When your bedroom is a converted 78-year-old attic, you gain a whole new understanding of how much heat rises. Even after spending more than a mortgage payment to insulate my house, come summertime, my bedroom is an unintentional sauna. Until the glory that is the Shark TurboBlade entered my life.

I’ve owned many an oscillating fan, but nothing like this. With a tilting, telescoping head—that you can adjust to hit right at bed height, preventing night sweats (!!)—up to 180-degree oscillation and a Beyoncé-wind-fan-caliber “BreezeBoost” mode, it’s the cooling relief I’ve dreamed of.

What Is the Shark TurboBlade Fan?

shark

This isn’t your typical tower fan, and not because it looks like it could be a background robot in Electric State. It’s like the Swiss Army Knife of fans; it’s just that versatile. The bladeless fan can oscillate 180 degrees, sending a breeze up to 80 feet outward, with 10 speeds (and 10 noise levels). Better yet, the fan’s blast can be split in two directions, if you want a steady stream of air without making it oscillate back and forth. (This makes it ideal for tucking into a corner while ensuring air circulates throughout the room.)

The Shark TurboBlade Fan, Reviewed

Of course, just because a brand claims its fan can do all these things doesn’t mean it can do them well. Would it be bulky? Blast air unevenly? Be so outrageously loud I can’t sleep (or think) with it around? Or so quiet that I kind of crave that white noise as I attempt to drift off? I had questions—and I was surprised to see Shark delivered on all fronts (and then some).

The Setup Is Intuitive

shark

Bless whoever at Shark decided to ditch wordy instruction manuals in favor of a photo-driven, three-step Quick Start Guide, with a breakout section highlighting the fan’s features and ways to customize it to your liking. As if that weren’t foolproof enough, you could actually ditch the guide and set it up just following the A, B and C stickers and little prompts on the fan itself—all of which removed easily once assembled, leaving zero residue.

A note to your mom who leaves the screen protector on her phone weeks after it’s unboxed: You’ll need to remove the tape (yes, all of it) after it’s assembled. I forgot a piece on the base, and it kept the fan from oscillating at first.

The Wind Speeds Are Powerful—Really Powerful

shark

LED lights help show what fan speed you’re at, but trust me, you’ll know. At a 10, you’re ready to film that Beyoncé-inspired TikTok from across the room; that’s how strong the breeze is. It’s about as noisy as a hair dryer at that point, but still quiet enough that I could watch a show without turning on subtitles. (In a smaller space, it may be too much.)

In Sleep mode, the chimes are muted, the lights are dimmed and it oscillates at a whisper-quiet volume, with just enough wind to provide a gentle breeze—not blow your hair back.

If the latter is what you’re after, pushing the BreezeBoost button will achieve just that. It’s a must-try after a long run or if you’ve been working outside and need relief ASAP.

My favorite setting, however, is Natural Breeze mode. It “gently randomizes airflow,” per the brand, and creates a feeling like you’re lounging in a hammock on a breezy day, even if you’re really sitting on a folding chair in your attic-bedroom, furiously typing away at a keyboard (just me?).

It’s a Bedtime MVP

Sleep mode is a one-and-done solution. To truly create a blissful bedtime experience, I recommend pivoting the fan horizontally, then telescoping it so it blasts air just a few inches above your bed. This creates a blanket of airflow that is delightfully soothing, helping me drift off easily, even on balmy nights.

The Remote Magnetically Sticks to the Fan

For anyone who’s constantly losing their remote, let’s hear it for a remote. That. Magnetically. Clips. Onto. The fan! Cue the slow clap and single tear from the corner of your eye.

The One Thing to Note

At a little over 14 pounds, this fan is about as sleek as it can be—but still a little bulky. That can make it a little harder to move around, but honestly, the bulk is necessary, both to house the powerful fan itself and ensure that it doesn’t tip over and break easily. It’s a very sturdy, solid build.

The Bottom Line: Is It Worth It?

What We Like

  • Can set a timer (1-12 hours)
  • 10 speeds
  • Sleep mode is quiet & calming
  • Easily adjustable/customizable
  • Powerful

What We Don't Like

  • pricey
  • Somewhat bulky

shark

At $300, this fan isn’t cheap—but the results are top-tier, and far more customizable and portable than any fan I’ve ever tested. If you have a warm room or a wimpy A/C unit, this is just the boost you needed. The Sleep mode is truly impressive for hot sleepers, too, making it well worth the expense in my book.
