Like my parents, my husband and I are an Aries-Libra couple. I’ve always chalked it up to a fun coincidence rather than cosmic destiny. After all, horoscopes can be vague enough to read however you want. But recently, I found myself wondering: how much weight do our signs really carry when it comes to lasting love? To find out, I turned to something a little sturdier than starry speculation—numbers. I asked our readers three simple questions: What’s your sign? What’s your spouse’s? And how long have you been married? More than 1,200 couples responded, and when the data was tallied, one zodiac duo clearly rose above the rest.

Would astrologers agree?

The Power Match: Cancer & Capricorn
In total, Cancer–Capricorn appeared in 28 marriages—well above the dataset’s average of about 16 couples per pairing. And even when we filtered out newer relationships to look only at marriages lasting five years or more, they still held strong with 22 couples, keeping them at the very top (as shown in the bar graph above).
Other pairings, as you'll see, are also clear winners. (Aries–Libra was a strong match for newlyweds; Leo–Pisces holds up for the long-haul.) But Cancer–Capricorn consistently show up across every stage of marriage, thanks to a frequency and steadiness that's pre-written in the stars.
For astrology buffs, you might be thinking, hmm, interesting. This isn’t a stereotypical zodiac duo. But, as we’ve written about on PureWow before, the match has been deemed compatible: “If relationships are work, Capricorns are here to do the work, and that usually makes for a very stable bond. One thing these two have in common is they keep their personal business private and present a strong, united front. Together, these over-achievers are the power couple of everyone’s dreams,” wrote astrologer Kiki O’Keeffe.

In fact, Prince William and Kate Middleton are living proof. He’s a Cancer, she’s a Capricorn, and their marriage has long been framed as a modern royal fairytale: polished, disciplined, but grounded in family and tradition. It’s the perfect example of how this pairing balances tenderness with grit—Cancer offering emotional intelligence, Capricorn bringing structure. And while it might not be the flashiest duo in the zodiac, the data (and the royals) show it might just be one of the most enduring.

The Least Common: Double Signs
Although all 78 combinations of zodiac pairs were repped, the least common pairings in our poll were double sign matches—that is, Aries with Aries, Leo with Leo, Capricorn with Capricorn, Sagittarius with Sagittarius, and, least of all, Aquarius with Aquarius.
When we looked at 5-, 10-, and 20-year categories, double sign duos had the thinnest bars across the board. Sharing a sign can mean instant recognition, but it can also double the challenges—two Aries may lock horns, two Capricorns can get stuck in practicality, and two Aquarians might drift off in the clouds. In other words: the numbers back up the astrology cliché. Lasting balance often comes from complementary differences, not mirror images. Just ask Will and Kate.
