King Charles shared an emotional message with fellow cancer patients at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, where the royal spoke of how his own cancer diagnosis has been “an experience that brings into sharp focus the very best of humanity.”

The King was hosting a reception at the palace for cancer charities to “celebrate and above all thank those who so selflessly give care, comfort and reassurance to the 390,000 people who, sadly, receive a new cancer diagnosis across the UK each year,” the BBC reports.

The royal was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer back in February 2024 and was briefly hospitalized last month due to side effects from his ongoing treatment.

Queen Camilla joined him for the event where Charles shared how his illness “has certainly given me an even deeper appreciation of the extraordinary work undertaken by the remarkable organizations and individuals gathered here this evening, many of whom I have known, visited and supported over the years.”

He added: “And it has reinforced what I have long observed during these visits—that the darkest moments of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion.”

King Charles and Queen Camilla are both patrons of cancer organizations, including Macmillan Cancer Support, Breast Cancer Now, Maggie's and Children's Hospice South West; representatives from all patronages were at the evening event.

The royal ended his speech on a hopeful note, telling guests: “And to those who may be receiving such upsetting news today, tomorrow or at any point in the future, I can only echo the departing words of the late Dame Deborah James, whose parents I am delighted to have with us here this evening, and whose example stands as an inspiration to us all, in sickness and in health: 'Find a life worth enjoying; take risks; love deeply; have no regrets; and always, always have rebellious hope.'”

Here's hoping that His Majesty is able to share a positive update about his health soon.
