Joanna Gaines may be the ultimate businesswoman, but she is a mama first and foremost.

On Monday, August 11, the entrepreneur shared a sweet message dedicated to her children with the caption, “They told me it would go by quicker than I think. That the days are slow but the years are fast. And darn it if they were right. This beautiful gift of time has roared past us all just like I was told. My oldest son left for his third year of college while my oldest daughter packs for her first year across the country.”

She continued, “This season already feels like one big, breathless surrender. Lord, how do I hold them close while also letting go? Help me to embrace change with a heart filled with hope for the part I know to be truer than the rest—my kids and I may have been made for each other, but I also believe they were made for more. More experiences, more knowledge, more growing than could ever happen within our walls. To all the parents packing up and moving kids to new places, and to all those with years still to spare: hold them close, hold them well, and let’s all lean on each other when the time comes to hold it together.”

The message struck an emotional chord with many of Gaines’s fans, who echoed similar sentiments. “As a Mom who desperately loves when girls come home, I read something that really resonated......as your children become older and grow into adults with their own lives and responsibilities, ‘your home that has always been their anchor, becomes their lighthouse.’ And that stayed with me,” wrote one fan. “So much grief and joy all wrapped into one. It’s kinda like getting to the end of a really, really, really good book, and knowing you can’t ever read it for the first time again, but so deeply thankful you had every chapter and cannot wait for the sequel,” added another.

Gosh…I can’t be the only one crying right now. Needless to say, family has always been important to Gaines, who recently graced the cover of Delish’s 2025 Fall Treats Baking Issue. In the magazine, she chatted a bit about how food has been the connector to her personal relationships, noting that it has always been her love language, and that cooking with her grandad still inspires her today.

“The first time I ever baked was with my granddad in his kitchen in Wichita, Kansas,” Gaines said. “He had me over, taught me how to make a Syrian donut recipe—and something about that moment clicked. I think about my fondest memories,” she told the publication. “It’s always what my mom made me, the time in the kitchen with my dad, the memories around the table….It’s everyone gathering at the island as I’m finishing up dinner. It’s not around anything other than food.”

Food is also what brings her and her husband, Chip Gaines, closer. “It’s that thing that brings us together just for the two of us. We love date night. We go to lunch a ton. Chip is a sharer. I’ll say, ‘I’m going to get this.’ He’s like, ‘I’ll just split it with you.’ But I’m like, ‘Get your own! You can have some, but I’m not splitting it.’”

Because whether it’s baking chocolate chip cookies or sending your firstborn off to college, Joanna knows the sweetest moments are meant to be savored.
