Make no mistake: ‘Tis the season of all things pumpkin and apple—you’ll find plenty of both at chains and in grocery stores this season—but this fall also marks the rise of one overarching theme. Earlier this year, I predicted the rise of “haute homemade,” the desire to enjoy elevated meals at home, even if you didn’t have all evening to babysit a risotto or the culinary skills to spatchcock a chicken (which is easier than it seems, I promise!).
This season, however, that concept has appeared in full force, and it’s extending to drive thrus and chain restaurants as well, with dine-in-worthy takeout usurping the gimmicky, dare-you-to-try-it meals that took over menus the past few years (ahem, pickle dirty sodas and everything bagel ice cream). Here’s what’s worth trying this September and October, straight from someone who’s made snacking her full-time job.
