A sofa’s size and aesthetics are important, but when it comes to buying a couch, there’s one comfort test it must pass: I have to be able to sit criss-cross-applesauce without feeling like I’m going to tip forward. When I saw that the Joybird seat cushions on the Holt Sectional were 28 inches deep, I knew I had to have my butt on that sofa for the foreseeable future.

Shopping for couches online makes it easy to become a skeptic, especially when there are mixed reviews, but if coziness is your main goal, the Joybird Holt Sectional is a fantastic pick. Aside from the comfy cushions (and curl-up-ability, given its spacious seating), it has a minimalist design that adds a luxe, high-quality look to my space. From the white glove delivery to the simple cleaning process, there are plenty of pros to add to your list, but there are a few cons to consider, too. Let’s get right into it, shall we?

My Joybird Holt Sectional Review

I’ve owned quite a few couches over the years, and the Joybird Holt Sectional comes in first place for comfort. The seat cushions are squishy yet firm, while the back cushions keep their shape nicely without feeling too stiff. Wide couch seats are a must for me, and these ones are the perfect depth. I’m about 5 feet 8 inches tall, and when my butt is scooted to the back of the couch cushion, my feet are dangling. That depth makes it super cozy to sleep or relax on. (That said, I do wish the cushions had Velcro on the bottom to attach to the couch more securely. They tend to slide forward a couple of inches if you move around or adjust your positioning while sitting on them.)

The Customer Service & Customization Options Are Impressive

When you order a couch online, customization and customer service are critical to ensure you feel like you’re getting your money’s worth before your couch arrives. At first, I had an issue with shipping because they weren’t able to find a courier to deliver it from the shipping warehouse in my area, which caused a delay in arrival, but after a few days the team was able to sort it out, and it was still delivered within my estimated time frame upon purchasing. Better yet, the delivery team carried the couch right inside my home and placed it where I wanted it, and I didn’t have to lift a finger.

And in terms of customization, Joybird offered a whopping 76 fabric/color options, which you can filter by color, or show only the most sustainable or pet-friendly picks, among other options.  You can also choose whether you want the chaise made for the right or left side of the couch, too.

My couch is the Merit Dove shade, and the fabric is chenille. When you shop, you can sort your search by the brand’s tiers. Each tier has a collection of materials that are organized based on the qualities of the fabric. Tier one has fabrics that are more basic, are available for shipping ASAP and are the most affordable. Tier two materials are more durable and have a wider range of colors. Tier three has more luxurious options like bouclé and velvet, but are better for spills and pets, based on the finish on the fabrics. Tier four fabrics have fewer color options but are the most durable and stain-resistant options available, and they are also pricier.

Within all of the tiers, you’ll find an array of materials to choose from, such as bouclé, velvet, cotton, chenille and polyester blends. Each material is given a cleaning code and, based on the cleaning code of the one you choose, the brand provides instructions on how to clean your couch to avoid damaging the fabric.

It’s Durable but Requires Some Upkeep

Overall, the Holt is incredibly sturdy and, so far, fairly durable. It’s made of solid wood, and the corners are fortified with corner blocking and wood spring rails to prevent warping. I’ve hit the base several times with the vacuum by mistake, and aside from scuff marks, it hasn’t caused any damage or scratches. The chaise is not connected to the two couch seats, so it does push away pretty easily, causing the need to readjust it a bit (but that’s easy enough to do).

Most people have their preferred spot on a couch, and my husband’s and my go-to areas on ours are definitely showing some wear after only six months, which doesn’t bode well for long-term durability. However, I have been swapping the seat cushions every now and then and it seems to be helping even out the surface.

And in terms of further stress-testing the sofa, my todder is a pro. He creates his fair share of messes that result in having to spot clean the fabric from time to time, and I am very pleased with how easily I’ve been able to lift any stains off the material, from pizza sauce to pen marks. The one downside I’ve experienced with the fabric so far is that there is a lot of pilling on the outer edges of the cushions, likely from pants causing friction on them, but I’m able to clean things up with my fabric shaver very easily.

The Bottom Line

What We Like

  • comfortable cushions
  • wide chaise
  • easy-to-clean fabric
  • sleek wood base

What We Don't Like

  • fabric is starting to pill
  • chaise separates easily from the couch seats
  • cushions push forward from the back of the couch
  • cushions are starting to sink in highly used areas

The visual aesthetic and the comfort of this couch are top tier, and I wouldn’t change a thing about those aspects, but the wear from daily use after six months concerns me that it won’t hold up for more than a few years (hopefully I’m wrong). For a couch at this price, I expected a bit more durability there. While the pilling of the material is annoying, it’s not unexpected for chenille, especially on a piece of furniture that’s used so frequently, so being able to shave the affected areas down is a great hack that’s worked well thus far.

Overall, I adore the appearance and the comfort of the Holt sofa and would recommend it based on those features alone. Even though it’s expensive, the brand has tons of fantastic sales to keep an eye out for (like the one going on right now).
