investment.

The 6 Best Affordable Espresso Machines, Tested and Reviewed by Our Editors

What Is the De’Longhi TrueBrew Coffee Maker?

What I Like

  • iced coffee setting is a must for cold coffee drinkers
  • makes a variety of brew sizes and styles
  • less wasteful, since it doesn’t use filters or pods

What I Don't Like

  • noisy
  • water tank requires regular upkeep

De'Longhi

It’s an automatic coffee machine that makes drip coffee from whole coffee beans—no filters or pods required. Not only is it designed with simple, foolproof buttons for fine-tuning your drinks, but it also comes with a built-in conical burr grinder—and state-of-the-art Bean Extract Technology—that freshly grinds, portions and prepares coffee in six difference sizes and five different styles. It also comes with a measuring scoop, water hardness test, descaler and, most importantly, free shipping (if you buy from De’Longhi directly).

“I’ve had my machine for two years now,” Scott explains “I prefer iced coffee, and this machine features an over-ice setting, which automatically adjusts to ensure I get a perfectly chilled iced coffee every morning. I think this machine is great for iced coffee drinkers, but I think it could also work for anyone who just loves a cup of joe or an espresso shot.”

If you think ditching your pod-based coffee machine would be a downgrade, think again. “The coffee tastes so much fresher,” Scott attests. “I’d never used a grinder before this machine. I was a bit nervous trying it for the first time, but it turned out to be really easy. All you have to do is pour in the beans, select the grinder setting (it’s the grinder symbol) and voilà.” If you’re not into whole beans or waiting for them to grind, no worries: There’s a bypass doser on the machine for pre-ground coffee, too.

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 12 inches by 15 inches by 15.8 inches
  • Capacity: 60 ounces
  • Weight: 19 pounds
  • Brew Sizes: 8 ounces, 12 ounces, 16 ounces, 20 ounces, 24 ounces, 3-ounce espresso
  • Brew Styles: light, gold, bold, espresso-style, over ice

Best of all, the machine offers a range of sizes and brew styles, meaning you can tinker and tweak your daily cuppa exactly to your liking. “I’ve tried every coffee and espresso size, as well as whole beans and ground coffee. You can also choose from three flavors: light, gold or bold. I like a light iced coffee. I make it almost every day,” Scott raves.

As for the cons, in her opinion, they’re pretty minimal “The water tank gets dirty if you’re not pouring in fresh water,” Scott notes. (That said, there’s an Auto-Clean function that helps you keep the machine in tip-top shape between brews without additional cleanup, and the brewing unit is removable for painless washing.)

“It’s also loud,” she adds, specifically referring to the brewing, “so you can’t sneak a cup of coffee in the middle of night without anyone knowing.”

The Bottom Line

If you like a late-night espresso or are devoted to coffee pods, this may not be the move for you. But if not, you’ll be hard pressed to find a fresher cup than one made by the TrueBrew.
