My husband had never met a pillow he’s genuinely liked. That may be an overstatement, but for more than a decade, it rang true. Down is too dense and prickly, memory foam is meh, cotton turns into a pancake too quickly and many down alternatives are suffocating puffballs if you sleep on your stomach in the middle of the night.

But, after hearing how Purple promises to be a different type of pillow—one specially engineered for the Goldilocks among us—we decided to try out its range. And for the first time, my husband raved about a pillow. And months later, he was still raving about it. Flash forward five years, and he's toting that same pillow across the country. He vacations with it!

Here's why it's become the MVP of his sleep routine—so much so that after testing a dozen other pillow brands in the years since he first got it, he's convinced there's none quite like the Purple Harmony pillow. And, no matter how many pillows we put it up against during testing for the Best Sleep Ever Awards, none scored as high in terms of comfort and quality. Now even I'm considering an upgrade.

How We Tested the Purple Harmony Pillow

purple

My husband has slept on this pillow nearly every night for five years. The cover has been washed many times, and it's gotten its fair share of wear and tear on road trips and long-haul flights.

I compared its durability, comfort and overall quality against a variety of types of pillows that I've tested over the years, both as a home editor and Airbnb owner (you replace more pillows than anything else, honestly). How supportive was it? How much has it deflated, if at all, over time? How breathable is it for hot sleepers? Is it just as comfortable for side sleeping as on your back or stomach? And what's the overall value, given its considerable price tag?

The Purple Harmony Pillow, Reviewed

Admittedly, when we initially reviewed the Harmony pillow in 2021, it earned top marks for comfort but didn't score as well as Purple's TwinCloud, all due to price. When we revisited those pillows five years later, I had to say: The higher price tag suddenly made sense. While the Harmony pillow doesn't have a high loft to begin with, it was just as squishy-yet-cradling as the day we unboxed it, whereas the TwinCloud and similar zippered pillows had fallen a bit flat. Or gotten lumpy.

Its durability has flown in the face of general guidelines to replace your pillows every one to three years; this one's in such good shape that it simply doesn't make sense to.

That said, it has gotten pricier over the years, climbing from $159 to $229 for the standard size. Still, I stand by its value—especially since it's made such a huge difference in my husband's sleep. He tends to fall asleep faster, with less tossing and turning to flip to the "cool side" of the pillow or get comfortable at night.

A big part of that is the construction. It has a hypoallergenic latex core that’s wrapped in the same kind of Purple Hex Grid design that made the brand’s mattresses so famous—the grid creates 1,500 air zones, making it incredibly breathable, while evenly cushioning your head. It’s a dream for hot sleepers (no more 3 a.m. sweat puddles!), and its gentle support means it cradles your head and neck, but you don’t feel molded in place—or worse, swallowed up by it. While other pillows started to create an indentation after a few weeks, this one has retained its shape perfectly.

Purple says it went through 50 prototypes to land on a headrest that’s roughly the same weight as your standard pillow, while being supportive and cooling, and it shows. The Harmony is available in three heights (low, medium and tall, depending on your preferred sleeping position) and two sizes* (standard and king), making it customizable to your needs. Oh, and if you don’t like it, you have 30 days to return it, making the splurge a bit easier to justify (especially if it’s on your wedding registry).

*There's also a smaller travel size, but I'll be honest: I have one and don't love it nearly as much. It's the right size to wedge between your head and a window on planes, but I don't find it nearly as comfortable. When scaled down, the Harmony seems much firmer, to the point that I took the Hex Grid layer off just to make it soft enough to rest my head on. It's worth paying more for a standard-size pillow.

As much as I initially rolled my eyes at Purple's bold claim that the Harmony is "The Greatest Pillow Ever Invented®," I now see the light. It provides a sense of weightlessness, comfort and overall breathability that I haven't experienced with other pillows. And I certainly haven't experienced one as durable.
