For some, enveloping yourself in a cloud-like bed of plushness is the key to a good night’s sleep. For others, the idea of sinking into a mattress is about as appealing as skydiving into a black hole. If you fall into the latter category—or if you’re dealing with chronic back pain—you’re probably in the market for a mattress that’s firm, supportive and built to last.

To find the very best, I tapped seven PureWow editors to test today’s top-rated models, from the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid (our overall winner) to the ultra-supportive Airweave (a lifesaver for back pain) to the Finch mattress by Nest Bedding (a customizable pick beloved by couples). After months of sleep trials, tossing, turning and plenty of note-taking, here are the firm mattresses we’d buy again and again.

How We Tested the Best Firm Mattresses

To separate the truly firm mattresses from the ones that just say they’re firm, we had PureWow editors sleep-test each model for at least 30 nights, taking notes on comfort, support and durability. We measured every bed against the industry-standard firmness scale of one to ten (where one is marshmallow-soft and ten is rock-hard), looking for standouts in the medium-firm (six to seven), firm (seven to eight) and extra-firm (nine to ten) categories. We also considered how each mattress performed for different sleep styles—whether it kept a side sleeper’s hips cushioned, a back sleeper’s spine aligned, or a restless partner from waking the other with motion transfer.

Beyond firmness, we paid close attention to materials (from latex and memory foam to hybrid coil builds), temperature regulation, and edge support. Finally, because buying a mattress online can feel like a leap of faith, we factored in each brand’s trial period and return policy, since a generous trial makes it easier to truly test whether a mattress lives up to its claims.

The 9 Best Mattresses in a Box, Tested by Our Editors

Best Firm Mattress Overall

1. Dreamcloud Classic Hybrid Mattress

What We Like

  • Six-layer build with plush cooling topper
  • Strong lumbar alignment without sagging
  • Near-zero motion transfer

What We Don't Like

  • Topper adds plushness that may not suit ultra-firm purists

Dreamcloud

With more than 7,300 glowing five-star reviews, this guy has earned its reputation as the firm mattress to beat. Its 12-inch, six-layer build combines a CloudQuilt cover (stitched with cooling fibers and foam) with a dense layer of contouring memory foam, an adaptive support layer, and individually wrapped coils for a no-sag, no-sink feel. The result? A surface that stays solid and steady enough to keep your spine aligned, yet cushioned just enough to relieve tension in your hips and back. As PureWow’s Editor-in-Chief, Jillian Quint, explains: “It also has a super plush topper that makes the fairly springy mattress below extra cushy, for back, stomach and side-sleepers alike.” That balance—unyielding structure softened by thoughtful layers—is exactly why so many reviewers (and Quint herself) recommend it for easing back pain.

And because firmness often comes at the cost of comfort for couples, DreamCloud’s hybrid design is especially noteworthy. Individually wrapped coils isolate motion, while the foam layers adapt to pressure points so you don’t get that rigid “board” feel. Quint adds: “The best thing is probably how little motion transfer other sleepers experience in the bed. I'm a noted tosser-and-turner, and my husband noticed absolutely no movement, even with me right beside him in bed. Highly recommended for couples with different bedtimes and sleep needs...you really don't annoy each other.” With a forever warranty and a full year to test it at home, it’s as close as you’ll get to a Birkin bag in mattress form.

Fast Facts

  • Firmness level: 6.5 (medium-firm)
  • Return Policy: DreamCloud offers a 365-night trial, which means if you find a flaw—or hate the way the mattress feels—they’ll fix, replace or fully refund you for your mattress within the one-year trial period.

Best Budget Firm Mattress

2. Allswell Luxe Extra Firm Hybrid Mattress

What We Like

  • Firm support without plywood feel
  • Hybrid design with coils prevents sagging
  • Copper gel foam actively pulls heat away

What We Don't Like

  • Only a 90-day trial vs. competitors’ full year
  • Thinner profile than luxury hybrids

Allswell

In a PureWow100 review, VP of Editorial Candace Davison described Allswell’s Brick as the kind of mattress that “sounds like it’ll be stiff as, well, a brick,” but instead hits a firmer sweet spot that’s still surprisingly comfortable. Built with a one-inch copper gel memory foam top layer, it’s designed to “keep you from overheating as you sleep,” followed by two inches of high-density foam that provides extra lift. Beneath that, a base of individually wrapped coils absorbs motion so you don’t feel your partner tossing. “You sink into it a bit, but not so much that you feel like the mattress is swallowing you whole,” Davison explains, adding that she feels it falls between five-and-a-half and seven-and-a-half on the firmness scale. (Though the brand ranks it as falling between seven and eight on their official scale.)

At $645 for a queen, it’s not just budget-friendly but surprisingly durable. Davison noted its reinforced edges—something most budget mattresses skimp on—and praised how she woke up “ache-free, ready to roll out of bed.” In her words, it’s supportive without being punishing: “It has enough give that you don’t feel like you’re lying on plywood.” For anyone seeking a firm, cooling hybrid at an entry-level price, The Brick proves you don’t have to sacrifice comfort or construction quality.

Fast Facts

  • Firmness: 7-8 (firm)
  • Return Policy: Allswell mattresses can be returned within 90 days of delivery, either by mail or to a Walmart store if unopened and in original packaging. Walmart covers delivery and return logistics for items sold and shipped directly.

Best Medium-Firm Mattress

3. Saatva Classic Mattress

What We Like

  • Dual-coil system prevents sagging
  • Euro pillow-top mimics luxury hotel beds
  • Reinforced lumbar zone targets back pain

What We Don't Like

  • ‘Luxury firm’ runs softer than the ‘Firm’ option (take firmness quiz)
  •  $99 fee on returns

Saatva

With its luxury firm option, the Saatva Classic is engineered for that elusive balance between plush comfort and solid support. According to Senior Editor Dana Dickey’s PureWow100 review, “the entire layer-cake of its construction is engineered to provide support where your back needs it most—the top is extra-quilted in the lumbar region, and there are additional lumbar supports made of wire and high-density memory foam.” Beneath that, more than 1,300 coils in two different steel densities keep the surface responsive without sagging, so you feel “supported and floating on the mattress, not slurped down into it.”

And while many medium-firm beds skew stiff, Saatva doesn’t sacrifice comfort. A breathable organic cotton cover and plush three-inch Euro pillow-top add hotel-like cushioning, while high-density foam rails give reinforced edge support (no slipping off the side here). As Dickey notes, “I wake up feeling more refreshed, and frankly, I drift off to sleep faster, since I’m not tossing and turning to feel comfortable.” The result? A medium-firm mattress that delivers orthopedic-level support without losing its cloudlike appeal.

Fast Facts

  • Firmness level: 5-7 (medium-firm)
  • Return Policy: Saatva offers a 365-night trial, and for the first 2 years, the retailer will replace your mattress with a new one at no extra charge. Otherwise, if you're not completely happy with your purchase, the company charges a $99 processing fee for return pickups.

Best Firm Mattress for Back Pain

4. Airweave Mattress

What We Like

  • Unique airfiber material excels at relieving chronic back pain
  • Modular blocks with adjustable firmness zones
  • Fully washable, including core

What We Don't Like

  • Initial break-in feels *very* firm
  • Pricier than most

Airweave

What sets the Airweave apart for back pain sufferers is its airfiber core—a material unlike foam or springs that distributes weight evenly and keeps the spine aligned. As Brynn Conway, PureWow’s former senior manager of strategic partnerships, explains in a review: “Honestly, the AirWeave has changed my life. For almost three years, I was convinced my back pain was just part of life. In just three weeks, the AirWeave has eliminated all of that. I sleep through the night (which hasn't been a thing in almost a year) and I wake up actually feeling well-rested.” Inside the mattress are modular blocks of airfiber—including a dual-mode block that can be flipped to adjust between moderate or firm—so you can customize support across your back, shoulders and legs. The result is a surface that relieves pressure on the joints while offering 100 percent spine alignment.

That firmness is distinct, too. “I'm not going to lie, the mattress starts out FIRM and takes two weeks to feel a bit softer,” Brynn notes. But the ‘softness’ here doesn’t mean sagging or impressions: “Now, when I say softer, I don't mean that feeling when your body starts to leave a permanent dent in the bed, but it just seems to conform to your curves a bit and definitely absorbs your weight evenly.” Add in the fact that the entire mattress is machine washable—including the airfiber blocks themselves—and you’ve got a uniquely firm, supportive and refreshingly clean option that actually eliminates back pain rather than causing it.

Fast Facts

  • Firmness level: 8 (firm)
  • Return Policy: Airweave offers a 60-night sleep trial, with a required 14-night minimum adjustment period. If you decide to return your mattress within 60 days, you’ll receive a refund minus a $199 transportation fee and a 15 percent recycling fee.

Best Firm Mattress for Couples

5. Nest Bedding Finch Mattress

What We Like

  • Split-firmness option lets couples choose different feels
  • Latex absorbs motion exceptionally well
  • Good for side and back sleepers

What We Don't Like

  • Slight bounce may not appeal to all
  • Latex construction makes it heavy

Nest Bedding

According to former editor Olivia Dubyak’s PureWow100 review, the Finch is “supportive without being rock-hard,” making it a rare firm mattress that still feels plush on top. “Upon lying on it, you get a plush feel, but you won’t sink into it and have to fight your way out of bed later. The meat of it is actually quite firm and supportive (which was a lovely surprise).” What makes it particularly appealing for couples is the option to customize: “With this model, you can select medium or firm, and if you and your partner prefer different feels, you can even choose an internal split for a half-and-half option.”

She also points out that its build quality and motion isolation make it ideal for sharing. Crafted from layers of OEKO-TEX certified Dunlop latex with a plush pillow top, Dubyak notes, “If you or your partner tosses and turns, you won’t notice because the bed will absorb the movement to keep you still.” She adds that it’s designed to keep your spine neutral and prevent aches, which she and even her pregnant sister noticed: “My sleep quality has drastically improved, and I can honestly say I wake up feeling well rested. My sister (who is very pregnant) stayed with me for a bit and raved over how comfortable my bed was and woke up with no back pains for the first time in a while.”

Fast Facts

  • Firmness Level: 7 (firm)
  • Return Policy: Nest Bedding offers a 365-night trial on adult mattresses, though you’ll need to use it for at least 30 nights before initiating a return. If it’s still not the right fit, you can exchange for a different firmness or return it within the year for a full refund.

Best Firm Mattress for Side-Sleepers

6. Avocado Green Mattress

What We Like

  • Five-zone coil system tailored to body weight
  • Certified organic latex, wool and cotton
  • Optional pillow-top cushions for hips/shoulders

What We Don't Like

  • Firmer base without a pillow-top may feel unyielding
  • Expensive

Avocado Green

In a PureWow100 review, former editor Nicole Briese raves that this mattress is a game-changer for side-sleepers who want firmness without pain. Handcrafted from GOLS-certified organic latex, wool and cotton, it’s built on a medium-firm base with more than 1,400 individually pocketed coils arranged in five ergonomic zones. That combo gives it serious structure without feeling punishing. As Briese puts it: “From the very first night I slept on the mattress, I knew my days of hip agony were over. I put my full weight on my side and waited for the familiar stabbing to come—but none did.” She calls it “supportive, yet cushy,” thanks to the optional pillow top, which compresses just enough under the hips and shoulders to relieve pressure while keeping the spine aligned.

That thoughtful build also translates to stability and motion control. “When I sleep on my side, the pillow top compresses just enough under my hip and shoulder to relieve the pressure, but the coils keep the rest of my body from sinking in too far,” Briese explains. And with the reinforced coil system, she adds, “While I can sense when my boyfriend or cats are moving around, my body doesn’t bounce along with them.” For side-sleepers frustrated by beds that are either too rigid or too saggy, she says the Avocado finally hits the sweet spot: “It’s the first mattress that’s let me sleep comfortably on my side without waking up sore.”

Fast Facts

  • Firmness level: 7 (firm)
  • Return Policy: Avocado offers a 1-year trial where you can return the mattress after a minimum of 30 days. It must be in its original, unaltered state and suitable for donation though (i.e., with tags and without stains, tears, excessive odors or soiling).

Best Firm Cooling Mattress

7. Glacier Original Hybrid Mattress

What We Like

  • Three layers of cooling comfort tech
  • Coil support minimizes motion transfer
  • Great for hot sleepers in humid climates

What We Don't Like

  • Cooling may feel too cold in winter
  • Only 100-night trial vs. year-long competitors

glacier sleep

According to former PureWow Audience Development Strategist Nicole Frazzini’s review, the Glacier Hybrid “is, by far, the best mattress I have ever owned—and the guests who have stayed in my apartment wholeheartedly agree. It’s on the firmer side, which means it supports me (and my many sleep positions) quite well.” That firmness comes from a hybrid build with over 1,000 individually wrapped coils and graphite-infused memory foam, which, as Frazzini explains, helped her finally kick the tossing-and-turning: “No matter how much is on my mind, I have never struggled to get comfortable and fall asleep on this mattress in minutes.”

Yet, where the Glacier sets itself apart is its cooling performance. With glacierTECH fibers, CarbonICE graphite foam and a ventilated ARCFlow gel layer, Frazzini says the materials truly live up to the name: “Although I moved in the dead of winter (which I do not recommend), my building was sweltering thanks to those New York City radiators working at full blast. Of course, I still needed fans going at high speeds, but this mattress definitely shares the credit for helping me fall asleep despite the high temps. Since the situation has stabilized, I’ve even noticed that I no longer need to use a fan as I fall asleep, and I wake up without having kicked off the covers.”

Fast Facts

  • Firmness level: 7-8 (firm)
  • Return Policy: Glacier allows you to try the mattress risk-free for a full year. If it’s not the right fit, return it within 365 days for a full refund, with return shipping covered. Just note: They do not accept returns until your mattress has been used for at least 30 days.

What To Look For In A Firm Mattress

1. Firmness level: The first question you should ask yourself is, *how* firm do I need this mattress to be? According to clinical sleep health expert Terry Cralle, RN: “A firm mattress [has] little or no indentation when you sit or lay on it…Extra firm mattresses will have no indentation, and medium-firm mattresses will show little indentation under body weight.” She also explains how mattress firmness is measured on a scale from one to ten (where level one is the softest, and 10 tends to be hard as a rock). So below, Cralle breaks down three of the firmest levels you can choose from:

  • Medium-firm (levels 6-7): Medium-firm mattresses feature adequate softness at the top to relieve pressure on your body. These are the best option for side sleepers, where they offer ample support for your feet, spine and head.
  • Firm (levels 7-8): Firm mattresses often feature a sturdy coil system coupled with several layers of compressed and upholstery. Such mattresses deliver minimal sinkage, making them the best choice for back sleepers.
  • Extra-firm (levels 9-10): Extra-firm mattresses have a strong foundation that is tailored to absorb weight and motion. They also have remarkable edge support, which means you won’t have to worry about it sagging.

2. Support and sleep type: First and foremost, what do you need most from your mattress? If you suffer from chronic back pain, you’ll want to prioritize a mattress that can offer support. Or, if you’re a side sleeper, you’ll want to look for something that can mold to your body and offer pressure relief. Dr. Frank Siraguso of Revive Chiropractic writes: “One question I hear often is, ‘What is the best mattress for back pain?’ My answer is always the same: You need a medium-firm, hybrid, memory foam or latex mattress.” Indeed, according to a recent study, patients with medium-firm mattresses reported an improvement in chronic low back pain, while extra-firm mattresses proved to be better for spinal alignment. “Back sleepers with aches and pains would benefit from a firm or ultra-firm mattress because of its added support. A side sleeper would benefit from a medium-firm mattress because of its pressure relief,” Dr. Siraguso adds. However, “a hard mattress does not equal a firm mattress. In fact, a hard mattress could increase your back pain by not allowing proper relief from your pressure points. A firm mattress will have an equal amount of both support and pressure relief.”

3. Materials: Speaking of mattress types, make sure you’re clear on which materials will offer you the most comfort. “A medium-firm hybrid mattress made of pocketed coils and several layers of memory foam or latex materials would work great for most conditions, like chronic back pain or a bad back,” says Dr. Siraguso. “Latex mattresses are typically more buoyant than memory foam mattresses. This means that they adjust to your sleep position a little quicker, and are more responsive than traditional memory foam, making latex mattresses best for side sleepers.” He also mentions the cooling benefits of latex, which is a bonus if you’re a sweaty sleeper. “Latex is less dense and usually an open-celled material. This allows for better airflow and cool sleeping,” Dr. Siraguso explains. It’s worth mentioning, however, that latex can get pricey. So, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly alternative, gel memory foam uses phase-changing technology that’s proven to draw heat away from your body and provide a cooler night’s sleep.

4. Trial period and returns: One of the perks of buying a mattress online is that you don’t need to spend a Saturday hopping from bed to bed in-store (with an eager salesperson breathing down your neck). Nowadays, most companies offer a trial period that can span from 30 to 90 days, depending on the brand. Otherwise, most retailers offer a 30-plus-day return period if you’re not feeling the mattress after a few weeks. Just be sure to check that policy applies to your model (AKA: read the fine print). Furthermore, if you’re ordering through Amazon, ensure you’re reading the vendor’s specific return policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a firm mattress better for you?

It depends on your body and sleep style. A firm mattress can keep your spine aligned, minimize sinkage and provide extra support—making it a great option for back sleepers or those with chronic pain. But as experts like Dr. Frank Siraguso caution, “a hard mattress does not equal a firm mattress.” The best firm mattresses balance support and pressure relief, so you don’t wake up sore from pressure points.

What type of mattress is most firm?

Firmness is measured on a scale of one to ten, with one being ultra-soft and ten being rock-hard. Extra-firm mattresses (levels nine to ten) are the most firm, with little to no indentation when you sit or lie down. These typically have a dense foundation and excellent edge support, while firm mattresses (scoring between seven and eight) and medium-firm mattresses (six to seven) blend in more comfort layers for pressure relief.

Who should not sleep on a firm mattress?

Side sleepers usually won’t fare well on very firm or extra-firm mattresses—they need some cushioning at the hips and shoulders to avoid pain. Similarly, anyone with joint issues or who prefers a “sink-in” feel may find a firm mattress too rigid. In these cases, a medium-firm option (six to seven) with a bit more pressure relief is usually the better choice.

Is a firm mattress better for a bad back?

Yes—with a caveat. Clinical studies show that medium-firm mattresses can improve chronic low back pain, while firm or ultra-firm options are best for spinal alignment. Dr. Siraguso explains: “Back sleepers with aches and pains would benefit from a firm or ultra-firm mattress because of its added support. A side sleeper would benefit from a medium-firm mattress because of its pressure relief.” The key is matching firmness to your sleep position and making sure the mattress relieves pressure and supports your spine.
