I'm something of a jumpsuit obsessive. As someone who is rather lazy in the fashion department, I love any garment that functions as an entire outfit without styling. My jumpsuit collection never fails to garner compliments, and they rise to any occasion: cute work outfit, cocktail hour, even the pile of wedding invitations slowly growing on my desk.

If you, too, just got invited to a black-tie wedding and want to buck tradition, eschewing the evening gown, well, I've got recs for you. You’d be surprised at all the options—from lace and floral appliqué to capes and trains, there are a plethora of formal jumpsuits that are just right for wedding season.

A few of my favorites? Boden's Palazzo Jumpsuit ($270) with fabric so fluid it's nearly a skirt; Yumi's Floral Jumpsuit ($179) with its elegant floral appliqué and a cape jumpsuit from Amazon ($54) that feels right on trend. (I'll also discuss formal jumpsuit do’s and don’ts with fashion stylists and wedding experts, so you can feel dressed to the nines, whether it's your big day or someone else's.)

  • long pant legs allow flexibility for taller people to wear the designs
  • functional pockets
  • fabric doesn’t wrinkle
  • flowy fabric

What We Don’t Like:

Boden

I'm a longtime fan of Boden, a brand that reliably churns out stylish, timeless, fun pieces season after season. I live in their linen during the summer and pull out a sunset orange jumpsuit for special occasions. Looks like I'm going to have to put this palazzo jumpsuit in my cart next—from the billowing sleeves to the smart lapel, self-tying belt and dramatic legs, it's a great option that fits everything from a garden party to cocktail dresscode. Be forewarned, most of the mixed reviews come from the excess fabric of the trousers. In my experience as a non-petite, 5'6'' person, I have always had to take Boden's pants to the tailor. Prepare to do the same.

JS Collections

This wide-leg crepe jumpsuit has a sleek mesh neckline accented with an abstract bow, creating a prim and formal look. The material is stretchy, meaning you can get down on the dance floor, and the jumpsuit is lined. Do note that the brand runs large, and it’s advised to size down.

Peplum Power

3. lulus Power of Love Jumpsuit

What We Like:

  • inventive take on peplum
  • wide-leg silhouette

What We Don’t Like:

  • limited sizing

lulus

If the current trends have anything to say right now, it's that peplum is so back. Just look at basically the entire Dior FW26 collection. I'm loving lulus' unconventional take on the silhouette, with a strapless V-neck and peplum that falls at an empire-waist length for a splashy twist. A high, fitted waist flows into relaxed, wide leg pants.

Other features I love: It’s stretchy (bring on that second piece of wedding cake) and it has no-slip strips so you can get down on the dance floor. It’s available in four colors: red, white, navy and black.

En Saison

One of the most valuable style lessons I've learned as a fashion writer? The CST rule. As long as your outfit is interesting via Color, Texture and/or Shape, you're good to go. This formal jumpsuit wins in the texture department, which instantly elevates the classic navy color. I'm partial to the huge self-tying bow and the functioning side pockets—because the last thing I want to take to a wedding is a handbag.

Lacey Fun

6. Adrianna Papell Lace & Crepe Jumpsuit

What We Like

  • off-the shoulder top
  • bell sleeves
  • lace texture

What We Don't Like

  • per buyers, trousers may need to be hemmed

Adrianna Papell

I love a good lacy number with bell sleeves, and this flattering off-the-shoulder design by Adrianna Papell fits the bill. A hint of elastane gives the fabric a comfortable stretch, while the crepe, pattern and wide leg trousers keep things flattering.

Flower Power

7. Yumi Floral Jumpsuit

What We Like

  • 3D floral appliqué
  • sheer sleeves
  • functional pockets

What We Don't Like

  • limited sizing

Yumi

I love a good floral, but it doesn't always need to be a print. Some of my favorite ways to add texture to an outfit is with appliqué, which gives the subject a 3D appearance. This formal jumpsuit by Yumi makes it feel like I'm wearing a garden of flowers. Plus, the sheer sleeves feel a tad daring while providing some coverage.

DGHBVS

It seems like capes are everywhere right now, thanks, in part, to the surge of interest in operacore fashion. This jumpsuit features a cropped cape that drapes flatteringly over the torso, complementing the flowing, nearly palazzo-like pants that exude elegance and ease. There are seven colors to choose from, including emerald green, magenta and black.

  • flowy, comfortable design

What We Don't Like

  • per buyers, trousers likely need hemming

Adrianna Papell

When it comes to formal jumpsuits for wedding season—and any occasion, really—it's hard to go wrong with black and white. The classic color combo is always elegant and elevated. I love this style because it feels surprising; the shock of white draws the eye into the deep V-cut created by the black skirt. Modest? Yes. Unexpected and visually interesting? Also yes.

The Disco Number

10. VERWIN Patchwork Jumpsuit

What We Like

  • large color selection

What We Don't Like

  • limited sizing

Verwin

One look at this jumpsuit and my brain screamed "DISCO!" Disco in a non-cheesy, I'm at Studio 54 in the '70s kind of way. The glitter adds such a fun texture to an otherwise boring color, and the half-skirt adds movement when you walk (and dance). It's fancy, fun and something you can actually dance in.

The Comfy Cocktail Number

11. Mixed by Nasrin Quincy Jumpsuit

What We Like

  • large color selection
  • machine washable
  • big pockets

What We Don't Like

  • per buyers, may not accommodate long torsos

Mixed by Nasrin

Mixed by Nasrin is one of my favorite independent NYC-based designers, who first gained popularity for her jumpsuits. Last year I bought the Quincy in brown corduroy, but the style also comes in vibrant jewel tones I think would be perfect for a fall/winter cocktail event. Think ruby red, emerald green and deep navy just this side of sapphire. The pockets are deep, the fabric slightly stretchy and machine washable. Wearing it with heels is an instantly classic outfit, while sneakers make it casual everyday wear.

What to Consider When Shopping for a Formal Jumpsuit

When shopping for a formal jumpsuit, there are several things to keep in mind. First is the material. If you plan on tearing up the dance floor, a stretchy piece may be more comfortable than a jumpsuit that’s more fitted and structured. You’ll also want something secure, so if you’re going strapless, make sure there’s some grippy lining that will hold it up while you scream Taylor Swift lyrics under the disco lights.

Another thing to consider is the season. You’ll either want to invest in a nice coat or choose a long-sleeve jumpsuit. (Better yet, do both.) And because it’s formal wear, keep in mind that you may need to bring it to the tailor for adjustments. Just be sure to give yourself enough time leading up to the event to have the alterations made. Nothing’s worse than wondering if you’ll get your clothing back in time before the event.

Lastly, be considerate. If you’re entertaining a piece that feels extremely loud or may not fit the color palette of the wedding, run it by the bride before you buy it. That way, you don’t have to worry about upstaging anyone.

Can a Jumpsuit Be Formal?

Absolutely. Jewelry and shoes can really polish the look, Ha says. Try statement earrings (bold or elegant) or embellished heels to bring the outfit to life. When it comes to the heels, Terranova advises choosing one with a tapered toe or going for a strappy sandal in warm weather.

Schuppler recommends styling the jumpsuit with faux fur, whether it’s a jacket or stole, and let it hang over your shoulders. “Add a structured embellished evening clutch or small handbag and finish your look with a metallic pump or strappy heel in silver or gold,” she advises. Terranova echoes the recommendation, adding that if the bag pulls in a coordinating detail from your jewelry or shoes, it will make the outfit pop.

“It’s ok to have fun with color and details like sparkles or bows,” she notes about accessories. “For a higher necklines you want to go with a bold earring, and pair an open neckline with a statement necklace or a necklace/earring set. Feel free to add a wrap or a beautiful jacket draped over your shoulders if needed for warmth.”

Is It OK to Wear a Jumpsuit to a Wedding?

Yes, it is OK to wear a jumpsuit to a wedding. Schuppler has observed that this outfit choice has gained popularity over the years. "This season, jumpsuits of all colors and styles are filling the stores and most of them are meant strictly for formal occasions,” she notes.

Terranova says that it’s important to keep in mind the formality, fabrication and fit. “For a formal wedding be sure to look for a quality fabric, a wider pant leg and details like a tailored tuxedo lapel or satin trim,” she advises. “Once you have your shoes, it is important to have the length of the pants tailored appropriately so that the fabric does not gather and drag at your feet, which can look messy.”

Can I Wear a Jumpsuit to a Black-Tie Wedding?

“As we’re all aware, wedding fashion norms and traditions have completely changed in recent years, embracing new styles for both brides and their guests,” Keane says. “Jumpsuits are a great way to allow wedding guests to make a bold statement while still looking as chic as any other guest. Whether you prefer for a well-tailored tuxedo jumpsuit with a contrasting silk lapel and power shoulder or opt for a jumpsuit with an elegant cape and deep V-neckline; the versatility of a jumpsuit can give you the added drama that’s often missing in a simple gown.”

Schuppler tells PureWow that black is the safest option, but you can also go for jewel tones, like sapphire, ruby and emerald. Also consider the fabric. Ha says that higher-quality materials like silk, satin and crepe are all great picks for formal occasions. Above all, good tailoring is key.

“Steer clear of busy prints and overly casual materials such as stretch jersey or lightweight cotton prone to creasing,” Keane advises. “Opt for fabrics such as silk chiffon for a summer wedding or silk velvet for winter and incorporate details such as bows, rhinestone trims and beautiful draping to ensure your jumpsuit is wedding-appropriate.”
